Contemporary academic arguments still have the tendency to define the debate between religion and secularity as a dualism between two radically different anthropological or ontological postures toward reality. We can find an example of this approach in Charles Taylor’s work A Secular Age, where the debate between religion and secularity is presented as a conflict between belief and unbelief, or transcendence against immanence. We can also see a similar presentation of the problem in Fukuyama’s The End of History, where religion is presented as a more primitive, overcome, stage of humanity, that function as a step in something like a Universal History of humanity in the direction of liberal democracies. Alternatively, we can see something akin Vattimo’s hermenutic interpretation, like La Fine della Modernità or Credere di Credere, where we can see an interpretation of religion as the affirmation of metaphysics, which is violent in nature. Even in the case in which we should recover r...

Some forms of "religion" lasted in the human world for thousands of years when no script was available. Religion as such does not need necessarily the support of writing. It has at first another tool for communication and transmission of its cultic and theoretical contents, namely the figurative image, in carved or painted representation, as we see now in the highly interesting Neolithic sites of southeastern Anatolia. Here figures constituted themselves a sort of document, through which people could become enlightened about the most important beliefs of their communitarian culture. Moreover, every religion, and above all the primitive ones, has something hidden in itself, something secret that is too complex to be explained entirely by a normal speech, and a fortiori by a written account. The earliest writing systems appeared toward the end of the fourth millennium and began in the following three millennia to be largely used within old Mediterranean and Near-eastern civilizations. Religious literature is characterized by an extreme plurality of perspectives outlining differently the basic questions (the origin of the world, the hierarchy and the functions of the gods), because each text reflects the local tradition of a major place of worship, of its priestly class, and its residing population. The paper deals with Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek, Jewish, Christian, Islamic religious literature.
Utilizzando quali segni? Piegandoli a quali necessità comunicative?
