Athenian society

La desigual distribución de la riqueza bajo las condiciones actuales del capitalismo es, como bien se sabe, el eje sobre el que Piketty ha centrado su atención; asimismo, forma parte de sus reflexiones el posible rol del estado, a través de los sistemas de tributación, como modo de in-tervenir en la distribución y atenuar el impacto de la desigualdad, incluso de propender a cierta igualación. No son sus respuestas concretas sino los interrogantes y los aspectos conceptuales a veces subyacentes en las respuestas mismas, los que aquí abordamos, en la medida en que nos convocan a reflexionar sobre la especificidad de la Atenas del siglo IV a.C. a partir de cuestiones que no dejan de remitir a la situación presente. Como en muchos otros aspectos de la Grecia antigua, las estimaciones acerca de cuán igualitarias o desiguales fueron las póleis según la distribución de la riqueza han conducido a que, sobre la misma base documental, unos las hayan considerado sociedades relativamente igualitarias, mientras que otros las han percibido como sociedades desiguales. En este contexto, la distribución de la riqueza y la eva-luación del grado de igualdad o desigualdad en la Atenas del siglo IV han encontrado un lugar privilegiado entre los intereses de los especialistas, debido a la conjunción de los datos disponibles sobre población y riqueza y a cierto nivel de consenso dentro de la comunidad académica en cuanto a la posibilidad de usar estos números, más de allá de discusiones sobre la interpretación de ciertos datos. Mi objetivo, tras revisar los datos e interpretaciones plan-teadas, es tratar de ensamblar este conjunto para producir un modelo de distribución de la riqueza entre diferentes sectores de la comunidad de ciudadanos atenienses. A partir de esto, se extrae el coeficiente de Gini con la idea de ponderar, dentro de lo que cabe, el grado de desigualdad que implica determinada disposición de los datos, cuando se asumen ciertos puntos de partida. Mi propia percepción a partir de los diferentes argumentos esgrimidos, conforme a los datos ensamblados, me llevará a proponer un modelo de distribución de la riqueza, con el cual voy a configurar un posible cuadro de distribución de la tierra, el elemento más significativo de la riqueza. Finalmente, planteo diversas cuestiones abiertas al debate conforme a los ejes de este evento. Mi perspectiva es que, a pesar de las importantes disparidades, en términos relativos y comparativos no en términos absolutos, claro está, la sociedad ateniense fue relativamente igualitaria.

The relief fragment in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Inv. 12059 of unknown provenance comes from the left corner slab of the tympanon of a small pediment and carries a relief depicting a leftwards reclining Papposilenus, who can be identified by the close-fitting woolen garment. The relief together with the projecting ledge on which the Silenus lies is carved from one block. The relief fragment Inv. 4760 in the Acropolis Museum, which shows  the figure of a Papposilenus reclining to the right wearing an identical woolen garment, can  be attributed to the right corner of the same pediment on the grounds of measurements, technical features and style. Papposilenus supports himself with his right arm on a wineskin, whose neck he squeezes in such a way that the wine can pour into the drinking horn. Both relief fragments come from the pediment of a small building, very probably a temple-shaped choregic monument. The naiskos, which can be dated to the 2nd half of the 4th century BC on account  of the relief style, stood (very probably) on the Street of the Tripods east of the entrance to the sanctuary of Dionysos.

Das Relieffragment im Athener Archäologischen Nationalmuseum Inv. 12059 unbekannter Herkunft stammt von der linken Eckplatte des Tympanons eines kleinen Giebels und trägt die Reliefdarstellung eines nach links gelagerten Papposilens, der durch das eng anliegen- de  wollene  Trikot  identifiziert  werden  kann.  Das  Relief  ist  zusammen  mit  der  vortretenden  Standleiste, auf dem der Silen liegt, aus demselben Block gearbeitet. Das Relieffragment Inv. 4760 im Akropolis-Museum, das die Figur eines nach rechts gelagerten Papposilens mit  einem identischen Wolltrikot zeigt, ist auf der Grundlage der Maße, der technischen Merkmale und des Stils der gegenüberliegenden rechten Ecke desselben Giebels zuzuweisen. Mit dem rechten Arm stützt der Papposilen sich auf einen Weinschlauch, dessen Hals er auf eine Weise zusammendrückt, dass sich der Wein in das Trinkhorn ergießen kann. Die beiden Relieffragmente stammen vom Giebel eines kleinen Gebäudes, sehr wahrscheinlich eines tempelförmigen choregischen Monuments. Der Naiskos, der aufgrund des Reliefstils in die 2. Hälfte des 4. Jhs. v. Chr. datiert werden kann, stand (sehr wahrscheinlich) an der Tripodenstraße östlich vom Eingang zum Dionysosheiligtum.

The anaylisis of the public and personal economic factors, joined to that prosopographical of the political leaders at the time and that of the citizenship rights, undertaken before, betray a complex but coherent scene of the Athenian society at the end of fifth century and early fourth century B.C., where all of these elements interact and explain each other. The adverses economic conditions contribute to increase the tensions and the risk of losing rights.

The aim of this essay is to present an iconographic overview of the elderly in “daily-life,” or “genre,” scenes on late Archaic to Classical (c. 520–400 BC) Athenian red-figure vases through the examination of the various traits of their age-related “transformation.”In order to understand how the elderly were viewed in a contemporary context, the essay begins with a survey of perceptions of old age garnered from ancient literary sources. It is followed by a presentation of the iconographical evidence,
which is separated into three parts. The first part will examine symposion (drinking party) and komos (revelry) scenes, which constitute a significant portion of the late Archaic red-figure production (c. 520–480 BC) and often include aged partygoers and, in some cases, aged hetairai (courtesans). The focus of the second part will
shift to depictions of departing warriors, since old men are a basic element of the scenes of this extensive iconographic corpus. Finally, the third section will look at some idiosyncratic depictions of aged artisans and craftsmen and their possible connotations.

This paper examines in detail a hitherto little-known Athenian black-figure tripod pyxis of the mid-6th c. b.C. exhibited at the National Museum in Copenhagen (Inv. n. 4734.) All three legs of it feature multi-figured compositions, depicting gatherings of women and men of various ages. Of particular importance for the understanding of the iconography is the depiction of a woman uplifting her veil in the centre of the scene on one leg of the vase, a gesture with marital connotations. Through a detailed analysis of the scenes and their unusual features, it is argued that all three scenes may refer to a major family event, possibly the wedding feast, as well as to basic notions of social organization and their festive expressions in Archaic Athens.

This paper discusses the problem of the historiographical constructionof the concept of polis, using as strategy the analysis of the historiographicaltreatment to the subject of the inclusion/exclusion of the resident aliens (metics)in the Classical Athenian polis. Six models are proposed: the religious city, theconsumer-stamental city, the modern city, the class city, the institutional city, andthe philosophical-existential city; after that, the paper discusses some recenthistoriographical alternatives.

Este artigo discute o problema da construção historiográfica do conceito de polis, utilizando como estratégia a análise do tratamento historiográfico ao tema da inclusão/exclusão dos estrangeiros residentes (metecos) na polis ateniense clássica. São propostos seis modelos: a cidade religiosa, a cidade consumidoraestamental, a cidade moderna, a cidade de classes, a cidade institucional e a cidade filosófico-existencial; após isto, o artigo discute algumas alternativas historiográficas recentes.

«Ὅ τι ἂν δόξῃ τοῖς πλείοσι, τοῦτ᾽ εἶναι τέλος καὶ τοῦτ᾽ εἶναι τὸ δίκαιον» (Αριστοτέλης, Πολιτικά, 1317b5-7). Για πολλούς ερευνητές, η Δημοκρατία συνιστά το μεγαλύτερο επίτευγμα και το σημαντικότερο κληροδότημα της αρχαίας Ελλάδας (της αρχαίας Αθήνας) στον σύγχρονο κόσμο. Πρόκειται για ένα φαινόμενο μοναδικό και ανεπανάληπτο στην ανθρώπινη ιστορία· ως προς το περιεχόμενο, την έκταση, τις συνέπειες και τις επιδράσεις του.
Η παρούσα έκδοση ιχνηλατεί την πορεία προς τη συγκρότηση της Αθηναϊκής Δημοκρατίας και παράλληλα εξετάζει το κοινωνικό-πολιτικό φαινόμενο της πόλεως-κράτους· κωδικοποιεί τις πρώτες αρχές της δημοκρατικής οργάνωσης και παρουσιάζει τους κυρίαρχους πολιτειακούς θεσμούς στη διαχρονική εξέλιξή τους.
Θεμελιακό διακριτικό της έκδοσης είναι η συστηματική καταγραφή και ανάδειξη της μαρτυρίας των αρχαίων πηγών, ώστε να παρέχεται στον μελετητή, τον φοιτητή, τον αναγνώστη, η δυνατότητα να προσπελάσει άμεσα τους τύπους των ήλων της Ιστορίας.
Η πορεία στον ελληνικό ιστορικό χρόνο αρχίζει από τις ομηρικές συνελεύσεις και τα πολιτικά σημαινόμενά τους (γέροντες/άριστοι, αγορή), καταγράφει τον θρύλο του Θησέα, παρακολουθεί τις κλιμακούμενες πολιτικές μεταρρυθμίσεις (Σόλων, Κλεισθένης, Εφιάλτης, Περικλής) και καταλήγει σε θεσμούς ρηξικέλευθους (Εκκλησία του Δήμου, Βουλή, Ηλιαία), σε μια ανάταση δημοκρατίας.
Από ένα ευρύτερο πλαίσιο (ιστορικό-γεωγραφικό), το οποίο εκτείνεται μέχρι τη Σπάρτη και τον Λυκούργου, η πορεία συγκλίνει στον Αττικό χωρόχρονο, στην ανάπτυξη και εξέλιξη της Αθηναϊκής Δημοκρατίας· μιας πολιτείας η οποία διαρκώς επιζητούσε πληρέστερες μορφές κοινωνικής και πολιτικής οργάνωσης, στοχεύοντας την ισονομία, την αξιοκρατία, το δικαιότερο κοινωνικό πρόσωπο· ως αποτέλεσμα, κατέστη καύχημα των πολιτών της και Ελλάδος παίδευσις.
Ως θεσμικά συντεταγμένο πολιτειακό σύστημα, η Δημοκρατία δύσκολα καθιδρύεται στις ανθρώπινες κοινωνίες· όταν όμως καθιδρυθεί, τότε δεν εξαλείφεται. Απλώς, ενίοτε, αναστέλλεται για λίγο…

This paper shows that the staging of secondary characters in Sophocles' tragedies is closely related to the place of lower-status citizens in Athenian society. Citizens who belonged to inferior socio-political groups could easily identify with 'little characters' in the play. The way in which those figure were staged both reflected the contemporary reality and encouraged underprivileged citizens to take an active part in the political life of Athens.
