Then I remember why I still work in a university. It's because I'm an activist-scholar, someone who sees the value in radical education and into public debate of ideas which challenges the norm. I bring my activism into the university for a number of reasons. In spite of the way they are being re-engineered, universities are still amazing places of encounter, conflict, diversity and debate (not to mention resources), and it is crucial that we find ways to defend and expand these and open them up to others. Engaging with the activist world, while it raises the eyebrows of many senior colleagues, excites and inspires my students. (Chatterton, P., 2008) Chatterton (2008) took some of the words out of my mouth in partially explaining my 20 years teaching at the University of Massachusetts Boston as an activist-scholar. Against gig Academia: Connectivity, Disembodiment, and Struggle in Online Education2020 •
In this paper, we examine the process of decomposition as well as the struggle for recomposition of academic labor, which we understand as a contradictory positionality within so-called “gig academy.” Ours is a rhetorical intervention to, first of all, explicitly connect contemporary working conditions in academia to the general process of neoliberalization; second, illustrate how online education platforms (or LMS) mediate important aspects of the academic labor process; and third, reflect on how these dynamics make faculty unionizing both urgent and particularly challenging.

Negri uses the concept to describe people who are mired in casualized work, but have heady educational qualifications and an easy facility with communication and cultural technologies. They live at the complex interstices of capital, education, and government, and they do so under the sign of cybertarianism…

Universities around the world are responding to a myriad of changes, pressures and opportunities in weird and wonderful ways, both of which require critical scrutiny and creative action. Take, for example, the University of Warwick’s recent branding strategy. In 2015, alongside a visual make-over and redesigned logo, the university issued a set of guidelines laying out the ‘Warwick tone of voice’. These guidelines instruct university staff how to communicate ‘in a tone that’s true to our brand’. The 12-page document implores employees to ‘embed the language of possibility’ into every aspect of their communication by adopting the rhetoric of ‘what if?’:
