This article analyzes the Ottoman corsairs’ role in the slave trade in the premodern, by concentrating on their activity in the Mediterranean. The current historiography considers the corsairs as an apparatus, a war-machine of the Ottoman Imperial Navy against the Habsburg Empire, with inter-imperial rivalry in the forefront with little regard to social and economic considerations behind the formation of corsairship. To remedy this, the present article reorients the scholarly analysis by taking the transnational slave trade of the premodern Mediterranean carried out for the Sublime Porte by the corsairs as a comparative framework. By mainly using Imperial edicts from the Ottoman Archives of the Prime Ministry, I will demonstrate that the Ottomans did not integrate corsairs into the naval organization for maritime expansion, but the corsairs were employed to facilitate the network of slave trade as the corsairs terrorized the seas and plundered the coastal towns, supplying the slave markets in Istanbul. In this respect, this article will present a comprehensive overview of the Ottoman corsairs' role as slave trade intermediaries in the premodern. Apart from filling the literary void in existing secondary literature on the history of slavery and the corsairs, it will create a basis for a more sophisticated understanding of the changes that came with the Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry in the Mediterranean.
