We argue that while our field has made great progress in determining what to teach and how to teach it in negotiation, there has been a surprising reluctance to make the move from “mass production” to “mass customization” that so many other industries have successfully adopted. “The Who” of our training has so far been addressed seriously, they surmise, by only an elite subgroup of trainers. This article analyzes recommendations in the Rethinking Negotiation Teaching (RNT) series. Instructors teaching negotiation and other dispute resolution subjects have long had a hard time trying to cover everything they would like in their courses. The RNT project has documented (and, to some extent, stimulated) a growing profusion of ideas and techniques for teaching negotiation, which has multiplied instructors’ dilemmas in designing their courses. Since instructors cannot teach everything they would like, this article suggests some general principles for making decisions about what to include and how to conduct these courses. Clearly, there is no single right or best way to teach negotiation, so instructors should select approaches based on the particular audiences, settings, and goals of the instruction. Experiential learning theory provides the conceptual underpinnings for effective pedagogical techniques, such as simulations and games, to teach about negotiation processes. Learning theory also may offer a useful framework to integrate many negotiation process concepts using a common paradigm. Bill Zartman's use of role- playing games and his many contributions to the negotiation field are applied to illustrate the value of learning theory as an integrative framework.
