Surfshark VPN Review 2021
A VPN is a great solution whether you’re trying to improve your privacy, access
geo-blocked content, blocked sites, or just maintain a stable internet connection speed.
But choosing the best VPN in 2021 might make your head spin because there’s a lot of
options out there and most of them have similar features. So, ultimately it will come
down to the price, and Surfshark is one of the cheapest VPNs out there.
But is it a good value for money? Let’s find out.

Surfshark Servers and Locations
Surfshark VPN has 3200 servers in 65 countries. This number is continuously growing.
65 countries might feel small, but Surfshark covers most of the popular locations. So,
it’s most likely that the countries you’re interested in will be on the list.
Surfshark has multiple servers on each location, so you actually get a better service
quality. All servers are P2P-friendly, so you rarely face any connection lags or reduced
speed.
Device Connectivity
This is where Surfshark really stands out. It has unlimited device support unlike most
of the popular VPNs in the market. You can use the Surfshark VPN on as many devices
as you want with just one account. It’s basically buy once and use it anywhere.
Most VPN providers have a device limitation for each account. It’s usually there to
ensure that users don’t share their accounts with others. These are legitimate fears for
providers, as they can lose a lot of sales because of it. However, this fear doesn’t seem
to concern Surfshark. They are happy to provide unlimited device support with each
account.
We’ve tried to find if there’s any catch to it because unlimited device support does feel
too good to be true. But honestly, there isn’t anything more to it. You can connect
Surfshark with unlimited devices using a single account, without any extra fees, or any
changes to the server settings.
Unblocking Streaming Contents
Let’s be honest, most of us only use a VPN for streaming content that’s otherwise not
available in our region. Geo-restrictions are kind of annoying. Why are the Netflix
contents so much different in Europe and America, when the users are basically paying
the same fee. That’s a debate for another day, but a VPN helps us to bypass this
annoying feature.
So, we tested Surfshark to access popular streaming platforms from different locations
and worked perfectly. We accessed Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, and HBO Max from five
different locations (UK/US/Canada/Singapore/New Zealand). There was no lag and no
streaming or log-in delay.
Surprisingly, Surfshark even managed to bypass the notoriously powerful geo-block of
Amazon Prime in all of the five regions we tested.
Using Shurfshark for Gaming:
Using a VPN for online multiplayer gaming is very popular these days, especially
because of the growing demand for eSports. Gamers want to have the best possible
experience when playing online. So, using a VPN is a great way to reduce those lags
and latency issues.
We tried playing PUBG and Valorant on pc with Surfshark, from 3 different locations
and multiple servers. Even though the ping was higher, it didn’t reflect on the gaming
experience at all. Most of the time, the gaming experience was smooth, there were no
sudden drops in the connection speed, no latency or freezing, and no connectivity
issues. So, a big tickmark for gaming.
Connection Speed:
The biggest concern about using a VPN is “Will my internet speed become slower if I
use a VPN?” It’s a logical concern because you’re actually connecting to a server that is
physically located very far from you.
To test this, we ran different speed tests while connected to different locations on
Surshark, and then we compared it to our original connection speed without the VPN.
The difference was marginal and barely noticeable.
While originally we were getting 42 Mbps speed, with Surfshark we averaged around
40-41 Mbps. However when continuous browsing for a longer period, the connection
speed was much stable with Surfshark. There was no bandwidth throttling and
streaming dealy on any of the locations and servers tested.
Accessing and Downloading Torrents
Torrent sites are blocked in most western countries, and VPNs are basically the only
solution if you want to access and download files using torrents. However, this is one
area where Surfshark falls short.
We found that most torrent speeds were bad while using Surfshark, even for the
torrent with higher seeds. Although all of its servers are P2P-friendly, their
performance with torrents is particularly bad.
Where can you use Surfshark?
Surfshark has a wide coverage of operating systems and devices. It works on every
major OS such as Windows, Android, Mac, IOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, and
Linux. Connecting to Surfshark is pretty easy on these platforms. You just download
the app and connect. If you’re using Chrome or Firefox, you can also use it as a browser
extension.
It’s also very easy to use Surfshark with your gaming consoles such as the PS4 or
Xbox. You can either configure Surfshark on your router or run it on your pc and share a
virtual hotspot.
Surfshark Customer Support
Using Surfshark is very simple and easy, so you’re unlikely to face any issues. But if you
do, they have a 24/7 customer support team always ready to help the users. You can
just navigate to the help tab on the Surfshark app or browser extension, and it will
redirect you to their website. You can then hop onto their LiveChat, and directly talk to
a customer support agent.
Best Features of Surfshark
In addition to the general VPN features, Surfshark also has some unique additional
features that will make your internet browsing experience much smoother.
-
Whitelister: You might not need or want a VPN while accessing every single
site. Surfshark has a feature called ‘Whitelister’ that allows you to add some
URLs to a list and access them directly without the VPN. So, whenever you visit
those sites, Surfshark is automatically turned off in the background.
-
No Border Mode: If you’re in a location such as China where internet usage is
highly restrictive and censored, then the regular VPN features might not be
enough for you. The No Border Mode feature allows you the bypass such high
levels of restrictions. When you turn this feature on, Surfshark automatically
scans and connects you to the servers that perform best under high network
restrictions.
-
CleanWeb: It’s an amazing security feature of Surfshark that blocks annoying
ads and trackers, and also prevents malware from getting into your system.
