Over the past twelve months the US National Science Foundation NSF has sponsored a series of Workshops on interdisciplinary graduate design education: what it is and how we do it. Our graduate students are our future researchers, teachers—and JMD authors. Colleagues from the Pennsylvania State University have led this effort, which has included a substantial number of design researchers and educators from engineering and beyond. There is a critical question about how engineers can relate and collaborate with their non-engineering colleagues, and an attendant one about how work crossing the engineering boundaries can be properly reported in a design journal like JMD. I have asked our colleagues to present some initial thoughts, to provoke some further thinking and engagement in the evolving discipline of design.

Experiences and Proposals for Interdisciplinary Engineering Design Courses2011 •

A graduate course in the pedagogy of engineering design has been developed, implemented, and refined over the past three years. This was done to address a three-fold need: undergraduate design courses can benefit from the involvement of teaching assistants who are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the day-to-day learning process, graduate students are seen to be capable of contributing significantly to design pedagogy, and these graduate students can also become much better prepared to take on leadership roles in the area of undergraduate teaching. It has long been assumed that the mere fact of exposure to many years of being taught provides sufficient preparation for graduate students to take on the teaching mantle. The shift away from conventional modes of teaching to inquiry-based learning, however, requires that teaching personnel take on quite different roles and use a distinctly different set of skills and tools than those with which they are familiar. Modeling the pe...

In Pursuit of New Knowledge: The Need for a Shift From a Multidisciplinary to a Transdisciplinary Model of Doctoral Design Education and Research (Conference Paper)In this paper, I will examine the need for a transdisciplinary model of doctoral design education as a part of an overall cross-disciplinary design education. In doing so, I will narrow down cross-disciplinary design education and research as an amalgamation of multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research models. In addition to this, I will address some of the challenges and the opportunities associated with cross-disciplinary research, while highlighting the prospects of bridging the cross-disciplinary research gap.

Teaching Interdisciplinary Design Between Architecture and Engineering: Finding Common Ground While Retaining Disciplinary Expertise2015 •
This project was designed to develop a curricular and pedagogical model for teaching multidisciplinary engineering design to senior-level undergraduate students at the Colorado School of Mines. The two-semester course sequence involved students from seven engineering disciplines working in multidisciplinary teams under the direction of engineering, science, and liberal arts faculty to complete design projects for clients from industry and government. The course was designed to help student creatively solve open-ended "real" problems; learn to use a multidisciplinary approach that simulates actual industrial experience; work with others in small design teams; appreciate and consider nontechnical constraints; develop client relations; learn to conduct independent research; and enhance oral and written communication skills. Two pilot projects were successfully completed, with students, faculty, and clients all rating the program favorably. Included are project descriptions, e...
