In 1936 Lino Guedes, by then a long-time militant in the black press in São Paulo, published Vigília de Pai João, a drama about slaves who dance, sing, converse, and reminisce on the eve of their planned escape from the plantation. Although Lino Guedes was largely dismissed as a moralistic and overly sentimental poet by the black writers who came after him, Vigília de Pai João, based on seemingly old-fashioned models such as Romantic and Parnassian abolitionist poetry, contradicts such harsh assessments. The play rereads in innovative ways some of the abolitionist motifs and deals creatively with the tensions between black popular culture and middle-class catholic values and nationalism and African identity.

"In the article the main aspects of emergence and formation of the entertaining journalism in Ukraine of the 1920s are considered on the example of the illustrated "UZh" ("Universal Magazine") that was issued in Kharkiv (1928–1929). It is found out that hedonist, or entertaining, press was torn between formal experiment, entertaining as such and ideology while also endowed with powerful ludic potential, the complex system of connections between text and image, disposition to active exchange with "high culture" and fiction.

У статті розглянуто основні аспекти зародження та становлення розважальної журналістики в Україні 20-х рр. ХХ ст. на прикладі багатоілюстрованого журналу "УЖ" (Харків, 1928–1929). Встановлено, що преса гедоністичного спрямування визначалась розірваністю між формальним експериментом, розважальністю та ідеологією, потужним ігровим потенціалом, складною системою зв'язків між текстом і зображенням, налаштованістю на активний обмін з "високою культурою" і белетристикою.

У статті розглянуто проблеми форми та жанрової структури ілюстрованих видань, що виходили наприкінці 20-х – на поч. 30-х рр. ХХ ст. в Німеччині та радянській Україні. Особливу увагу звернуто на морфологію як чинник та індикатор ідеологічної ситуації доби. Підкреслено як подібні риси українських та німецьких часописів (жанрову структуру, гетерономію тексту та зображення), так і їхні відмінності (більш і менш регулярна архітектоніка, різний рівень стандартизації, практика пародіювання стандарту).

The article considers the problems of form and genre structure in the illustrated magazines published in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Germany and Soviet Ukraine. The attention is focused on morphology as a factor and indicator of the ideological situation of the time. The emphasis rests upon both similarities (genre structure, the heteronomy of text and picture) and differences (more vs. less regular architectonics, different levels of standardization, practices of parodying the standard).

Depending on the international and domestic politics the relationship between Turkey and Greece had changed from time to time. Pioneering by Atatürk and Venizelos, in the wake of strained decades of hostility, two countries enhanced their relations in the 1930's. After severe political and military conflicts however, how could two leaders cultivate such a difficult friendship? Within this context, explanations through leadership theories can broaden our understanding of what actually happened. For this reason, first we shall concisely mention various theories on leadership, and this will be followed by our application of these theories on Atatürk and Venizelos-as well as Turkish and Greek state cadres and publics.

"The essay concerns the cycle of stories by Ukrainian writer Mike Johansen (1920-ies) by the view of structural analysis. The main issues are providing compositional cohesion in the texts and between them, structurally significant devices of style and narrative, Johansen's metaphors of travel and verbalization-as-death.

У статті з погляду структурного аналізу розглянуто цикл оповідань українського письменника 20-х років Майка Йогансена. В центрі уваги — забезпечення композиційних зв'язків у текстах та між ними, структурно вагомі стилістичні та наративні прийоми, Йогансенові метафори подорожі та вербалізації-як-смерті.
