Baroque Ceiling Painting

Osservando la quadratura sulla volta della chiesa di San Matteo (affrescata tra 1717 e 1719 da Giuseppe e Francesco Melani) si notano alcune difformità. Né i basamenti né le cornici degli ordini disegnati seguono del tutto l’andamento di quei reali, ma a volte sembrano “salire” o “scendere” rispetto alle cornici della chiesa. Le cornici che reggono le balconate in aggetto, come le loro balaustre, assumono una forma molto insolita. Queste due curve, quando osservate dal punto di vista privilegiato, non si percepiscono né come circolari né come ovali, e in più, non sono nemmeno parallele tra di loro. Le rette verticali (perpendicolari al quadro) sembrano curvare in alcuni punti.
Il presente studio si pone di esaminare alcuni punti “incongrui” di questa quadratura sulla base di un rilievo integrato (scansione laser e fotogrammetria), concentrandosi su due principali passaggi creativi:
1. Come si fa a “progettare” il bozzetto piano per uno spazio così irregolare? L’architettura pensata per la volta segue veramente la geometria irregolare della chiesa (trapezio scaleno), oppure usa vari accorgimenti per adattare un modello a pianta rettangolare sulla base esistente?
2. In che maniera avviene il trasferimento del bozzetto piano sulla superfice complessa della volta?
In quanto riguarda la progettazione del bozzetto, l’altezza ricostruita dell’architettura dipinta sembra fornirci il primo indizio. Essa è pari alla distanza che sta tra il punto di vista e l’imposta della volta. Questa particolare altezza si rileva come molto “comoda” dal punto di vista operativo in un metodo (per fare bozzetti) descritto dal geografo veneziano Cristoforo Sorte. Tale metodo comporta l’uso di un modello in scala, di ciò che si vuole dipingere, ed uno specchio piano posto alla base del modello. Se l’occhio è posto all’altezza del modello nella fase di disegno l’altezza del architettura dipinta sarà la stessa nella ricostruzione (ovviamente in scala). Un’altezza maggiore invece obbligherebbe l’occhio ad entrare dentro il modello (posizione scomoda).
Il secondo passaggio, cioè il trasferimento dal bozzetto piano sulla superficie voltata, in linea di principio, potrebbe avvenire in due modi:
-Il primo sarebbe una specie di proiezione del bozzetto piano posto all’imposta della volta sulla superficie curva dal punto di vista, come suggerito da Andrea Pozzo. Questo metodo (se fatto dal vero e non sul modello in scala), non creerebbe le difformità del disegno dovute alla geometria irregolare della volta. Osservate dal punto di vista tutte le difformità svanirebbero.
-L’altro metodo possibile potrebbe essere quello di costruire un corrispondente modello in scala della volta, proiettare sul esso la griglia del bozzetto e riportarne lo sviluppo delle linee meccanicamente su fogli di carta. Una volta ingrandita la griglia, si prosegue con il disegno di altri elementi principali dell’architettura da dipingere, direttamente sui cartoni ingranditi.  In questo caso, le difformità della volta reale, che forse non sono state rilevate e riprodotte nel fare il modellino, risalterebbero fuori e sarebbero evidenti quando osservate dal punto di vista.
Nel caso di San Matteo, si rilevano alcuni segni che diventano improvvisamente “regolari” nella proiezione sviluppata. Questa operazione farebbe riferimento ad una cultura molto attenente alla cartografia e ai problemi legati alle superfici non sviluppabili, alla quale non interessa più soltanto l’inganno ma vuole mettere altre pratiche in atto.

In 2006 Cy Twombly was chosen to decorate the ceiling of the Louvre’s Salle des Bronzes. The latest ceiling commission at the museum dated back to 1953, when Georges Braque executed Oiseaux for the ceiling of Salle Henri II. Completed in 2010, Ceiling (le Plafond) departs from the artist’s signature trembling line while retaining other characteristics of his pictorial language. Twombly treated the ceiling as an easel painting of monumental dimensions: a surface he filled with an almost monochromatic blue field, evoking the sky and recalling Giotto’s Arena Chapel vault. Simple, geometric motifs trace the ceiling’s contours, while inscriptions naming seven sculptors from ancient Greece invite the visitor for a walk around the gallery. This paper shows how Twombly articipated in the long tradition of ceiling painting by building a strong connection between the space, content, and context of the room: a site in which the viewer plays a decisive role. With a rare example of monumental 21st century painting, sited where one might not expect to encounter abstraction, Twombly made his entrance into the Louvre’s pantheon of great artists, gaining, as one critic put it, «33 meters of immortality».

Nel 2006 Cy Twombly fu invitato a decorare il soffitto della Salle des Bronzes del Louvre. L’ultima commissione di questo tipo al museo risaliva al 1953, quando Georges Braque dipinse i suoi Oiseaux per il soffitto della Salle Henri II. Completato nel 2010, Ceiling (le Plafond) si allontana dalla linea ‘tremolante’ dell’artista pur mantenendo altre caratteristiche del suo linguaggio pittorico. Twombly ha trattato il soffitto come un dipinto da cavalletto di dimensioni monumentali: una superficie che ha riempito con un campo blu quasi monocromatico, che evoca il cielo e richiama la volta della Cappella degli Scrovegni di Giotto. Semplici motivi geometrici definiscono i contorni del soffitto, mentre i nomi di sette scultori dell’antica Grecia invitano il visitatore a una passeggiata nella galleria. Questo articolo mostra come Twombly
partecipi della lunga tradizione della pittura decorativa costruendo una forte relazione tra lo spazio, il contenuto e il contesto della stanza: un luogo in cui lo spettatore gioca un ruolo decisivo. Con un raro esempio di pittura monumentale del XXI secolo, realizzato laddove non ci si potrebbe aspettare di incontrare l’astrazione, Twombly hafatto il proprio ingresso nel pantheon dei grandi artisti del Louvre, guadagnando così, come disse un critico, «33 metri di immortalità».

The Patronʼs Historized Image. Attemsʼ Family Portraits and Rempʼs Self-Portrait in the Brežice (Rann) Castle

The paper analyzes the family portraits of Ignaz Maria, Count of Attems (Ljubljana/Ger. Laibach, 15 August 1652–Graz, 13 December 1732), with his sons, and Maria Regina, Countess of Wurmbrand with her daughter and sons, painted in oil technique for the Great Hall in the Brežice Castle (Ger. Rann). The portraits have been kept at Schloss Eggenberg of the Landesmuseum Joanneum since 2010. They were painted by Franz Carl Remp (Radovljica/Ger. Radmannsdorf, 14 October 1674–Vienna, 23 September 1718), who depicted himself in fresco technique in full figure in a representative place in the center of the hall as the only person from the present. In the portrait, Ignaz Maria, who, according to archival sources, participated as an architect in the construction and rebuilding of his residences, is presented as an architect-creator and an architect-founder of the new Styrian family. A careful arrangement of historized portraits, with which the proud parents wanted to preserve for eternity the image of an artistically generous and ambitious family that prospers in peace and love, in connection to the painter’s self-portrait, is exceptional. Even though numerous possible sources for the paintings can be named, they served only as an inspiration for a unique work of art.

The article presents painting compositions on the vault in the central nave of the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Franciscan Conventuals). The study aimed to reconstruct and analyse the structure and iconography of the painting and reveal the conceptual program of all figurative compositions of the vault. The cycle of paintings on the vault in the central nave of the Franciscan church in Vilnius is an exceptional reflection of the devotion to St. Anthony of Padua in the late Baroque art of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The cycle has no analogues in Lithuania, and the closest example is the wall painting in the Bernardine church in Warsaw.
The study analyses 22 scenes that are currently more or less visible; five of which are in central frescoes and 17 in the accompanying lunettes. In addition, the cycle is supplemented by ten emblem compositions whose extremely poor condition does not allow to understand the depicted motifs and symbols. At present, it is almost impossible to decipher their inscriptions or fragments, which would allow to understanding the meaning and language of the emblems. Therefore, the study does not analyse the emblematic compositions.
Vault frescoes form a continues iconographic program depicting the most famous miracles and essential moments of the life of St. Anthony of Padua. Antanas Karenga, the guardian of the monastery, is hypothetically considered the creator of the iconographic program. The cycle of frescoes on the vault of the central nave in the Franciscan Church in Vilnius consists of these scenes: 1) Ferdinand’s calling to join the monastery; 2) St. Anthony of Padua joins a Franciscan monastery (receiving the Franciscan habit or clothing); 3) Humble work of St. Anthony of Padua in the kitchen of the monastery; 4) St. Anthony of Padua response to the Dominican sermon; 5) The appearance of St. Francis of Assisi during the sermon of St. Anthony at the Arle Chapter (or the bilocation of St. Anthony of Padua in Montpellier or Limoges); (6) Ship’s rescue from the storm; 7) Miracle with a talking baby; 8) Miracle in Lisbon (Resurrection of the murdered to testify the innocence of St. Anthony’s father); 9) The re-attached foot; 11) St. Anthony of Padua has dinner with heretics (or „miracle of unbroken glass“); 12) St. Anthony of Padua sermon to the fishes; 13) The vision of St. Anthony of Padua (the apparition of the Holy Child to St. Anthony of Padua); 15) The angel messenger; 17) Sermon to the people; 18) Hair regrowth for a woman; 19) The salvation of the calling; 20) Miracle of the mule (miracle with the Blessed Sacrament); 21) Satan disturbs the preaching of St. Anthony. Due to the lack of prototypes and fragmentary visible images, scenes in frescoes No. 14, 16 and 22 remain unidentified. The ongoing restoration of the frescoes may in the future revise the names of the scenes, uncovering all details of the images that would allow specifying and identifying the unknown scenes. The restoration of the emblematic compositions would allow a more in-depth and precise understanding of this iconographic program.
The iconography of the vault is directly related to the miraculous image of St. Anthony of Padua and upheld devotion to Saint Franciscan. Selected plots of frescoes have originated from several sources written by the Saint’s contemporaries and later authors who documented the popular legends. The plot on the vault emphasizes the influence of the sermons of St. Anthony of Padua, his struggle against heresies and the dogma of the Incarnation. The particular importance was given to the Sacrament of Penance.

Tra il 1582 e il 1587 il cantiere della chiesa gesuita di San Rocco a Lisbona divenne un centro di sperimentazione d’avanguardia della pittura di architetture in prospettiva. L’articolo propone una nuova datazione dell’opera, circostanziandola agli anni 1586 e 1588. Ciò permette di contestualizzarla nell’ambito delle strategie di affermazione del potere di Filippo II di Spagna, divenuto re di Portogallo nel 1580 con il nome di Filippo I. In questa occasione i gesuiti lusitani giocarono un ruolo fondamentale insieme all’aristocratico e diplomatico luso-spagnolo Juan de Borja che, nel 1587, donò alla Casa inaziana il suo prezioso tesoro di reliquie. La pittura del soffitto venne realizzata in sintonia con questo evento dal pittore portoghese Francisco Venegas, co-adiuvato probabilmente da Amaro do Vale. La carica innovativa di quest’opera può essere meglio intesa se messa in relazione con la pubblicazione in Italia del trattato di Vignola-Danti Le due regole della prospettiva pratica (1583), con la presenza nel cantiere dell’architetto di origine bolognese Filippo Terzi come sovrintendente dei lavori di San Rocco e con la predilezione, specificamente portoghese, verso l’architettura costruita o dipinta. L’uso della prospettiva è fulcrale per la riuscita dell’opera e l’incontro tra Terzi e Venegas permise l’elaborazione di una pittura d’avanguardia, unica nel panorama europeo dell’epoca e comparabile solo con le sperimentazioni contemporanee in atto nei territori italiani.

Příspěvek se zabývá motivem personifikace města Olomouce jako antického hrdiny Hérakla ve lví kůži. Upozorňuje na pozoruhodné použití tohoto námětu v malířské výzdobě stropu fary ve Slavoníně, kde je tento motiv, charakteristický pro barokní ikonografii města Olomouce, použit v souvislosti s pruským obléháním v roce 1758.  / The paper deals with the motif personification of the city of Olomouc as a classical hero Herakles in lion's skin. Highlights the notable use of the theme in the decoration of the ceiling painting in the parish Slavonín where this motif, characteristic of the Baroque iconography of Olomouc, used in connection with the Prussian siege of the year in 1758.

The essay analyzes how ceiling painting developed in the 17th century through a modification of the ceiling structure. It underlines a first great diversity of typology of this painting, before celestial subjects imposed themselves and Louis XIV, through Le Brun, dominated the unity of this pictorial field around his own image.

(…) Zadanie to (…) nie łatwe, gdyż nie dysponujemy praktycznie żadnymi informacjami dotyczącymi biografii malarza, który na dodatek pracował zarówno dla katolików, jak i unitów, a tradycyjnie sztukę obu tych kręgów kulturowych starano się badać w oparciu o odmienne założenia metodologiczne. (…) Jak zastrzega Autorka (…) nie jest to klasyczna monografia. (…) Sporo miejsca poświęcono (…) zagadnieniom teoretycznym, przede wszystkim metodologii badań nad malarstwem ikonowym (…) oraz inspirowanych, w znacznej mierze badaniami nad nowoczesnymi zjawiskami artystycznymi, rozważaniami na temat relacji centrum – prowincja – peryferie w sztuce.

Fakt, iż Sławiński pracował jednocześnie dla kościoła unickiego i katolickiego jest sprawą zasadniczą i kluczem do formalnej analizy jego twórczości. Odrzucenie ahistorycznych metod badania osiemnastowiecznych zjawisk artystycznych, w kręgu kościoła unickiego pozwoliło odmalować zupełnie inny obraz ówczesnej kultury, a to uważam za jedno z dwóch najważniejszych osiągnięć Autorki. Jej stanowisko w tej materii najlepiej oddają słowa: «(…) wnętrza cerkiewne nie muszą jednak oznaczać utraty wschodniej tożsamości religijnej przez wiernych Cerkwi unickiej w Rzeczypospolitej, jeśli tylko ową tożsamość rozumieć się będzie historycznie, a nie przez pryzmat chyba zbyt rozbudowanej symboliki cerkiewnego dziedzictwa właściwej XIX– i XX wiecznemu prawosławiu rosyjskiemu». Drugą zaletą książki o Sławińskim jest dobre usytuowanie jego twórczości w relacjach centrum-peryferie (oczywiście peryferie, a nie prowincja!!!), odrzucenie łańcuchowego modelu w poszukiwaniu artystycznej genealogii malarza. W pełni zgadzam się z Autorką, że przy bardzo złożonych mechanizmach inspiracji w malarstwie środkowoeuropejskim ostatniej ćwierci XVIII w. z jednej strony, a braku źródeł pisanych z drugiej, należy wykazać daleko idącą powściągliwość wobec próby wskazania nauczyciela Sławińskiego. Pracę można uznać za (…) wypełniającą sporą lukę w badaniach nad osiemnastowiecznym malarstwem polskim."

The paintings decorating the pilgrimage church of St. Liborius in Jesenec were traditionally attributed to the painter Karl Harringer (1687–1734), a native of Vienna. However, recent findings indicate that the paintings on the vault of the church were done by the painter Jan Michael Fissé from Znojmo (1686–1732) around the year 1710. This study examines the parallels between these paintings and six sermons preached in the church in Jesenec by
the well-known Moravian preacher Bohumír Josef Hynek Bílovský (1659-1725) in the years 1708 to 1713, at a time when the church was under construction and gradually being rebuilt. A comparison of text and image has shown that Fissé’s paintings were not simply illustrations or a pictorial accompaniment to Bílovský’s discourses, but rather that the sermons and the way they were structured provided a sort of guide to viewing and interpreting the paintings. The message contained in the text was further developed by the ceiling paintings by means of their own particular devices, and they thus created a further level of meaning, going beyond the text or the discourse of the preacher and inviting viewers to make use of their own powers of imagination. The relationship between the paintings on the vault and Bílovský’s sermons is thus not a completely direct one, but it is still clear that the texts were a very important part of the interpretation of the artistic decoration of the church at that time and one of the ways through which Fissé’s complicated scenes could be understood.

Tra il 1582 e il 1587 il cantiere della chiesa gesuita di San Rocco a Lisbona divenne un centro di sperimentazione d’avanguardia della pittura di architetture in prospettiva. L’articolo completa lo studio precedente, presentato nel n. 887 di Arte Cristiana, stabilendo l’anno 1588 come terminus ante quem della pittura del soffitto. L’ideazione e la realizzazione dell’opera seguì una tempistica stringente, che unì l’interesse per la novità della pittura di architetture in prospettiva da parte dei committenti (1586), alla progettazione di tre disegni e alla scelta di quello di quadratura (1587) e alla sua immediata esecuzione (1588), motivata anche dall’urgenza di smontare l’imponente impalcatura innalzata sin dal 1573. La predilezione per la quadratura da parte dei committenti non precluse la possibilità di elaborare programma iconografico, dotto e articolato, incentrato su temi eucaristici. L’Esaltazione della Santa Croce e degli strumenti del martirio, dipinta al centro del soffitto, costituisce il cuore significante della composizione e stabilisce una profonda connessione con le raffigurazioni delle architetture effimere innalzate per la solenne donazione delle reliquie del 25 gennaio 1588. Il preposito Pedro da Fonseca S.I., filosofo e teologo di grande levatura, può essere indicato come l’ideatore dell’intera operazione e come l’autore dell’edificio simbolico-iconografico che la sperimentazione della quadratura seppe ‘elevare’ sul soffitto di San Rocco.

My presentation reappraises the rift between Enlightenment and Baroque in Habsburg Central Europe. Looking at images both pictorial and metaphorical I seek to flesh out how Enlighteners' inserted their aims and proclivities into inherited visual and conceptual systems, while boldly rejecting their immediate surroundings as "Baroque", i.e. as an obsolete, stultifying past that refused to end and that Enligtenment would overcome. My talk will discuss works by F. A. Maulbertsch, Johann Q. Jahn, and Joseph von Sonnenfels.

Ceiling and mural paintings are constitutive elements in the design of baroque interiors. Unlike all other forms of pictorial art, these truly three-dimensional artistic media define early modern architecture literally from above, through colourful and complex iconographic programmes: in ecclesiastical as well as secular environments, in residential palaces and ceremonial halls, churches and monasteries, grand staircases or libraries. Thus, baroque murals on walls and ceilings could unfold an astonishing diversity and capacity for artistic innovation from the mid16th to the late 18th century.

The Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Painting in Germany (Corpus der barocken Deckenmalerei in Deutschland, CbDD) conducts research on the interior decoration of walls and ceilings created between 1550 and 1800 within the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany.

For the first time, a corpus of more than 5000 monuments, including preserved, destroyed and restored examples, is comprehensively documented, analysed, and presented: by texts as well as new and historical photographs and drawings, in its art historical, architectural and historical contexts,  in an online database via innovative digital technology.

The Corpus of Baroque Ceiling Painting in Germany (CbDD) is a research project within the academies’ programme of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and the Humanities (Union der Deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften), directed by Stephan Hoppe (LMU Munich). It is supervised by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften) in Munich. It makes a significant contribution to the documentation, safeguarding and visualisation of our cultural heritage.

Two research-teams at the Institut für Kunstgeschichte of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and the Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg of the Philipps-Universität in Marburg cooperate closely, granting in-depth research and a high quality of photographic reproduction of the objects. The project was approved in October 2014 and started April 1, 2015. The duration of the research project is 25 years.
