Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina und Edison Denisov
zählten seit den 1960er Jahren in der Sowjetunion und
im Westen zu den namhaftesten Komponisten.
Sie galten als „Erben Šostakovčs“und schufen für viele
Sowjetbürger aufregende Klänge, die dem oftmals
widersprüchlichen und überfordernden Leben im
Spätsozialismus Sinn und Bedeutung gaben. Die drei
Komponisten prägten die musikalische Welt der
Sowjetunion und wurden deshalb schon bald unter dem
Namen „Moskauer Trojka“ bekannt. Dieses Buch zeigt,
dass Komponisten, Musiker und ihre Hörer ein wichtiger
Teil der sowjetischen Gesellschaft waren, die im
ausgehenden 20. Jahrhundert einen hyper- und
schließlich instabilen Zustand annahm.

Focusing on a selection of musical works from within three genres –- symphony, string quartet, and the piano repertoire –- I argue that the experience of music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries must be understood in terms of its mediation by the continued presence of the past, not simply through reference to past musical formal materials, but also to the history of experience as musically mediated. Following this logic, I explore a discursive strategy based around philosophical tensions central to the aesthetics of post-Enlightenment musical experience –- in particular, the dialectics of nature and culture, and of mind and body. This allows me to interweave closely strands of musicological and philosophical thought, exploring and developing the latter as they have been taken into, exhibited, and played with in a range of late modernist works. I focus on works that draw attention to their historical situatedness, music by Wolfgang Rihm, Helmut Lachenmann, Giya Kancheli, Valentin Silvestrov, Alfred Schnittke, Thomas Adès, Morton Feldman, and Jukka Tiensuu. I draw on, though outline the need to take forward, Theodor Adorno’s understanding of the historical qualities of musical material, yet also foster an understanding of musical experience situated between past and present without recourse to explicitly postmodern quotation or “intertextuality”, something I implicitly critique. Through illustrating points of affinity and convergence between musical works and experiential issues, I pull together seemingly disparate methodological approaches. These include musical semiotics, Critical Theory, embodied phenomenology, and psychoanalytic theory.

The famous theory of the “anxiety of influence” (Harold Bloom) seems to be insufficient to explain the admiration and reverence for Bach which highly different composers such as Mahler and Reger, Schoenberg and Shostakovich, and Webern and Schnittke have expressed through their work. Despite all their differences and possible anxieties, each of these composers consciously and specifically chose Bach as his desired partner in an imaginary dialogue with the past. At the same time, the image of Bach that each composer created was very different, as is typical in interpreting the abstract drawings of a Rorschach test; therefore, each ‘portrait’ of Bach was also, in a way, a self-reflection of the composer. The main question to be investigated in this article is the reason(s) for the unique persistence of Bach’s influence into the 20th century, incomparable even to that of other major composers of the past. Several crucial points connected with this Bach-renaissance will be examined in an attempt to understand why.

Existen conciertos de compositores, existen conciertos de obras y existen también conciertos de intérpretes. El concierto de hoy es difícilmente clasificable por ser, de forma maravillosa, mágica, una mezcla de todos ellos. En primer plano, tenemos una intérprete de esas que, por sí misma, ya despierta una clase de interés claudicado bajo ideas del tipo “no quisiera perdérmelo por nada del mundo”. Además, los nombres que llenan el programa (Bach, Shostakovich, Schnittke, Brahms), llenan por la sinergia de su arte páginas y páginas de reflexión, a más de horas y horas de música y belleza. De las mejores flores de sus respectivos huertos creativos, brota todo eso que convierte a nuestro concierto, también, en un auténtico concierto de obras.
Compositores, obras e intérprete, pues, unidos por un ideal constructivo que vertebra cual hilo rojo todo el programa: la veneración de la forma como constituidora, no sólo portadora, de contenido. Así, Bach, así Brahms, pero así también, por supuesto, Shostakovich y Schnittke. A ello se le suma un respeto, no servil, en todos ellos por las respectivas tradiciones que, en el programa, abarcan desde el Barroco pletórico de Bach a la casi contemporaneidad de Schnittke. Es decir, una paleta amplia de gamas de color, ora solemne, ora sentimental, ora dramática, que vehicula lo que, a fin de cuentas, consciente o inconscientemente, uno siempre espera cuando asiste a una sala de conciertos: tener un encuentro –pues sólo del encuentro nace la experiencia– con el arte, con la trascendencia, con la música.

[ITA] Il saggio indaga sui caratteri stilistici di alcune composizioni di musicisti del secolo appena trascorso (Stravinskij, Ligeti, Schnittke, Nono e Berio), mettendole in relazione con la tradizione al fine di evidenziare il processo continuo di rimandi, acquisizioni e, nel contempo, voluta lontananza dai modelli in direzione di un rapporto creativo e positivo con il passato.
[ENG] The essay explores the stylistic features of some compositions by composers of the past century (Stravinskij, Ligeti, Schnittke, Nono and Berio), investigating their relationship with tradition. The purpose is to underline the constant process of references, acquisitions, and, at the same time, intentional detachment from the traditional models towards a creative and positive relationship with the past.

Το παρόν κείμενο συνιστά μια υβριδική μορφή μεταξύ άρθρου και κριτικού αναστοχασμού, πραγματευόμενο ζητήματα ιστορίας, ιδεολογικών ζητημάτων και ερμηνείας, ορμώμενο από την παρουσίαση του Κοντσέρτου για Χορωδία του Άλφρεντ Σνίτκε υπό τη διεύθυνση του Θ. Κουρετζή. Αρχικά, παρέχονται πληροφορίες για το Κοντσέρτο για Χορωδία με ταυτόχρονη τοποθέτησή του στο συγκείμενο των πολυτάραχων μουσικών, θρησκευτικών, πνευματικών και υπαρξιακών αναζητήσεων του συνθέτη όπως αποτυπώνονται στη δημιουργική του εξέλιξη, καθώς και άλλων σοβιετικών καλλιτεχνών της εποχής του. Η δομή της συναυλίας του Κουρετζή παραλληλίζεται με την παραπάνω πορεία από ‘το ανόμοιο προς τη συμφιλιωτική υπέρβαση’, συνιστώντας σχεδόν μικρογραφία των αγωνιών του Σνίτκε. Φράση κλειδί για αυτή την προσέγγιση αποτελεί το «Γενικό δια της διαφοράς»: Έκφραση που χρησιμοποιεί ο συνθέτης στην 4η συμφωνία του, η οποία ανήκε στην ίδια περίοδο με το εν λόγω έργο, ενσωματώνοντας στη δομική της οργάνωση μια αλληλουχία θρησκευτικών αναζητήσεων. Παρακάτω, εστιάζουμε στην ερμηνευτική διαδρομή της συναυλίας, που διερευνούμε εποπτικά μέσα από την πραγμάτευση των προειρημένων αλλά και μέσα από την τοποθέτησή της σε ένα ευρύτερο πεδίο σύγχρονων μορφών τέχνης, όπως παραστασιακές (performative) πρακτικές, θεατρικές τεχνικές, εκδοχές φωνητικών εκφορών και παραδόσεων κλπ. Τέλος, αυτά συμβάλλουν στην αποτίμηση των μυσταγωγικών στοιχείων του ερμηνευτικού πονήματος του Κουρετζή, καταλήγοντας σε σχολιασμό και δυνάμει προτάσεις.
