Sans quitter son cabinet parisien, par le seul exercice d’une critique aiguisée et d’un croisement systématique des sources (textes anciens, récits de voyage, mesures astronomiques, informations orales...), d’Anville remodèle les contours du monde ancien et moderne, avec une exactitude qui sera validée par les mesures de terrain a posteriori.

Ce livre dresse un portrait tout en nuances d’un géographe de cabinet au siècle des Lumières. Penché derrière l’épaule du savant, le lecteur découvre comment il élabore très tôt une rigoureuse méthodologie de travail, bâtit sa carrière, constitue l’une des plus grandes collections de cartes du XVIIIe siècle, et influence jusqu’à nos jours la représentation du monde et de ses frontières.

Preliminary proposal for a show about a Venetian craft, the first map of Africa. The Fra Mauro planisphere is the masterpiece of late middle age cartography. His map is the first to correspond, to match reality as we now know it from satellites. Its use, connected to space archaeology techniques has permitted the naming of a stunning set of archaeological sites in Ethiopia: the fortress, churches, villages and towns of " Prester John ". Further discoveries and vast new material is planned to be on show at the IES, Addis Ababa and later in other locations, including, if allowed, a full scale reproduction of the original map and the Ethiopian scholar production it stimulated over the last years.

Cults in public places for the ruler of the Roman Empire existed in countries beyond the confines of Italy and the provinces. Comparable to the kingdom of Herod the Great, these countries were ruled by allied and dependant kings and dynasts. The imperial cult in these realms was therefore a sign of political loyalty to Rome. A few very distant cases of imperial cult have also become known (e.g. in India and Southern Mesopotamia). Yet local expressions of political loyalty to Rome have not ranged high among modern explanations for their existence. The present paper argues that the surviving sources can indeed be understood to suggest that the imperial cult in these countries resulted from official agreements of political friendship (amicitia) with Rome.

The article presents a short history of research, focusing on the cartographic representations of Roman religion and its material evidence in the 20th century European scholarship of religious studies, Roman archaeology and digital cartographic studies. By analysing the major works of Roman religious studies where cartographic representations and visualization played a relevant role, the article attempts to establish a methodological approach for a digital cartographic representation of the materiality of Roman religion in the Danubian provinces during the Principate, through the case study of the Digital Map of Sanctuaries of Roman Dacia.

Les humains ont observé le ciel depuis des temps immémoriaux. Ils ont construit des observatoires astronomiques afin de caler des calendriers annuels pour l’agriculture. Cette vision tridimensionnelle allait être à la base d’une cosmographie pleine d’objets célestes et de divinités. La première description de ce type a été fournie par Homère sur le « grand et solide bouclier » fabriqué par Héphaïstos pour Achille (Iliade, 18, 484-609). Elle allait jusqu’à combiner le temps et l’espace sur la même image, reliant ainsi Homère à Einstein.
Il s’avéra cependant plus difficile de décrire la surface de la terre.
Après avoir voyagé de par le monde, les anciens éprouvèrent le besoin de synthétiser l’ensemble de leurs connaissances sur un seul support. Ils ont d’abord cherché les limites du monde habité en le décrivant comme une île au milieu d’un océan, en accord avec le concept d’Homère qui survécut pendant deux millénaires jusqu’au Moyen-Age. Anaximandre de Milet est considéré comme le premier à avoir fait une description du monde vers 550 av. J-C.

Cracking the Fra Mauro code in Central Shewa

A Venetian crowd-sourced map as a vital tool in naming and connecting medieval sites in two Imperial Ethiopian power bases, c. 1380/1530 CE: Shewa and Amhara. Understanding the Towns of the African 'Prester John'. Of Capital cities, hitherto seen as simple military camps.  In central Shewa the map’s precision has permitted the discovery of a few large medieval sites.

Cette étude se rattache aussi à des programmes de recherche qui mettent au point des méthodes de traitement de données altimétriques à haute résolution pour une analyse des paysages dans la longue durée, qui développent des concepts et des méthodes sur les dynamiques socio-environnementales dans la longue durée et qui étudient des dynamiques territoriales à l'échelle régionale pour aider les acteurs locaux à la prise de décision, à l'innovation et à la mise en place de politiques de développement durable. Mes recherches ont été conduites selon une démarche transdisciplinaire associant archéologie, histoire, géographie et foresterie et reposent sur une collecte
d'archives et de documents planimétriques et photographiques, sur un bilan des travaux universitaires, sur un recensement d'informations relatives à la forêt en général, sur des prospections de terrain et sur l'analyse de données LiDAR.

This contribution proposes a new interpretation of the extant fragment of the land registry from Roman Lacimurga. Based on various passages of the Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum, it is argued that the registry map shows the legal breadth of the river Ana (Guadiana). As such, the adjacent centuries had the legal status of subseciva. Comparisons with the land registry of Arausio lend further support to this hypothesis. The reason behind the definition of the river’s legal breadth may be the river’s propensity to flood its banks. Entering the river’s breadth on the registry map helped to visualise the risk of such littoral flooding.

Le présent article propose une nouvelle interprétation du fragment cadastral de Lacimurga datant de l’époque romaine. Sur base de différents passages du Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum il est estimé ici que sur la carte cadastrale en question est représentée la largeur légale du fleuve Ana (Guadiana). Par conséquent, les centuries adjacentes ont le statut juridique d’un subsecivum. Cette hypothèse est appuyée par une comparaison avec le cadastre d’Orange. Les fortes inondations de l’Ana peuvent être considérées comme étant le facteur déterminant pour la fixation de la largeur légale du fleuve. Ainsi, la représentation de la largeur du fleuve sur le plan cadastral est une visualisation du risque de débordement.

Im vorliegenden Artikel wird eine neue Interpretation des römischen Katasterfragments von Lacimurga vorgeschlagen. Auf Grundlage verschiedener Textstellen im Corpus Agrimensorum Romanorum wird hier die These vertreten, dass auf der Katasterkarte die legale Breite des Flusses Ana (Guadiana) dargestellt ist. Folglich haben die angrenzenden Zenturien den rechtlichen Status von subseciva. Ein Vergleich mit dem Kataster von Arausio stützt diese These. Als entscheidender Faktor für die Festlegung einer legalen Flussbreite können die ausgeprägten Hochwasser am Ana angesehen werden. Somit fungiert die Darstellung der Flussbreite auf der Katasterkarte als Visualisierung des Überschwemmungsrisikos am Ufer.

Tracking Earth's past helps us to move from hindsight to foresight in seeking landscape sustainability, a pursuit aided by modern mapping capabilities but hindered by a dearth of historical landscape information. To fill the data gap and exemplify the use of old maps for land-use change sciences, we combined an old paper-based US civil war map and modern aerial photos to derive land-use history and landscape dynamics at fine scales for a region near Chancellorsville, USA, from 1867 to 2014. We also tested how advanced algorithms-object-based image analysis and Random Forests (RF)-could aid in data processing. Automatic classification of the scanned 1867 paper map proved difficult, but its manual digitization could benefit from object-based image segmenta-tion. Classifying digital aerial images was more accurate via the object-based than pixel-based method, but only if the images were segmented appropriately. In the object-based classification, spectral-based features were much more important and useful than shape/geometry features for land-cover discrimination, as ranked by RF. During the 147 years, 32% of the region changed in land type. Settlement and roads increased in extent by 1850% and 691%, respectively, and woodland decreased by 19%. These changes fragmented the landscape, altered the hydrological regime, and affected river morphology. The utility of old maps exemplified here provides an impetus for leveraging extant old maps or historical records to support land-use and global change research. Our study also connotes the importance of preserving and geotagging current non-traditional data, such as photos, videos, and citizen science data, that can serve as a baseline to document future landscape change.

The ancient Egyptians imagined the world naturally as a chaotic, dangerous, unjust and evil-smelling environment. The world in its natural state smelled bad. Isfet, the world of chaos and evil, reeked of fish and fowl. The ancient Egyptians believed that it was their civilization that brought order, justice, cities and sweet smells to the world. In the ideal world of ma'at, the world of order and justice, the sweet aroma of unguents and flowers filled the air. The ideology of ma'at and isfet incorporated not only sensory representatives, in the form of olfactory prototypes, but also spatial representatives. The idea of the stench of the faraway land, the foul odor of uncivilized life, was represented by the swamps of the Nile Delta. The concept of the sweet, familiar smell of home was embodied by cities, the fragrance of civilized life. Within the human-made, ancient Egyptian urban environment, each area and establishment had its own special smell defined by the time of year and the activities that took place within them. The written sources elaborate on the sweet scent of the streets imbued with incense and myrrh during festivals, the perfume of the queen that fills the halls of the palace, the smell of ritual offerings getting mixed in the cult chamber of the temple, and the aroma of incense burnt in simple houses. Nevertheless, the texts don't fail to describe the stench of industrial areas, drunkards whirling around in pleasure in the streets and the unpleasant smell of the sick.

Der Vortrag behandelt zwei wichtige Beschreibstoffe im frühen China, besonders des dritten bis ersten Jahrhunders vor unserer Zeitrechnung, wie sie in den letzten Jahrzehnten bei archäologischen Grabungen entdeckt wurden.
(a) Mit Tusche und Pinsel schrieb man ganz verschiede Textarten zunächst vor allem auf Holztäfelchen und Bambusplättchen. Letztere wurden zu Rollen zusammengebundenen und ergaben so einen relativ preiswerten und leichten Beschreibstoff. In Gräbern fand sich eine Vielzahl verschiedener Bambustexte. Diese lagen mehr als 2000 Jahre in der Feuchtigkeit, so dass sie bei der Ausgrabung “weich wie Nudeln” sind und mit einem besonderen Verfahren getrocknet werden müssen, um den Text darauf wieder lesbar zu machen.
(b) Erste Papiere dienten sowohl als Verpackungsmaterial wie auch als Beschreibstoff. Schrift und Bild konnten damit auf einfache weise kombiniert werden. Untersucht man die genaue Zusammensetzung der verwendeten Materialien ergibt sich ein Bild davon, wie sich diese neue Technologie entwickelte. Wie es der archäologische Zufall will, gibt es unter den frühen Papierfunden auch Landkarten zu bestaunen.

The GIS study of cadastral plans of Mandeure and Mathay (Doubs) has led to the making of geo-referenced maps using different information such as area, orientation, settlement, richness of soil, micro topography. Comparing this information with other categories reveals information on the environment (microtopography, ancient hydrographic systems, rivers, archaeological sites and old maps) that sheds light on the modalities of the creation and evolution of rural field systems at the beginning of the 19th century. It underlines the importance of the roman settlement of Epomanduodurum in the evolution of the valley’s environment.

The geographical position of Babadag Lake, south of the Danube Delta, raises the question of its possible connection to Razim Lake. The study of this connection is based on the diachronic analysis of 38 old maps of the analyzed area from the 16th century until nowadays. In this study, maps are seen as analysis instruments that permit the observation of the evolution of landscape and the chronology of the evolution of the connection between Babadag and Razim Lakes, based on comparison of documents from different historic periods. The cartographic diachronic analysis allows the identification of the big tendencies between opening and closure: periods of Babadag Lake opening to Razim Lake and vice versa, periods of separation of the two Lakes, as well as the current situation when the connection between the two lakes is reduced to expansion of vegetation or to artificial water exchange through a watergate. Basé sur une analyse des programmes scolaires concernant l’étude des cartes et les compétences à développer par rapport à leur interprétation, cet article propose une méthode d’analyse combinée qui développe la lecture des cartes, définie en tant que compétence à saisir, interpréter et tirer un sens d’une information géographique et s’en servir pour comprendre l’organisation d’un territoire. En exemple, nous proposons un modèle d’analyse d’une carte ancienne, en classe d’histoire, qui combine les critères de la pensée historienne au raisonnement géographique relevant de la cartologie.
