The deconstructive theory formulated by Jacques Derrida at the end of 1960 supposed the establishment of a new paradigm for the literary investigation. Since then, post-structuralist criticism has been discussing the possibility of achieving a solid knowledge of the literary work as a consequence of its instability as an object. However, the cultural relativism derived from the deconstructive criticism entails a series of problems that affect both the scope of teaching literature and the role played by the literary theory and criticism. Such is the case that this paper analytically tries to decompose the elements that constitute the differential theory of the literary text, in an attempt to deconstruct the deconstruction, to examine the possible structural biases and contradictions implicit in its foundations.
This article presents an essay about Jacques Derrida's deconstruction and hermeneutics. It is also intended to give information about Post-Structuralism and its contribution in literary theory since Derrida's opinion made an impact including literary theory. By the way, this article hopes to make clear about Derrida's influence on contemporary thought and giving feedback for those who are new beginners in the field of Literary Theory and Criticism. A Deconstructive Analysis of Derrida’s Philosophy2021 •
This paper is designed to reveal some of the philosophical ideas of Algerian-born philosopher Jacques Derrida. Jacques Derrida, a leading figure of Post-structuralism and Postmodernism is best known as the founding father of ‘Deconstruction’ but many of his philosophical ideas such as, logocentrism, differance, phonocentrism, aporia, anti-representationalism, etc. still remain rarely focused. Therefore, in this paper the researcher has tried to explore various philosophical ideas of Derrida before the readers to get acquainted with Derrida’s contribution to the world of knowledge. This research work has done with the help of both primary sources i.e., original writings of Derrida and secondary sources including the texts written by others. Here, all of Derrida’s ideas are explicitly described and justified by an inductive method. Finally, a concluding remark on deconstruction has been made by comparing Derrida’s idea of “Differance” with Nagarjuna’s concept of “Emptiness” which left...

The term Deconstruction by the French theoretician Jacques Derrida has gained enormous attraction in the field of literary criticism. This revolutionary theory has challenged many clichéd ideals in criticism, be it literary or artistic criticism, in the twentieth century. Like literature, Deconstruction confronts the already established rules and standards associated with the meaning, understanding and discussion of and about art. Application of theory of Deconstruction on the western art is relatively a new concept adopted precisely in the latter half of twentieth century. Art produced by South Asian artists, has gone through many established sets of rules, that have been highlighted by many local and foreign critics and historians, time and again. However, application of theory of Deconstruction on a painting by a Pakistani artist is something new in art criticism. This study investigates and explores one of the famous figurative paintings, Talism-e Hoshruba, (magic that can blow ...

Contradictions in fiction: Structuralism versus Jacques Derrida and deconstructionThe phenomenon of contradiction has been highlighted in recent decades by both postmodern art and deconstructionist philosophy. Deconstructionists seem most interested in contradictions generated by language and hence pervading all human life; they expose contradictions and proclaim their inevitable and devastating impact on human beings’ epistemological efforts. Postmodern art, though sometimes expressing radical scepticism, seems less predictable and more versatile in its use of contradictions. This paper attempts to offer a structuralist study of contradiction in discourse in the context of fictional narratives. Three contemporary novels—The Unconsoled by Kazuo Ishiguro, Life of Pi by Yann Martel and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski—have been selected for the study. The paper focuses on the uses of contradictions and, in particular, their contribution to the works’ meaning and the process of interpretation. It appears that contradictions in fiction perform various meaningful tasks and, with rare exceptions, do not preclude the possibility of a consistent reading of the text. The second section of the paper brings into consideration deconstructionists’ and Jacques Derrida’s views on contradiction. While the uses of contradictions in postmodern fiction might supply an argument with which to oppose the epistemic scepticism advocated by deconstructionists, Derrida’s original treatment of contradictions, related to his critique of logocentrism inscribed in language, might be impervious to this kind of argument. Indeed, Derrida’s critique of language might partly undermine structuralist studies of contradictions; one should, however, remember that this critique rests ultimately on Derrida’s own uncertain metaphysical assumptions.

An application of Derrida’s Deconstruction Theory on a Stylistically MotivatedThe current study has primarily two aims; first one is to analyze the poem "The Road Not Taken" stylistically on different linguistic levels; Morphological, Syntactical, Semantic & Phonological and the second aim is to apply Derrida's deconstruction theory on to the selected poem to decode the implicit meanings of the poem. The study will also explore the contextual and hidden meanings by working on word, sentence and meaning levels. The analysis concluded that the poem is stylistically rich and implies a lot of implicit contexts.

The objective of this paper centers on two fundamental issues, that is, to formulate some strategies of the process of “deconstruction,” and to explore what kind of function, beyond the realm of philosophy and linguistic concerns, it asserts in terms of reading the text. In doing so, this paper attempts to offer an alternative and “supplement” perspective on the thesis of Jonathan Culler, Christopher Norris and Peggy Kumuf, to name only a few, who consider deconstruction a “theory,” a “method” or a “doctrine” concerned only with metaquestioning of language, which in turn destabilizes the foundation and established ideology. In theoretical speculations, I shall limit my concerns to literary texts only.
The primary goal of this paper is to share a way to apply literary theories. As literature students, knowing literary theories and apply those theories to criticize literary works is something common to do. However, applying those theories to make literary works is an uncommon thing. That is why, through producing literary works using literary theories, an alternative way to teach literary criticism can be conducted. This way is done in literary criticism class. In the class, the students are directed to produce literary works using a literary theory, deconstruction theory. Based on a book entitled The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales by John Sciezka and Lane Smith, students know the example of literary works using deconstruction theory. After knowing the example, the students can find their own literary works to be deconstructed. The works are hoped based on Indonesian famous stories which contain much local wisdom. Thus, besides the students recreate Indonesian stories, the students are also reintroduced on the local wisdoms. Then, the students can develop the story using deconstruction theory to reproduce the story. Finally, the stories are discussed in the class to find out whether the students succeed in applying deconstruction theory. Therefore, it can be said that applying literary theories to produce literary works is a way to teach literary criticism. Instead of criticizing, this method offers production as a mean to learn literary theories.

The aim of this paper is to offer a critical overview of Derrida’s deconstruction of Western Metaphysics, concentrating in particular on his early texts (e.g. Of Grammatology, Writing and Difference, Dissemination, etc.) during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Besides the discussion of key Derridian concepts as “logocentrism” or “différance”, the paper approaches deconstruction as enacting a process of “double reading”. This double reading commences with an initial stage or level which seeks to reconstruct a text’s authorial intention or its vouloir dire. This initial level then prepares the text, through identification of authorial or textual intention, for the second stage or level. At this second stage or level, which is the passage to deconstructive reading per se, the blind spots or aporias of the text are set forth.
