ABSTRACT Forty years after AT&T's PicturePhone, most video communication systems are still designed as augmented telephones that aim at reproducing face-to-face communication. In this paper, I discuss this implicit and hardly questioned goal. I propose the concept of multiscale communication systems as an alternative approach to computer-mediated communication. The paper presents the multiscale approach, three systems that illustrate it and some directions for future work.
