Summary Report A report on the state of the Historic Environment for the Solent LEP area is being prepared by Professor David Gill. The report is based on the analysis of data derived from the RSA Heritage Index (2020). It presents the heritage rankings for local authorities in the Solent area, and then explores the main themes of the Index: Historic Built Environment; Museums, Archives and Artefacts; Industrial Heritage; Parks and Open Spaces; Landscapes and Natural Heritage; Culture and Memories. There are additional sections on Participation in Heritage, National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) Grants, and Heritage and the Tourism Economy. Links to open source data will be provided. Gosport is ranked at 5 out of 316 local authorities in England, and Havant at 15. Three other areas are in the top 100: Portsmouth (22), New Forest (51), and the Isle of Wight (57). Historic Built Environment: three authorities in the region were placed in the top 100 for England: Gosport (18), Portsmouth (96), and Southampton (97). Museums, Archives and Artefacts: four authorities in the region are placed in the top 100 for England: Portsmouth (17), Gosport (21), Southampton (43) and Isle of Wight (67). Industrial Heritage: seven authorities in the region are placed in the top 100 for England: Gosport (2), Portsmouth (3), Havant (14), Southampton (17), Fareham (46), the Isle of Wight (56) and Eastleigh (77). Parks and Open Spaces: four authorities in the region are placed in the top 100 for England: Gosport (8), Eastleigh (32), Havant (81) and Southampton (98). Landscapes and Natural Heritage: three authorities in the region are placed in the top 10 for England, with three more in the top 100: Havant (1), New Forest (6), Portsmouth (9), Gosport (37), the Isle of Wight (47), and Fareham (53). Culture and Memories: only one authority in the region is placed in the top 100 for England: Gosport (73). Participation rates by the public in the region: Historic Built Environment: Gosport (80%), New Forest (81%), and Fareham (84%) Museums: Fareham (63%) Archives: Gosport (8%), and Southampton (9%) Industrial Heritage: Fareham (38%) Historic Parks and Gardens: Fareham (53%) 73 events took place in Gosport for Heritage Open Days in 2019. Portsmouth received £19.6 million worth of National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) grants between 2013 and 2019: the region received £44.1 million in the same period.
