Atomic Weapons

This book chapter investigates the ways in which nuclear science and technology figured in a variety of sculptural forms in early Cold-War Britain. First it shows how in the 1930s and 1940s constructivist sculptors, such as Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo, referenced atomic science in their work, encouraged by contact with the crystallographer J.D. Bernal. Through works alluding to the geometry of crystal structures they signified optimistic hope for increased human understanding in a future Socialist society. The chapter then examines how the creation and use of atomic weapons led surrealist and social-realist sculptors, such as Henry Moore and Peter Peri, to make ambivalent or critical works about nuclear science and technology, exemplified in sculptural representations of nuclear arms and the disarmament campaign (in which several sculptors and critics were active). Lastly, the chapter considers the extent to which the expressionist sculpture of a younger generation of British sculptors, such as Reg Butler, Lynn Chadwick and Bernard Meadows, has also been understood to reflect fears of nuclear warfare, despite an absence of explicit ‘nuclear’ signification. As this now familiar interpretation of their imagery has invariably been supported by Herbert Read’s famous characterization of it as an expression of ‘the geometry of fear’, the chapter interrogates the intended meaning of his epithet and how and when it became associated with the nuclear threat. Throughout the chapter, interpretations by sculptors and contemporary critics of these disparate sculptural engagements with nuclear science and technology are scrutinized, alongside analysis of how they related to the aesthetic and ideological oppositions of the Cold War.

(London: Black Dog Publishing and Art Gallery of Ontario, 2015) constellates quotations, descriptions of social facts, and photographic images of various nuclear calculators. The result is a critical perspective on the history of nuclearism and its social contexts.

Cały współczesny system prawny i instytucjonalny z zakresu broni nuklearne jest zbudowany na zarządzaniu, kontroli i umowach ukształtowanych w okresie zimnej wojny. Od momentu podpisania pierwszej umowy w 1963 r. wśród działań nieproliferacyjnych wymienić można: umowy zakazujące produkcji broni atomowej państwom, które jej nie posiadały oraz nakazujące jej nieproliferację potęgom jądrowym, porozumienia zmniejszające liczbę istniejących głowic oraz te tworzące strefy bezatomowe. Jako że niemożliwe jest całkowite pozbycie się arsenałów jądrowych, a deklaratywny wyraz poparcia dla różnego typu inicjatyw często kończy się na tym poziomie, międzynarodowa kontrola zbrojeń będzie na tyle skuteczna, na ile silna będzie wola państw sygnatariuszy porozumień międzynarodowych. Tylko spełniając ten warunek, międzynarodowe wysiłki będą miały wpływ na zmniejszenie realnego zagrożenia rozprzestrzeniania i groźby użycia broni jądrowej – jak w przypadku programu Islamskiej Republiki Iranu. Słowa kluczowe: broń jądrowa, nieproliferacja, kontrola zbrojeń, prawo międzynarodowe, układy rozbrojeniowe, strefy bezatomowe. Wstęp W chwili skonstruowania broni nuklearnej świat zarówno nie był przygotowany do obrony przed konsekwencjami jej użycia, jak i nieuzbrojony w prawne środki obrony przed jej proliferacją. Dopiero upływ czasu pokazał, że rozprzestrzenianie broni jądro-wej, w połączeniu z rozpowszechnianiem technologii, a także wiedzy o podwójnym za-stosowaniu materiałów nuklearnych, stanowi rosnące zagrożenie dla wszystkich krajów na świecie. Od początku istnienia broni masowej zagłady pytanie o to, czy sam fakt jej posiadania, a więc i możliwości jej użycia, jest prawnie dopuszczalny w świetle obowiązującego prawa międzynarodowego, budziło wielkie kontrowersje. Istotnym elementem ograniczenia wyścigu zbrojeń okresu zimnej wojny, począwszy od tzw. planu Barucha z 1946 roku 1 , zmierzającego do oddania projektów jądrowych pod kontrolę międzynarodowej agencji, były układy o redukcji zbrojeń. 1 Bernard M. Baruch opracował i przedstawił ONZ swój plan stanowiący propozycję przymusowej międzynarodowej kontroli nad energią atomową oraz powołania w tym celu Międzynarodowego Organu ds. Rozwoju Energii Atomowej (ang. International Atomic Development Authority). Nowym elementem tej propozycji były sankcje, które miały być wymierzane w państwa nieprzestrzegające porozumienia o kontroli

One of President Barack Obama’s favorite solutions to reducing armed conflict in the world centers around his desire to rid the world of nuclear weapons.  While this simplistic formula has certainly been voiced by other occupants of the oval office, the world is, and always has been, an extremely dangerous place, and the machinations of competing spheres of power will always exist in human history.  Coupled with an aggressive Russia and China, the dangers associated with the new era of radical Islamic extremism rubricate the need to view the naiveté of President Obama’s vision of a planet without nuclear weapons with great caution, particularly when a large part of the Obama solution calls for the unilateral weakening of America’s nuclear arsenal.


Strong American leadership requires assessing the world as it really is, not how one wishes it to be.  A world in which the United States and other free nations do not possess nuclear weapons is both unrealistic and undesirable.  The Obama Doctrine, which seems intent on employing scare tactics and demonizing the possession of nuclear weapons, imperils both the world and America.  Unilateral reductions of America’s nuclear forces create a vulnerable and weakened nation that can be easily intimidated.  Furthermore, such action increases the promotion of nuclear weapon development in other nations. 


Obama’s desire to rid the world of nuclear weapons cannot be achieved.  Unfortunately, however, its ability to hamstring America’s nuclear capabilities is all too real.  When it comes to nuclear weapons, our policies must be fully rooted in the context of common sense.  Unilateral reductions in America’s nuclear arsenal are disastrous when confronting totalitarian fanatics.  The only established defense against nuclear weapons are nuclear weapons, and nuclear weapons cannot be abandoned because of nuclear weapons.

Barry Zellen's State of Doom: Bernard Brodie, the Bomb, and the Birth of the Bipolar World represents a groundbreaking and fascinating biography of Bernard Brodie, the 'American Clausewitz.' Brodie's early and original work on nuclear strategy became the foundation for theories of nuclear deterrence that were eventually pursued by both the United States and the Soviet Union and helped the world avoid nuclear holocaust. The lessons that Zellen draws from the life of this original nuclear strategist are profound and worth pondering today relative to our present strategic dilemmas. This is an important book and a must-read for students, scholars, and practitioners of warfare in general and nuclear policy in specific.
