Arabic Graffiti

"Il y a quelques années, nous avons entrepris une recherche sur les graffiti arabes , une recherche longue et passionnante dont nous pressentons qu'elle pourra intéresser non seulement les épigraphistes, mais aussi les historiens, sociologues des religions ou linguistes travaillant sur les deux premiers siècles de l'Hégire dans le contexte d'émergence de l'islam. En effet, en 1998, nous avions posé les premiers jalons d'une réflexion se fondant sur l'analyse des graffiti de Jordanie, réflexion à travers laquelle nous devinions la matière d'une orientation nouvelle en épigraphie arabe. Lors de cette première phase d'étude, nous avions limité notre approche à un nombre restreint de graffiti que nous avions analysés très globalement. La finalité était alors de montrer l'importance et la nécessité de mêler d'avantage l'épigraphie aux études sur le Coran, ces dernières ne devant plus se satisfaire des seuls travaux fondés sur la critique textuelle, religieuse, littéraire ou historique visant à mieux cerner le statut de l'écriture coranique. Le Coran, s'il demeure le fondement de la croyance des musulmans dans leur ensemble, n'en demeure pas moins un texte s'inscrivant dans un moment de l'histoire et en un lieu géographique connu des hommes : selon la tradition arabo musulmane, il fut l'objet d'une révélation divine durant le premier quart du VII e siècle de notre ère en Arabie occidentale. Cependant, il peut être soumis à une analyse visant à reconstituer les grandes étapes de son élaboration matérielle sans que celle-ci doive obligatoirement s'appuyer sur les sources historiographiques et hagiographiques islamiques dont on sait qu'elles sont tardives par rapport aux événements [...].
il peut aussi, au titre de la matérialité, s'étudier sur le terrain : sur les murs des monuments antiques ou arabes, sur les rochers le long des pistes, dans les steppes où les Arabes apposèrent librement des inscriptions. Ces travaux de terrain, de longues prospections visant à rassembler les graffiti dits " coraniques " , permettent de rappeler que le Coran n'est pas un corpus fermé et qu'au-delà de sa forme de prédilection-le livre-il peut être aussi voix (la psalmodie), art (la calligraphie) et donc pierre ! Ainsi, les graffiti gravés sur des rochers, des parois montagneuses ou monumentales, sont des textes libres et privés, laissés par des Arabes anonymes et jamais passés au crible de la censure linguistique, politique ou religieuse..."

The wave of uprisings and mass protests that took place in Egypt since January 25th 2011 has determined the rise of a new dimension of social freedom and the flourishing of graffiti could be considered as an aspect of this newly conquered freedom and a mark of a contentious appropriation of  public space. The writings on the streets of Cairo are just one of the elements of a vibrant, youth managed and relational protest art that has its point of departure in the recent social and historical context. The political and social changes the Arab World underwent are accompanied by a re-setting of national identity representations, an ongoing process reflected in context specific artistic products and graffiti is a very productive example in the contemporary Egyptian context. Graffiti, has been defined as a medium of communication, situated at the intersection of art and language with style, color, placement and form acting as “visual modifiers” (Philips 1999: 39). This article analyses how symbols and colors are used as modifying elements in the graffiti of revolutionary Cairo, within a  process of memorialization and reinterpretation of identity.

This article aims to set the background for an analysis of Arabic graffiti as a phenomen on of urban popular culture within the framework of globalization, as an artistic manifestation that plays on the relationship between tradition and modernity. The direction proposed opposes the Arnoldian type vision of culture which is familiar to the Arabic-Islamic cultural heritage and is based on the studying of everyday life and cultural products of society in the spirit of the Birmingham School and Henri Lefebvre's statement considers the everyday as a concept that can be used as a "guiding principle for understanding society" (Lefebvre, 2000:28). The article has four parts: the first one is concerned with delimiting the field of Arabic graffiti production, the second part aims at placing graffiti within a global dynamics of culture which leads to the need to approach it as a genre that negotiates between the local and the global, while the last part looks at Arabic graffiti as articulations of conflict and cosmopolitanism.

The January 25th 2011 Revolution that interrupted the thirty years long
reign of Hosni Mubarak brought about, among social and political changes, a
series of transformations pertaining to the cultural panorama of Egypt.
Graffiti is one of the cultural practices greatly influenced by the revolutionary context, to the extent that it has come to be regarded as the art of the revolution, a most revealing and trustworthy medium of artistic expression and political participation. As revolutionary Egyptian graffiti began to be scrutinized in academic works under its many aspects, little has been said about its pre-revolutionary journey. This article puts together a brief history of modern Egyptian graffiti analyzing the dynamics that shapes both current and past manifestations within the scope of creating a more detailed perspective, away from the oversimplifying gaze that reduces the practice to its revolutionary dimension or underlines its exoticism.

The recent uprisings in the Arab World are indicators of continuous contestation of authoritarian regimes, a continuing process that leaves its mark on the field of cultural production. Revolutionary graffiti represent a dynamic self-expression practice of public opinion in Cairo, Egypt, during and in the aftermath of the 2011 Revolution. As a medium of both communication and subversion, residing at the intersection of art and transgression, graffiti largely serve to re-appropriate the public space and their popularity is mainly due to the themes addressed and their relevance to issues of everyday life. But can this re-appropriation be seen as more than just a socio-political territory marking of the city? Can graffiti be integrated into a discussion about culture in the Arab World?

The Egyptian Revolution of 2011 had among the common features of political popular expression in the public space the overwhelming presence of poetry to which Elliot Colla attributes a prominent role from the beginning of the uprising being not an ornament but a soundtrack contributing to the revolutionary act  (Colla 2012:47). The political graffiti of Cairo, a cultural practice brought about and fueled by the revolution is not exempted, with poetry acting as the sound recorded by graffiti, transformed at the same time into a rhetorical device. This article will present an analysis of a selected corpus of graffiti featuring revolutionary imagery and fragments of poetry, focusing on the specificity of the re-appropriation of literary fragments used as elements of a revolutionary, contentious rhetoric, and the creation of an inter-textual topicality that transcends historical contexts. We will follow, at the same time, the relationship between poetry and graffiti in order to clarify the mechanisms of a lyrical dimension of Egyptian protest graffiti.

La révolution égyptienne du 25 Janvier 2011 a laissé ses traces sur le paysage artistique du pays, soit qu’on parle de beaux-arts ou de street-art. Bénéficiant d’une attention médiatique accrue et dans le contexte du changement de l’attitude vers la culture populaire dans le monde arabe, le graffiti du centre-ville du Caire est devenu l'un des emblèmes de la révolution. Ce qui apparaissait d'abord comme une pratique artistique invasive avec un futur incertain semble continuer d’alimenter la construction de l'imagerie de la contestation par sa présence écrasante dans les médias officielles et non-officielles. Le graffiti égyptien parcourt un trajet normal dans notre monde hautement technologisé  en envahissant le virtuel après avoir conquis le paysage visuel de la cité. Du virtuel il est repris et présenté dans des volumes spécialisés ou des études académiques en formant, pour la première fois, un discours sur le graffiti arabe contemporain analysable dans le cadre des études culturelles arabes.
