Elizabeth Siddal, icon of Pre-Raphaelite art, from Millais’ Ophelia to the countless portraits painted by Rossetti, was often represented in languid poses, with her eyes closed or in connection with sleep and death symbols such as the poppy. The representations of her by male artists have been widely explored by art critics, while her biographers have insisted on her laudanum addiction and her alleged suicide. Her own pictorial and poetic production, on the other hand, was consigned to oblivion until the advent of Gender Studies and feminist Art History. Drawing on these critical approaches, this paper examines Siddal’s self-representational strategies in her paintings and poetry: the topos of sleep connected with death is used by Siddal in her own verses. Siddal adopted and re-invented the traditional role of the sleeping beauty, the passive female figure, the woman victimized by male love who sees in death, sleep and altered states of consciousness a possibility of utopian female freedom. Her use of sleep and death images and the ‘opiate’ atmosphere of her poems can be read as a form of liberation from the conventional role that was imposed upon her, and as a subtle strategy of rebellion – a critique of Victorian gender ideology.

(German below) In the course of the last two decades the history of sexuality of the 20th century in the German speaking countries has evolved into a broad research field. On the one hand its main focus has moved away from the first half of the century, on the other hand sexualities „deviating“ from the heterosexual norm no longer (exclusively) constitute the pivotal object of interest. Based on a sample of studies published during the last decade we argue in this overview that – despite the great variety of research topics – there are some common features. Not least we show that the implications of the theoretical debates on the history of sexuality are not always implemented – even if they are explicitly mentioned. Nevertheless, the major part of the works reviewed here meets with the standard of these debates. Against this background we argue that narratives of emancipation or liberalization have to be analysed within the historical context of their emergence. By applying concepts such as normalization, politicisation, or therapeutization – amongst others – we show that alternative accounts are possible. „Sexuality” thus becomes comprehensible as a shifting configuration of bodies and forms of subjectivation. Furthermore we argue that various aspects of a history of sexuality in the 20th century cannot be described without reflecting the impacts of the (emerging) consumer society. Finally we ask whether the „dispositive of sexuality” really is about to lose its relevance as it recently has been claimed by some interventions within both the cultural and the academic fields.
Abstract The history of emotions had been a marginalized field for many years; lately, however, it has started to attract increasing attention. Currently, the history of emotions is regarded as a highly productive and innovative branch of historiography, both in terms of empirical research and of methodological reasoning. This review offers insight into both these areas. It covers German-language and English-language literature on the history of emotions focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, although some work on medieval or ancient history of emotions is mentioned, too. The first part discusses different theoretical and methodological approaches to the history of emotions. The second part raises the questions how a history of emotions can be defined and what it should be concerned with: the history of emotionalities and emotions or the analyses of definitions, normative validity and the shifts in the conceptualization and " agency " of specific emotions. One such specific emotion, the rather extensively researched history of fear, is used in the third part in order to exemplify different ways to access emotions in history. The fourth part is devoted to trends in the two currently most prolific disciplinary fields: political, communication, and media history on the one hand, and history of science on the other. The review concludes with a short outline of today's research gaps as well as future perspectives in the history of emotions field.
