Within the Project of Excellence of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Verona, M. Adele Cipolla (academic field L-FIL-LET/15 – Germanic Philolgy) intends to create a digital scholarly edition (DSE) project of the whole manuscript tradition of the so called Alexanderlied. This is a middle high German poem belonging to the transnational literary tradition concerning Alexander the Great and it is handed down in 3 redactions (V, B, S). The first goal of this project is the creation of a digital edition prototype of V (Vorau, Augustiner Chorherrenstift, cod. 276, see facsimile on https://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/stav_ms276?ui_lang=ger) with diplomatic and normalized transcription. Codicological and palaeographic analysis of the document along with analytic textual (i.e. prosopographical) and linguistic (i.e. morphosyntactic) annotation will be a specific focus of XML/TEI encoding. The editorial work will be a test-bed for both the evaluation Edition Visualization Techology (EVT), the software chosen for the visualization, and for the identification and evaluation of the editorial criteria, which later will apply to the rest of manuscript tradition. The software EVT (versions 1.2 and 2) has been developed by Roberto Rosselli del Turco (University of Torino and Pisa) and his team for the edition of Germanic texts and it is TEI compliant. EVT is used for several edition projects (Vercelli Book Digitale: http://vbd.humnet.unipi.it/beta/#104v, Codice Pelavicino: http://pelavicino.labcd.unipi.it/evt/, HumaRec: https://humarec-viewer.vital-it.ch/). EVT 1.2 is suitable for the creation of digital documentary editions and it has important functionalities like image-text alignment, the possibility to choose different levels of transcriptions, and to analyse the document by means of manipulation and annotation of the digital facsimile (es. hotspot or magnifier). The software will be implemented by Dr. Fabrizio Chiarello (DH technical support team of the Department of Excellence), in order to improve and adapt it to the specific editorial goals. The work will be coordinated by Prof. M. Adele Cipolla and research assistant Dr. Anna Cappellotto.
Analysis of Ancient and Medieval Texts and Manuscripts: Digital Approaches discusses the possibilities offered by collaboration between classical studies and digital resources, in order to explore what could be the future of digital humanities. The digital revolution has changed the approach to research, especially for humanities. In the last decades the process of image scanning, transcription and creation of digital archives of text has materialized, but many scholars aren't conscious of the results it can achieve for their studies. For that reason, Analysis of Ancient and Medieval Texts and Manuscripts: Digital Approaches aims to show the possibilities given by computer-assisted methods in the analysis of ancient and medieval codices. In particular, there is a focus on the combination and comparison of data, which can lead

Digital Publication of Texts in Palaeo-European Languages and Script. The State-of-the-Art2021 •
The discipline of Epigraphy has been rapidly transformed in the last decade. This huge effort of digitisation has given place to a number of online databases that store mainly texts in Latin and Greek; but texts written in Palaeo-European languages and writings have not been yet, in my view, digitally treated and stored in a proper, satisfactory way, according to the FAIR Data Principles. Although lot of work has been done in this direction, an online publication of texts written in these ancient European languages has not been not carried out, since what has been done is not Findable (it lacks of URIs), Accessible (it is only readable by people; not by machines), Interoperable, or Reusable. In such a fragmentary corpus it becomes vital to collect every textual and extratextual information. However, the efforts invested in digitising Palaeo-European epigraphy latterly have been remarkable: Hesperia, LexLep, TIR, AELAW, and RIIG, among others, are some examples of the databases that currently playing an important role in the decipherment and better understanding of some of the languages and writings that were spoken in Europe before the Roman settlement.

Describing Inscriptions of Ancient Italy. The ItAnt Project and Its Information Encoding Process2023 •
This article discusses the challenges addressed in the digital scholarly encoding of the fragmentary texts of the languages of Ancient Italy according to the TEI/EpiDoc Guidelines in XML format. It describes the solutions and customisations that have been adopted for dealing with the peculiarities of our epigraphical documentation and with the formalisation of epigraphical information deemed interesting for data retrieval in a historical linguistic perspective. The making of a digital corpus consisting of new critical editions of selected inscriptions is a work carried out in the context of the project “Languages and Cultures of Ancient Italy. Historical Linguistics and Digital Models”, which aims to investigate the languages of Ancient Italy by combining the traditional methods, proper to historical linguistics, with methods and technology proper to the digital humanities and computational lexicography. More specifically, the purpose of the project is to create a set of interrelated digital language resources which comprise: (1) a digital corpus of texts editions; (2) a computational lexicon compliant with the Web Semantic requirements; (3) a relevant bibliographic reference dataset encoded according to the FRBRoo/LRMoo specifications. Additionally, selected textual data and scientific interpretations will be encoded using CIDOC CRM and its extensions, namely CRMtex and CRMinf. The present contribution thus tackles one of the main aspects of the project, and proposes significant innovations in the encoding of critical editions for epigraphic texts of fragmentary languages, which will hopefully foster future interoperability and integration with other external datasets, a paramount concern of the project.

Abstract: The paper deals with the creation in electronic form of editions of texts provided with an apparatus indicating variants. The method is to encode the entire text as an XML document with a very simple structure, dividing the text into a linear, non-hierarchical series of segments, each segment consisting of a section of text plus the variants to that section with an indication of the witness(es) in which they are found. XSLT is used to number the portions of text and the corresponding variants and then to extrapolate the variants into an apparatus. The result is an XML document with a relatively simple structure. Additional mark-up may be added at this stage if required, for example further automatic transformation into a TEI-conformant document.
