2004, OECD Observer
In an age obsessed with economic efficiency and tax cuts, it is ironic that by allowing health systems in developing countries to deteriorate, the industrialised world is engaged in one of the most dangerous experiments in false economy in history.

The financialisation of global health2018 •
Global health is increasingly reliant on financial markets. The ongoing financialisation of global health raises new questions of governance, which we expect to affect policy makers as much as doctors, nurses and patients in the years to come. In this editorial, we will first explain what is meant by financialisation, then illustrate its nature in the field of global health three via examples, and end by highlighting some of the governance issues that the financialisation of global health raises.

Health economics in low income countries: adapting to the reality of the unofficial economy2001 •
2008 •
This report offers a new strategy for investing in health for econom- ic development, especially in the world’s poorest countries, based upon a new global partnership of the developing and developed countries. Timely and bold action could save at least 8 million lives each year by the end of this decade, extending the life spans, productivity and economic well- being of the poor. Such an effort would require two important initiatives: a significant scaling up of the resources currently spent in the health sec- tor by poor countries and donors alike; and tackling the non-financial obstacles that have limited the capacity of poor countries to deliver health services. We believe that the additional investments in health—requiring of donors roughly one-tenth of one percent of their national income— would be repaid many times over in millions of lives saved each year, enhanced economic development, and strengthened global security. Indeed, without such a concerted effort, the world’s commitments to improving the lives of the poor embodied in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) cannot be met.

Health equity in a globalised world: toward constraining global greed?2013 •
‘Corporate greed' has recently been denounced in several protest demonstrations in different parts of the world. In those demonstrations corporations are called to put an end to their being too selfish and greedy for profit and to start caring for the interests of others, especially the many who are poor and unemployed. While such protest movements seem to attract less support in Asian countries than in their Western counterparts this does not mean that people there are necessarily indifferent to denouncing ‘greed'. There is even a familiar quote attributed to Lao Tzu that says that there is no greater disaster than greed (or lavish desires). This may be a different kind of greed than what global protesters are denouncing. But even if people have different conceptions of what should be considered greed and how to denounce it, we could at least agree that we should not only be concerned about our own interests. In certain ways it may also be beneficial for us to consider how others are faring.
Health economics, as an interdisciplinary science, has experienced exceptionally bold evolution through the past eight decades. Generations of committed scholars have built up huge body of knowledge and developed a set of methodological tools to assist health-care authorities with resource allocation process. Following its conception at the US National Bureau of Economic Research and Ivy League US Universities, this science has spread across the Globe. It has adapted to a myriad of local conditions and needs of the national health systems with diverse historical legacies, medical services provision , and financing patterns. Challenge of financial sustainability facing modern day health systems remains primarily attributable to population aging, prosperity diseases, large scale migrations, rapid urbanization, and technological innovation in medicine. Despite promising developments in developing countries with emerging BRICS markets on the lead, rising out-of-pocket health spending continues to threaten affordability of medical care. Universal health coverage extension will likely remain serious challenge even for some of the most advanced OECD nations. These complex circumstances create strong drivers for inevitable further development of health economics. We believe that this interdisciplinary health science shall leave long-lasting blue print to be visible for decades to come.
