The village of Las Papas is located in the northernmost area of Fiambalá (Tinogasta Department, Catamarca, Argentina), in the San Buenaventura mountain range (2.678 mosl). Three burials, called Las Papas-I (LP-I), Las Papas-II (LP-II) and Las Papas-III (LP-III), were recovered in the northern periphery, near a soccer field and at the village entrance, respectively. The distance among the burials does not exceed 200 meters; however, significant variability in mortuary practices was identified within that small area for different periods of the cultural development, mainly due to the marked differences in the grave goods, the forms of inhumation of the bodies and the types of burial structures identified. The three are primary simple burials of males (a juvenile, a young adult and a middle adult) and cover a temporal range from the first centuries before the Christian era to the thirteenth century. This paper presents a characterization of the biology, isotopic record and mortuary behavior of the recovered burials, and the presence of stress indicators derived from anemia in the individuals is discussed.

Two Case Studies From Hunter-Gatherer Burials in France (La Vergne) and Argentina (Arroyo Seco II2019 •
This article presents two case studies from totally distinct geographic sectors and cultural environments-the Arroyo Seco II cemetery, in the Pampas in Argentina (7800-6300 BP and 4800-4300 BP), and La Vergne, in the west of France dated to the Early Mesolithic (9280-9000 BP), on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean. These two graveyards correspond to hunter-gatherer populations, where shells are a major component. They present exceptionally well-conserved remains and were attentively and accurately excavated. Burial environments such as these, especially graves in open ground, enable us to discuss the status of decorative and ornamental objects in relation to the deceased, and their position in the tomb. Some of them contain abundant corporal personal adornments, whereas others seem to correspond to the deposition of objects in highly ornate perishable materials; each of which contributes to the funerary arrangements. The comparison of such distant examples compels us to go beyond strictly local contingencies and allows us to better underline similarities. It also provides the opportunity to bring to light different types of human action on materials, including the comparison of natural entities with the shaping of raw materials. With respect to prehistoric personal adornments, this debate is reminiscent of the earlier distinction between shells (skeletal) and shellfish. Within this comparative scheme, a new example-the Germignac grave complex (6090 BP) from the early Neolithic of western France where shells are also a major component of adornments-will then highlight how the first farmers, at least in this case, erased the natural identity of certain elements.

Leather funerary packages: Mortuary practices and differential preservation in a Late Holocene prehispanic cemetery (Pampean region, Argentina)The ethnohistorical and archaeological bibliography on mortuary practices of the indigenous societies of Pampa and Patagonia refers extensively to the use of the envelope of bodies, for different purposes. One has been to facilitate the transport of the deceased until their final place of burial. This practice has been registered on the Chenque I site, a hunters- and-gatherers cemetery located in the Parque Nacional Lihué Calel, La Pampa, Argentina, used during the last part of late Holocene. It was applied both for primary as to secondary burials, being single and multiple. Some burials surrounded by a whitish doughy substance, where shell beads are imbricated, were recovered during the excavations carried out in various areas of the site. The purpose of this paper is to communicate the results of the verification methods applied to the aforementioned substance to corroborate that it is the product of the taphonomic degradation of leather. These methods allowed an approach to the identification of the species employed, possibly Rheidae. Secondly, the state of preservation of enveloped burials was compared with others without it, in order to inquire whether this mortuary practice had an effective role in protecting the human remains.
1225 a 1288 años d.

Child burials in domestic contexts at an Iron Age hillfort: The Oppidum of Monte Bernorio (Villarén, Palencia). Enterramientos infantiles en contextos domésticos en un castro de la Edad del Hierro: El Oppidum de Monte Bernorio (Villarén, Palencia)The practice of child burials underneath house floors in the Late Prehistory has been considered a characteristic trait of the Iberian religion. However, this custom has also been documented in different archaeological sites both in the Mediterranean and Central Europe as well as Celtic areas of the Iberian Peninsula, so we can explain this funerary practice by an Indo-European origin. We report the archeotanatological and osteoarcheological study of 10 subadults found in the Iron Age site of Monte Bernorio oppidum, the first archeological site in the western and central Cantabrian region with this funerary rite documented. It is the confirmation of both, the survival of an ancient funerary ritual, widely extended in all Europe, and its presence in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. We also review all the archeological sites in the Iberian Peninsula with similar archeological contexts and analyse the rite from the bioarcheology of the care.

We explore and discuss the theoretical approaches that have shaped osteological studies in Argentina over the past several decades. Initially, from the second half of the nineteenth century until well beyond the first half of twentieth, the influence of European approaches dominated with emphases on racial types as well as diffusion theories. Human remains were considered and studied separately from their contextual associations and used mostly as sources for typological and racial analyses. Due to a growing academic influence from both American and European scholars, since the 1970s, osteological research in Argentina has become increasingly grounded in modern bioarchaeological techniques and results interpreted within bioarchaeology theories as well as those related to social dimensions of mortuary behaviour. While this development parallels changes in the field elsewhere, some bioarchaeological studies still use inappropriate samples and methods which lead to biased data analysis...

"Tomb 3 at La Pijotilla (Solana de los Barros, Badajoz, Spain): a bioarchaeological study of a Copper Age collective burial.""This paper presents the results of the bioarchaeological analysis of La Pijotilla Tomb 3, which combines the application of standard methods in osteology and paleopathological analysis with the study of the funerary context. La Pijotilla is one of the most extensive Copper Age (c. 3200-2200 cal BC) settlements in Iberia, presenting a funerary complex with one of the largest human bone deposits available for the period, of which Tomb 3 is a prime example. The human bone collection from Tomb 3 at La Pijotilla was commingled and highly fragmented, in spite of which each bone fragment and tooth was classified. The resulting MNI was 178 individuals, based on the analysis of 283,329 human bone and tooth fragments. An equal distribution of adult individuals by sex was identified, and most of the bone and tooth fragments corresponded to adult individuals, with little representation of subadults. The non-metric traits present suggested similarities with other prehistoric populations of the Spanish south-west. Most of the pathologies were related to joint and dental diseases, such as calculus and linear enamel hypoplasia."
