RETINAL DETACHMENT SURGERY IN A PEDIATRIC POPULATION: Visual and Anatomic Outcomes2017 •
Pediatric retinal detachments (RDs) are unique in etiology, anatomy, and prognosis compared with the adult population. The mechanisms of pediatric RD include tractional (TRD), rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, traumatic, and other types, such as exudative or hemorrhagic. This study examined visual and anatomical outcomes of pediatric RD undergoing surgical repair at a single university referral center. A retrospective consecutive case series of patients clinically diagnosed and undergoing surgery for RD between birth and 15 years of age from 2002 to 2013 at a single academic institution. A total of 206 patients (231 eyes) were included in this study, of which 25 (12%) had bilateral RD. Of those patients, 67 (29%) had TRD (retinopathy of prematurity, persistent fetal vasculature, or familial exudative vitreoretinopathy), 51 (22%) had rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (myopia, X-linked retinoschisis, or Stickler syndrome), 60 (26%) had traumatic RD, and 53 (23%) were due to other typ...

Characteristics and outcomes of pediatric retinal detachment surgery at a tertiary referral center2014 •
To report the clinical features, and anatomic and visual outcomes of pediatric retinal detachment (RD) surgery at a tertiary referral center in Southern Iran. In this retrospective, non-comparative, interventional case series, we reviewed the records of 77 patients less than 18 years of age who had undergone primary RD surgery at Khalili Hospital, Shiraz, Iran from 2005 to 2010. All patients had follow-up duration more than 12 months. Seventy-seven eyes of 77 patients with mean age of 12.5±5 (range, 2-18) years including 56 (73%) male subjects were included. The most common etiologies of RD included trauma (90%) and myopia (6%). Different types of breaks and proliferative viteroretinopathy were present in 75% and 13% of eyes, respectively. The most common primary surgery was deep viterectomy (78%) followed by scleral buckling (19.5%). Single-operation reattachment was accomplished in 55% of cases. At final follow up, functional visual loss [best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) <5/...

Pars Plana Vitrectomy in Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment in Paediatric Patients in Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Indonesia 20172021 •
In the past decades, indications for PPV in paediatric patients has been rising with large heterogeneity outcomes among studies. Our objective is to present a pilot descriptive study in Indonesia, regarding pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) success rate in paediatric patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) in Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (CMH). A retrospective study was conducted on 16 paediatric eyes diagnosed for RRD and treated in CMH during the period of January 2017 to December 2017. A total of 16 RRD eyes were identified in 15 individuals. Majority of the patients were male and were in the age group of 12-18 years. There were 13 patients undergone PPV with or without SB. Functional anatomical success rate was determined from the macula status while functional success rate on final BCVA. Among 16 patients, 14 had constant or increased final BCVA and 11 had reattached macula. The success rate of PPV in terms of anatomical outcome was 11 out of 16 eyes and in functiona...

Kūkai’s Heritage: The Images of Fugen Enmei Bosatsu in Shingon Context2024 •
In my previous publications, I have proposed that the presence of two distinct iconographies depicting Fugen Enmei Bosatsu 普賢延命菩薩 indicates variations in the rituals, particularly in their platforms, between the two Japanese esoteric traditions: Taimitsu (Tendai) and Tōmitsu (Shingon). These rituals, however, emerged as later developments, formulated by Japanese monks in the 11th century, with disparities originating from the preceding transmission of images. Therefore, to understand these iconographies’ origins, we need to examine the images brought to Japan by significant Japanese Buddhist monks during the 9th century. I have previously analyzed the Taimitsu type of the two iconographies. The other type features a twenty-armed bodhisattva image, typically seated on a lotus throne supported by three or four elephants. In Japanese Buddhist sources, it is commonly referred to as “Vajrabodhi’s oral tradition” (Kongōchi kuketsu 金剛智口決[訣]). In this paper, I first introduce this oral tradition proposing some potential textual explanations for the basis of twenty arms. Then I investigate the Shingon context of the transmission of the twenty-armed image. For this examination, I draw from various Chinese Buddhist and Japanese Shingon written sources, as well as depictions spanning the 8th through the 13th centuries.
