The Ligurian migration phenomenon: the "internal" case of Genoa, from the Unification of Italy to the early Twentieth Century2021 •
The paper aims to focus on the Ligurian migration phenomenon between 1800s and 1900s, analyzed from a geographical point of view and from a historical and anthropological point of view. Specifically, by examining first the 1800 Ligurian migration, we will highlight the tendency, inherent in the Ligurian inhabitants, with a planetary projection of economic activities that led to a substantial flow of capital to Genoa, which, however, throughout the first half of the Nineteenth Century was exclusively controlled by the aristocracy who held economic and political monopoly without manifesting any ability to renewal. In the second part we proceed to identify the "focus" that led to the economic and social transformations, which determined the big change of Genoa: thanks to the Italian scientist's congress, held in this city in 1946, banks, scientific manufacturing and trade companies that led gradually to investments in naval, engineering and building sectors began to thrive. In little more than two decades the city became a major industrial centre and the aristocracy is supplanted by a more enterprising bourgeoisie, able to determine a change in the physiognomy of the city. This fact is particularly interesting for the purpose of the work: in fact we want to show how the economic and historical turning point was the cause of a migratory movement that sees Genoa as a centre of internal migration that leads the city and Liguria to double its population in 150 years. Migrations that sees immigrants arriving from all over Italy, and that has no obstacles in its path, because Genoa welcomes them with a high degree of integration without segregate them in neighborhoods without fostering ethnic-religious conflicts. Genoa, therefore, has become during its industrial development not only the starting point for migrants to the Americas but also the centre of internal migration that helped to determine the new face of the city.

Genoa: Colonizing and Colonized City? The Port City as a Pole of Attraction for Foreign Merchants (16th-18th Centuries)2019 •
Port cities were by nature a pole of attraction for merchants and businessmen looking for opportunities to make money. At the same time, the origin and number of foreign merchants settling permanently in a port city tended to vary over time, as well as their positioning in the market and the density of ties with local traders. To investigate this topic it is necessary to take due account of the economic, political, and social motivations, which might have either positively or negatively affected these processes. As Michel Balard pointed out with reference to the late Middle Ages and to the relations between Genoa and overseas cities, “Genoa, a colonizer in the East, is colonized by the Orientals”. The aim of this work is to verify whether and to what extent this concept is applicable also to the modern age and whether it involved a wider geographic area than the one examined by this French historian. In particular we outline the features of the presence of foreign merchants in Genoa between the 16th and 18th centuries as a phenomenon complementary to the better known “diaspora” of Genoese businessmen.

Each port is confronted with different operational problems, posed by its harbour, traffic features, economic policies established by the government with jurisdiction over the port, or by other structural factors that are likely to change with time. The port of Genoa – examined here from the beginning of the 16th century to the years immediately following the fall of the Republic and the advent of the Savoy rule – is the perfect case in point. In this new phase of its history, Genoa regained the leading role it had previously lost, although it had always been one of the wealthiest cities in Europe. The port, whose facilities had been revamped in the late Middle Ages, became the centre of a wider economic system capable of efficiently handling increasing traffic volumes. This work aims to examine the organisation of the port of Genoa, with particular focus on its workforce, identifying any relevant rearrangements that had to be made over time in order to cope with concurrent traffic increase and changes.
