MONTEIRO, George, "Imaginary poets in a real world (an unpublished lecture, 1996)" (2016). Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, No. 9, Spring, pp. 298-309. Brown Digital Repository. Brown University. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0SJ1HSM Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 9 A (im)possível unidade em Fernando Pessoa [The (im)possible unity in Fernando Pessoa] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0SJ1HSM ABSTRACT Delivered on Feb. 8, 1996, at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island, this lecture was scheduled in conjunction with a Portuguese-government sponsored exhibition titled "Azulejo: Five Centuries of Portuguese Ceramic Tile." It served as an introduction for a general audience of non-specialists interested in learning about Fernando Pessoa's life and work. It surveys the basic facts of the poet's life: as a young student in English-language schools; his life in Lisbon; his theories and practices of heteronymism, including his account of the advent of those major heteronyms and their poems on March 8, 1914; his unsuccessful attempts to be recognized as a poet in the English tradition by having English-language poems printed in Lisbon but circulated only in the British isles. His peculiar triumph was that of a writer who, because he was bi-lingual and bi-cultural, was able to become a great Portuguese poet. As one critic, who is himself fluent in the English language and conversant with England's literary traditions, has put it, "[Pessoa] even \u2018reinvented' the Portuguese language, because he knew English." Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer Edited by Patricio Ferrari and Jerónimo Pizarro A collection of scholarly essays dedicated to Fernando Pessoa as English reader and writer including unpublished material from the author’s archive and private library With Pessoa’s digitized private library online, the importance of English to Pessoa has become indisputable, particularly in his formative years: numerous English authors served as the bedrock from which his poetic sensibility emerged, developed and soared. In fact, a significant amount of Pessoa’s writings in English and in Portuguese (including those attributed to his heteronyms and/or to other literary personae) were greatly informed by these (his) original sources. Fernando Pessoa as English Reader and Writer provides ample evidence of his fruitful, lifelong relationship with the English language. In addition to its thematic focus, this latest volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies features sections dedicated to unpublished materials, new transcriptions of texts Pessoa originally wrote in English and verse translations by Pessoa into Portuguese. Contributors to this volume include George Monteiro, Patricia Silva McNeill, Richard Zenith, and Stefan Helgesson.

MONTEIRO, George, "Twenty-two New Translations: English renditions of Pessoa's heteronymous Portuguese poems" (2015). Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, No. 8, Fall, pp. 602-648. Brown Digital Repository. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z06H4FNH Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 8 Twenty-two New Translations: English renditions of Pessoa’s heteronymous Portuguese poems [Vinte e Duas Novas Traduções: versões inglesas de poemas heteronímicos portugueses de Pessoa] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z06H4FNH ABSTRACT Here we present twenty-two Pessoan poems rendered in English by George Monteiro. These poems are attributed to three heteronyms of Fernando Pessoa: two numbered texts from O Guardador de Rebanhos (The Keeper of Sheep) of Alberto Caeiro; ten loose poems and a cycle of five sonnets by Álvaro de Campos; and five odes of Ricardo Reis. Each translation contains three elements, respectively: the English recreation by Monteiro; the facsimile of the Portuguese original by Fernando Pessoa (or of the last Portuguese version, if there exist more than one Pessoan document concerning the poem); and a transcription of the Portuguese text, in the case of a manuscript (solely notes in the case of a legible typescript prepared by Pessoa). CEARNS, Jennifer, "The Ventriloquist Behind the Shattered Mirror: A Study of Pessoa's Bilingual Oeuvre" (2014). Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, No. 6, Fall, pp. 78-103. Brown Digital Repository. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0TQ601G Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 6 The Ventriloquist Behind the Shattered Mirror: A Study of Pessoa’s Bilingual Oeuvre [O Ventriloco detrás do Espelho Partido: estudo sobre a poesia bilingue de Pessoa] https://doi.org/10.7301/Z0TQ601G ABSTRACT Amidst a vast body of literature focussing on Pessoa's Portuguese-language work, until recently comparatively little attention has been paid to his work in other languages, specifically, English. In this essay I argue that Pessoa's bilingualism becomes a fundamental method of self-dilution in his deconstruction of self. In English in particular, a strong presence of other influential voices resonate in Pessoa's language, further reinforcing this process. This ventriloquism leads to a true cacophony of voices in his English work, fulfilling the objectives he sets out for himself in Portuguese. I critique Bloom's conclusion that this made Pessoa's poetry 'weaker'; indeed, in this light his English work asserts itself rather more convincingly than previously considered. Ultimately Pessoa's project(s) of 'deselving' can only be comprehensively appreciated through the careful consideration of all of his work, across voices, heteronyms and languages. The essays that follow derive from these two events. The first one was held at the Fernando Pessoa House in Lisbon on 3 July 2014 and the second on 17 and 18 April 2015 at Brown University. Major sponsorship for this event came from the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies. «Among the many things they cover, the essays gathered in this important and highly original volume, sometimes individually but certainly cumulatively, make the case for taking seriously Fernando Pessoa’s large body of poetry written in English. Moreover, they suggest, if only by implication, that Pessoa deserves a place in the long and distinguished traditions of English poetry. Few if any have hitherto had the courage to make the claim for his inclusion in the illustrious group of English poets» [George Monteiro]. Brown University Library. https://doi.org/10.26300/8m5c-mc36 Is Part of: Pessoa Plural―A Journal of Fernando Pessoa Studies, Issue 2 Amândio Reis Pessoa and personification: The early stories in English [Pessoa e personificação: As primeiras histórias em inglês] https://doi.org/10.26300/8m5c-mc36 ABSTRACT This essay focuses on four short stories written in English by Fernando Pessoa in a two-year period (1906-1907), between his definite return to Portugal from South Africa and his reacquisition of Portuguese as a language of literary writing. It argues that personification, or prosopopoeia, is the central figure of Pessoa’s lesser-known fantastic fiction, whereby he explores the metaphorical possibilities of prose while also developing his signature metafictional register. By analyzing the four stories and offering a meditation on their specificities and their different versions of personification, a final hypothesis is formulated as to the relevance of this figure of rhetoric for the creation of characters, or personae, and for Pessoa’s formation as a ‘failed’ or perhaps a successful fiction-writer. This volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies offers the most recent criticism on Alberto Caeiro's poetry and influence. It is the first time that at this level an entire critical volume has been devoted to the Master of Fernando Pessoa's heteronyms. This work undercuts the well-established habit of publishing a book on that constructed unity called Pessoa, whatever Pessoa means, and it probably does not mean anything. Paraphrasing what
