Resumen En el presente artículo realizamos una revisión de los trabajos de investigación efectuados en el Cerro virgen de la Muela y su entorno, desde la intervención en 2016, prospección intensiva y geotécnica del terreno, hasta la primera campaña de excavaciones en 2017 en el yacimiento.

Resumen. Presentamos los resultados de la investigación arqueológica realizada en el Cerro Virgen de la Muela (Driebes) que demuestran la existencia de una ocupación prolongada desde el Bronce Final en la que destaca el oppidum carpetano y la posterior ciudad romana, que consideramos es la antigua Caraca. Los trabajos de un equipo multidisciplinar han permitido certificar la importante entidad del enclave y su secuencia cultural.
Abstract. We show the results of the archaeological research carried out on the Cerro Virgen de la Muela (Driebes), which show the existence of a prolonged occupation from the Late Bronze Age, in which is important the carpetanian oppidum and the later Roman city, probably Caraca. The work of a multidisciplinary team has made it possible to certify the importance of the settlement and its cultural sequence.

This paper focuses on the study of Second Iron Age settlements and their territory from a spatial perspective, analyzing both the characteristics of the different sites (location, presence of fortification, etc.) and their relationship with the environment by using the tools provided by the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study area comprises the middle course of the Henares River (Guadalajara province, Spain), from the confluence of the Salado River to its junction with the Badiel as well as the valleys of some of its tributaries. The archaeological records come from surface surveys conducted to elaborate the archaeological map of different municipalities in the Henares valley. These surveys have helped to increase the list of known sites included in the study

The archaeological site of Cerro de la Virgen de la Muela, the ancient Roman city of Caraca, is placed on Driebes, a village located in the Spanish province of Guadalajara which is included in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. This  city  was  strategically  based  on  central Spain, in  a  hill alongside Tagus river surrounded by  two  streams  running  Eastwards,  Arroyo  del Barranco,  and  Westwards,  Arroyo  Salobre. Also, there is evidence of river navigation at the Tagus river as some amphorae were found associated to a hypothetic Roman pier in the nearby northern village of Trillo. In  this  paper  we  want  to  summarize  the publications  of  the  multidisciplinary  research team involved in the study of this archaeological site.

Resumen: Presentamos un acueducto romano localizado en el término municipal de driebes, que abastecería a la ciudad romana del Cerro de la Virgen de la Muela, y que ha sido identificada como la antigua Caraca. esta obra de ingeniería es prueba de la relevancia que esta ciudad tuvo en la época altoimperial. Abstract: in this paper we describe a roman aqueduct located in the valley of the tajo river, in driebes, which served for the water supply of the roman city located in the Cerro de la Virgen de la Muela, probably the city of Caraca. this enginerial work is an evidence of the relevance of this city during the High roman empire.

Resumen:

Las excavaciones arqueológicas en el poblado de la II Edad del Hierro del Cerro de La Gavia han permitido distinguir cuatro fases de ocupación diferentes (Paleolítico, II Edad del Hierro, tardoantigüedad y guerra civil española). La fase de ocupación más importante corresponde a un poblado de la Segunda Edad del Hierro con tres momentos constructivos diferenciados y  una presencia continuada en el lugar desde el s. IV a.C. hasta el I. d.C. La presente comunicación se centra en el estudio del urbanismo y la vivienda en el poblado  El primer momento constructivo apenas conserva restos de sus estructuras. Parece tratarse de un hábitat de cierta entidad, pues se extiende prácticamente por todo el cerro, que estaría constituido por viviendas de planta rectangular con zócalo de piedra y probablemente alzados de adobes con cubiertas de material perecedero. Una segunda fase se levanta sobre las estructuras de la anterior, correspondiendo a un poblado articulado a partir de dos calles, cuya entrada se ubicaría en la zona Norte del cerro. Probablemente esta entrada iría amurallada y protegida por dos bastiones. Las excavaciones han puesto al descubierto la calle Este, compuesta por una hilera de casas que cerraba el poblado por su parte oriental, y la manzana central del poblado. Las casas que dan a la parte septentrional del yacimiento se levantaban sobre una terraza artificial y sus traseras servirían a modo de muro de fortificación. La  manzana central, por su parte, cuenta con dos filas de casas en su parte media que debían tener acceso por las dos calles que la delimitaban. Provisionalmente esta fase se fecha entre finales del s. III y comienzos del siglo II a.C. En esta época la población desborda el núcleo encastrillado originario y se extiende por las lomas próximas.
Este hábitat se abandona hacia mediados de la segunda centuria. La circunstancia de que no se hayan recogido apenas materiales arqueológicos hace suponer que este abandono se produjo de forma pacífica, a excepción de tres viviendas de la manzana central, donde se registran evidencias de un fuerte incendio. El abandono del poblado no se dilató mucho en el tiempo, ya que la tercera fase se levanta prácticamente sobre la planta de la fase anterior. El poblado estuvo habitado hasta finales del siglo I. d.C., como atestigua la presencia en el mismo de TSH, TSHB, etc.

Abstract:

Archaeological excavations in the “Cerro de La Gavia” allowed us to state four diferent occupation periods (Paleolitic, II Iron Age, Late Antiquity: and Spanish Civil War), being the most important stage the Second Iron Age one corresponding with a village having three differentiated constructive moments, and a continuous staying at the place since the IV century b.C. till  the I c. a.C. Present communication mainly studies the inside urbanism and building structures at this village. The first constructive moment hardly keeps the rests of its structures. It seems to have been an habitat of a certain significance, because it extends throughout almost the whole of the top of the hill, and it’s formed by houses of rectangular plant with stone socle and probably raised of mud walls with a vegetal cover. A second stage rises over the previous one structures, depicting a plant of a village articulated along two streets, whose entrance would be located in the North side of the hill, probably were fortified and protected by two bastions as well. Along the eastern street excavation works have discovered a row of houses set side by side closing the East part of the town. The houses placed in the North side of the settlement raise on an artificial terrace and their back would also serve as a fortification wall. The central block, on the other hand, has two rows of houses in the center, that must have been accessible from the two attached streets. Provisionally this stage is dated between the end of the IIId century and beginnings of IInd century b.C. At this time population overflows the original nucleus and extends over close hills.
This habitat is left around the half of the second century. The fact of the absence of archaeological materials allows us to soport the idea that it was done in a peacefuly way, with the exception of three houses of the central block, where evidences of a fire are registered. Town abandonment did not dilate so much, since the third stage nearly rises on the place of the previous one. The town was inhabited until the end of the Ist century a.C., as it’s testified by the presence of TSH, TSHB, etc.
