Alcoholic Beverage, Feasts, and Rituals: For the Practice of Ritual and Feast Archaeology in Korean Prehistory2022 •
In order to activate ritual researches in Korean prehistoric archaeology, this paper reviewed the existing ritual-related discussions and looked at the social functions and meanings of feasts, which have not received so much attention in the meantime, in connection with archaeological materials. Feasts are a strategic behavior performed for the main purpose of confirming the identity of groups and securing solidarity, acquiring, maintaining, and strengthening socio-political power by hosts who held those feasts. Essential parts of the feasts are the hospitality, and among others alcoholic beverage is an indispensable drink in the feasts. In this paper, after reviewing in detail the cases in China where the existence of alcohol was confirmed through archaeo-scientific analysis, theoretical discussions on rituals and feasts and critical review of ritual-related studies in Korea were conducted. After that, I briefly reviewed the archaeological data that can be interpreted in relation t...

Korea entered the US wig market in the mid-1960s and rapidly grew at once. This was possible in a trade environment where wigs were popular as fashion accessories in the West from the 1950s, and the United States participated in the Vietnam War and regulated the trade of Chinese people. Korean wig workers processed Asian hair from underdeveloped countries, including Korean hair, to suit the taste of whites in the West. In the late 1960s, when the fashion changed from human hair wigs to synthetic fiber wigs in the United States, Korean wigs responded with mass-production of small items, and mass-produced low-wage wig workers. As a result, the price of wigs became cheaper, and blacks joined the wig consumers, which in conflict with the American black human rights movement led to a decline in wig prevalence, leading to a reduction in wig workers in Korea.

The Imagined Space-Time of Yang Ju-dong’s research on the Korean Classical Poetry and its Contexts of the ‘Korean Parnassus’ in the late Japanese Colonial Period of Korea2020 •
This paper analyzes Yang Ju-dong(1903~1977)’s research on the Korean classical poetry, focusing on its contexts of the ‘Korean Parnassus’ group in the late Japanese colonial period of Korea, from the late 1930s to the early 1940s. At the time of the second Sino-Japanese war, writers of “Munjang”, a popular coterie magazine founded in 1939, tried to ‘invent’ the language and literature of Joseon(Korea). Yang Ju-dong’s research on the Korean classical poetry, particularly interested in lexicology of ancient Korean language and literature, were related to such tendency of Munjang and its writers at that time. Concerning the discourse of ‘Korean classical literature’, Yang ju-dong conceived double boundaries of the Korean classical literature, the diachronic ‘past’ and the spatial ‘Korea=Orient.’ By fusing these concepts of time and space, he organized a singular ‘function’ of space-time of the Korean literature, that the Korean classical literature was valuable because it came from the past(classical antiquity), which meant it preserved Korean=Oriental aesthetics very well. These imagined boundaries and their function relied on two inventions. The first was the invention of the continuity of Korean language, from the language of Silla dynasty to the modern Korean. The second was the invention of the genealogical extension of Korean language toward Manchurian or Mongolian, based on the hypothesis of ‘Ural-Altaic language family.’ It seems that Yang ju-dong’s research internalized, to a certain degree, the logic of Japanese Imperialism, especially on its Orientalism or direction of ‘post/anti-westernization.’ To quote Homi Bhabha’s words, however, the invention of Yang ju-dong’s research can be analyzed as ‘resistance,’ because it interpellated Joseon(Korea), which was completely eliminated, into the Japanese imperialistic initiative of ‘Greater East Asia’, and therefore, implied “the signs of cultural difference and reimplicate them within the ‘deferential relations’ of colonial power.”

The Royal Banquets during the Joseon Dynasty and the Functions of Hangeul Records: Focusing on Royal Protocol for the Court Feast at Hall of the Mother’s Good Fortune in 18272015 •
The purpose of this paper is to understand the forms and functions of hangeul manuscripts that were produced for royal banquets in the late Joseon period, focusing on the wine offering rite held by Crown Prince Hyomyeong for the King Sunjo and Queen Sunwon on September 10, 1827. When Royal Protocol for the Court Feast at Hall of the Mother’s Good Fortune was compiled to record the wine offering rite, not only Chinese manuscripts but also hangeul manuscripts were produced. And potable record of ritual protocols for the rite written in hangeul are extant. In order to understand the production background of these hangeul manuscripts, this paper examined first the aspects of use of hanguel in royal household by means of review and classification on the procedures and all concerned of the ritual. In the following, this paper took a closer look at the form, content, function as well as the production background of each hangeul manuscript such as praise, lyric, explanation of the ritual, potable record of ritual protocol, and royal protocol. All of these manuscripts were made for women of royal household, and more specifically, manuscripts for Queen Sunwon and Crown Princess were praise, lyric, explanation of the ritual, and royal protocol; manuscripts for housewives of royal families were praise, lyric, and portable ceremony procedure. Even though the contents were equal, according to the user’s status materials, forms as well as the function were different according to the user’s status.

Exploring the Problem of “Name” in Pak Chiwŏn’s Prose2021 •
This study explores the problem of “name (myŏng, 名)” in Pak Chiwŏn’s prose works Sŏn’gyultanggi (蟬橘堂記), Kwanjaegi (觀齋記), Palsŭngamgi (髮僧庵記), and Yŏngjaejipsŏ (泠齋集序). While Sŏn’gyultanggi discusses the emptiness and constraints of names, it also expects that they will induce efforts to discover the “true form” of the things themselves. Kwanjaegi observes how all things, from the self(ah, 我) to the name(myŏng, 名), change and die through the teaching of “obediently receiving and conveying.” While both works talk about the emptiness of names, they paradoxically also demonstrate their possibilities. Moreover, Palsŭngamgi highlights the contradictory existential condition of humans’, particularly literary intellectuals, ceaseless attempts to make a name for themselves, while Yŏngjaejipsŏ explores what this means through literature. The analysis can also be contrasted with Pak’s political treatise Myŏngnon (名論) in which he describes how the property of pursuing fame, that is, making a name for oneself, is a fundamental element that decides human action. In sum, the aforementioned works do not refute the making of names and making a name for oneself, but reflect Pak’s anxieties regarding such actions. Within his strong repudiation and doubt, he indirectly expresses the possibilities and necessity of leaving a name behind through humor, concealment, reversal, and twists.

한국판 중용(中庸) 척도의 개발 및 타당화(Development and validation of the Zhongyong Questionnaire)2017 •
This article describes the development and validation of the Zhongyong questionnaire(ZQ), a self-report instrument for measuring Zhongyong attitude. Theoretically, Zhongyong includes three aspects: (a) dialectic thinking and cognitive flexibility; (b) emotion regulation and balanced affect; (c)internal motive to consistently choose Zhongyong behavior. In study 1, thirty-seven out of 99 preliminary items were selected by six scholars studying Confucianism and Zhongyong for the face validity and the 37-item ZQ was administered to 352 college students. Data suggest that the ZQ consists of 19-item with three-factor structure. In study 2, 368 people participated to investigate the instrument’s reliability and validity and the relations between the ZQ and related scales. Results from two studies indicate that the 19-item Zhongyong Questionnaire has a three-factor structure(harmony/regulation, balance/stability, empathy/tolerance), good internal consistency and 2-week test-retest reliability. The ZQ was significantly correlated with other measures of cognitive flexibility, dichotomous thinking, emotion regulation and dysregulation, and basic psychological need satisfaction, confirming the scale’s convergent construct validity. The concurrent construct validity of the ZQ was demonstrated by its correlation with the Zhong-yong Thinking Style Scale. There was a significant correlation with age and Zyongyong attitude. When controlling for age, there was a significant difference in the level of Zhongyong attitudes based on marital status and religion. These results suggest that the Zhongyong attitude can be developed through diverse experience. In the discussion section, the implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are discussed.
