Mediating Historical Responsibility Memories of ‘Difficult Pasts’ in European Cultures
Private Memory, Postmemory, and Public Memory in a Battlefield: Mediterranean Border Crossings, Italian Public Discourse on the Invasion, and the Counter-Public Political Project of a Common Postcolonial (Post-)Memory2024 •
's concept of "postmemory" describes the relationship that the "generation after" bears to the personal, collective, and cultural trauma of those who came before, which are "remembered" only via stories, images, and behaviours transmitted throughout their upbringing. These experiences were transmitted in such a deep and affective manner, seemly constituting memories in their own right. Postmemory's connection to the past is, thus, mediated not by recall but by imaginative investment, projection, and creation (see Hirsch 2012). Could the term postmemory be used to describe generations of young Black and Brown Italians and Italian residents who were born from migrants in the wake of the age of migrations towards Italy? 1 I believe it can, but only to the extent that we acknowledge both the need of "concrete(ness) and actual examples of inter-generational transmission of diverse traumatic pasts" (Demaria et al.

Quo Vadis SDGs: Transforming the Pledge of Sustainable Development into an African Public Policy CommitmentThe world unanimously espoused the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Develop-ment in 2015, determinedly aiming at global prosperity while protecting the envi-ronment. The SDGs, were designed under global unity, and shared aspirations. The unanimously agreed targets embodied that spirit of unity as the guiding light for all nations. Regrettably, having noted that we are not on track to meet the them, the UN convened a high-level political forum aiming to put them back on track. As most of the goals were missed (between near misses and a few very startling disappointments), what does this hold for Africa an what can be done? On the other hand, AI will usher in an era of infinite opportunities or herald a new realm to end humanity, but it will undeniably transmute the world. Will Africa use the power of AI to achieve the SDGs. This think-piece augurs on the need to focus on an African public policy and commitment for urgent actions within the SDG priorities: goals aligned with poverty alleviation and climate change adaptation within the remit of maximizing the value of resources and technological innovation to address stresses on global public goods. Some of the largest tropical rainforests in the world are in the Congo basin. Using nature-based sequestration alone, these forests can provide up to a third of the world’s sequestration needs. For Africa, the urgency is to focus on transforming political, economic and social governance milieu. By controlling grand corruption, illegal exploitation of mineral resources and a commitment to address poverty and diseases from the billions saved in illicit capital flows, Africans can fulfill the promise of a livable continent as heralded in the recent Nairobi Climate Summit Declaration.
Žarko B. Veljković, THE NAME OF THE DARDANIANS: ETYMOLOGY Abstract: The paper discusses the etymology of the ethnonym Dardanians, sg. Dardanian, i.e. the etymology of the following forms of the name recorded in antiquity, Greek (exonym) Δάρδᾰνος, Δαρδᾰ́νιος, Δαρδᾰνεύς, Δαρδᾰνιάτης, in Asia Minor also Δάδρδᾰνος (*Δάρρδᾰνος) and Old Egyptian (exonym) d-r-d-nj, and Latin Dardănus. An overview of all the scientific etymologies and/or observations known to the author so far, 1854–2022, has been given. Finally, our opinion on the subject has been presented. It is about Dacian language, which is related to Thracian. The suffix to derivate ethnonym - adjective (by origin) has been recognized, Dacian / Greek exonym -ᾰνος/-ᾰ́νιος [-an’a] < Proto-Dacian *-ānyas. It is derived from the noun, that is, personal name, Dacian Δαρδα [darda], having the meaning “literatim, descendant of Dard-, roughly **Dardides”. The concerned Δαρδα, secondarily also *Δαρρδα [dar:da], i.e. *Dard would most likely be the first king of the Balkan Dardanians, after whom they got their name. He was preserved in myth under the name of Dardan. The onomastics from other Indo-European languages co-radical with this Dacian male name were also listed, and the etymology of this already Indo-European name from the root der- “to mutter, jabber, growl; to mumble, make noise” in reduplication (full or truncated) has been explained. Accordingly, this name in Dacian may have probably meant “roughly, one who is resounding, beating from the drums (around him)”, i.e. “roughly, one who rattles with anger (and wickedness)”. Either in the sense of a cult, or in the sense of the warrior. And certainly in the sense and context of the leader of the tribe.
