An order-of-battle of the German Assault Division 'Rhodes' (motorised) on the island of Rhodes, Greece, two weeks before its units disarmed the Italian garisson in the middle of September during the Italian Armistice. The Germans would remain in Rhodes until the end of the war, May 1945, because the Allies bypassed them, when the Germans evacuated some islands and all of mainland Greece in October 1944. Hungary joined as the first nation to the Japan, Germany and Italy formed Tripartite Pact in November 1940. The Axis ally evolved during military operations. First, during the attack on Yugoslavia in April 1941, and then during the attack against the Soviet Union from June 1941. Hungary joined to the attack against the Soviet Union after the bombardment on Kassa. The Hungarian government declared that bombardment was committed by Soviet airplanes. The attack of the Royal Hungarian Army conducted by the Carpathian Group included VIIIth corps from Kassa, and the most modern Ist Mobile Corps. The tasks of the Group were in the first period, until 9th of July 1941 to track the Russian troops withdrawn from the Hungarian border and to take in hand the crossing points on the river Dniester.
The Ist Mobile Corps detached from the Carpathian Group on 9th of July and subordinated by the German Army Group South. The Carpathian Group itself left under Hungarian command. The tasks of the Group were: set up the military administration, restart the economy, and peace-making in the hinterland. The additional tasks of the German subordinated Mobile Corps were: supply to reach Opera-tion Barbarossa’s aims on East and cut the withdrawal of the Soviet Armies and help to sur-round them. The Carpathian Group and the 1st Mobile Corps were relieved in October-November of 1941, during the attack against Moscow (aka Operation Typhoon).

Buddhist encounters: A touch of Zen in Thai Buddhism - Modernity has forced Thai Buddhism into rethinking its apologetics regarding first cosmology and rebirth, and then social and political engagement. This has usually been done by going back to the Theravāda tradition, but has failed whenever the renewal claimed to be achieved through setting up a sectarian and exclusive group. Buddhadasa Bhikkhu (1906-1992) has suggested a modernist apologetic renewal inspired by Zen which called into question traditional Theravāda Buddhist beliefs and practices without attempting to create a new sectarian group. He has been criticised either in the name of Theravāda orthodoxy or because he has been allegedly ineffective. The complexity of encounters between the different Buddhist traditions should lead historians to evaluate the past with the greatest caution.

A series of, well known, photos of the German 737. schwere Artillerie-Abteilung, most probably, supporting the Leibstadarte-SS Adolf Hiltler units in trying to force the British, Australian and Dodecanese Greek forces out of their positions from the Kleidi/Klidi/Vevi Pass during the German invasion of Greece in April 1941.

The focus of this paper will be on the preconditions for and causes of the engagement in conflict of the left wing Greek Popular Liberation Army (ELAS) with other armed groups, chiefly those of the right wing Panhellenic Liberation Organisation (PAO). It is less concerned with battles and strategy, or questions such as the atrocities committed by both sides. There are three avenues of investigation. The first is to trace, in the political tendencies that were formed before the war, the reasons why the various communities in the area sided with ELAS or PAO, and to discover whether these tendencies still existed during the occupation (Katochi) by the Axis forces, since it seems that the different origins of the various communities (e.g. natives, Sarakatsani, grecophone or turkophone refugees) had a decisive influence on their political choice. The second is to estimate the extent to which the political choice of these communities was influenced by the tactics followed by the rival organisations during the Katochi, especially in 1943. Finally, further apparently significant factors will be examined, such as the Bulgarian and German reprisals of 1941, which followed the first armed resistance activities in the area, and the expansion of the Bulgarian occupied zone in Central Macedonia in July 1943.

Nous attendons d’un livre qu’il nous mette en garde contre les dangers diététiques du bifteck, qu’il revienne sur l’histoire du scoubidou et qu’il évoque les raffinements de la dentelle. Les derniers romans de Céline, soit D’un château l’autre, Nord et Rigodon, font tout cela. Mais leur interrogation première concerne l’amnésie de la société française d’après-guerre. Comment une nation réécrit-elle le passé en fonction des intérêts du présent ? Et comment un « salaud » aurait-il des choses intéressantes à dire sur la mémoire d’un peuple ? Sans chercher à condamner ni à réhabiliter l’auteur, cet essai se veut une interrogation sur les symboles, les motifs et les usages de l’amnésie collective telle qu’elle est mise en scène dans les derniers romans de Céline. Ceux-ci racontent une version illégitime de la Seconde Guerre mondiale au prisme de genres désuets, d’intertextes issus du patrimoine littéraire, d’archaïsmes linguistiques et d’allusions historiques. Ces lignées littéraires perdues sont réactualisées par l’écriture afin de révéler les trous de mémoire collectifs.
Ce livre propose une lecture originale des derniers textes romanesques de Céline. Il examine leur inventivité linguistique, leur humour, leur étrangeté, parfois, et surtout leur portée critique à l’égard des représentations de la mémoire d’une société qui veut oublier la guerre qui vient de s’achever, tout en en gardant à jamais le souvenir.
