British School at Rome

In "Western Ways", for the first time, the "foreign schools" in Rome and Athens, institutions dealing primarily with classical archaeology and art history, are discussed in historical terms as vehicles and figureheads of national scholarship. By emphasising the agency and role of individuals in relation to structures and tradition, the book shows how much may be gained by examining science and politics as two sides of the same coin. It sheds light on the scholarly organisation of foreign schools, and through them, on the organisation of classical archaeology and classical studies around the Mediterranean. With its breadth and depth of archival resources, "Western Ways" offers new perspectives on funding, national prestige and international collaboration in the world of scholarship, and places the foreign schools in a framework of nineteenth and twentieth century Italian and Greek history.

La Villa Wolkonsky, oggi residenza dell’Ambasciatore Britannico a Roma, custodisce nel suo giardino una ricca collezione di marmi di età romana, patrimonio storico e artistico di valore.
Grazie a recenti restauri è stato possibile documentare per la prima volta in modo completo l’intera raccolta di antichità e indagarne la storia, dalla formazione fino all’esposizione odierna.
In questo volume si sono ripercorse le vicende stesse della Villa e dei suoi proprietari, in particolare i principi Wolkonsky, grandi amanti della cultura e figure centrali per la nascita e l’incremento della collezione a partire dai primi decenni dell’Ottocento. Attraverso lo studio di documentazione storica e di archivio è stato ricostruito ogni momento riguardante la raccolta e i marmi antichi, dalle provenienze archeologiche e collezionistiche all’esposizione nel giardino romantico. La Villa fu luogo di incontro per scrittori, artisti e visitatori, di cui si sono riportati gli ammirati commenti e le descrizioni, ma fu anche al centro dei ferventi lavori dell’urbanizzazione postunitaria, durante i quali avvennero numerose scoperte archeologiche che portarono al rinvenimento di reperti, in parte confluiti nella collezione stessa.
Sede diplomatica prima tedesca, poi inglese, Villa Wolkonsky divenne luogo di rappresentanza, dove la collezione continuava ad essere motivo di pregio.
Uno sguardo generale sui singoli reperti della raccolta completa il percorso, indagando i marmi da un punto di vista archeologico, storico e artistico, così come del gusto antiquario.

In the early twentieth century, Thomas Ashby published extensively on the Roman roads of Italy. The BSR Director was determined to create a lasting record of the ancient Roman road network before it was lost forever. Yet Ashby’s research vision was grand and it was too ambitious a task for one man to accomplish on his own. This paper investigates the crucial role of BSR scholars in Ashby’s research. It discusses his relationship with the community of residents and scholars at the BSR in the pre and post WWI years, especially those whom he collaborated with in order to survey, map and record the Roman roads and their surrounding countryside. Focus is given to Ashby’s research on roads like the Via Flaminia and Via Appia as this work highlights his methodology, the collegial environment at the BSR during his directorship, and his successful collaboration with award-holders. To date, the role of these BSR scholars has largely been underrated. Yet there were BSR award-holders—historians, archaeologists and architects—who helped to keep Ashby’s research vision alive. Without them, he could not have produced such a comprehensive and impressive body of work on Italy’s Roman roads.
