Tokens, Value and Identity: Exploring Monetiform Objects in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, edited by A. Crisà, Bruxelles, Cercle d'études numismatiques - European Centre for Numismatic Studies (Travaux du Cercle d'études numismatiques, 22)
Reconsidering the history of studies on Islamic tokens and jetons2021 •
Glass weights and discs of various material (e.g. silver, copper, clay, etc.) intended for a variety of scopes (magical, religious, talismanic) are the monetiform objects considered in this contribution together with the history of their studies. Through a careful reading of the first studies, dating back to the seventeenth century, focused on glass discs, and thanks to the correspondence between scholars, it has been possible to reassess the succession of the hypothesis made to explain their function(s). However, further research devoted to Islamic tokens and jetons is needed, especially in connection with archaeological excavations.
