The need to integrate insights from both natural and social sciences, to deal with complex interactions from the global to the local level has been affirmed in different arenas from the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) to the IPBES (2013). The need for integrative studies seems particularly relevant when it comes to understand the numerous and intertwined relationships between health and the environment. The insights of the local communities for daily local observations or to point sudden changes can be precious both for scientists and policy-makers. In Southeast Asia, hotspot of biodiversity and of emerging infectious diseases, policies having an impact on the environment could have unpredicted effects on the dynamic of zoonotic diseases. Community Health Impact Assessment in Thailand and participatory approaches appear appropriate tools for the elaboration of policies considering the indirect effects on zoonotic diseases.

Ecohealth is an approach that recognizes there are links between humans and their biophysical, social and economic environments that are reflected in an individual’s health. Ecohealth brings together physicians, veterinarians, ecologists, economists, social scientists, planners and others to understand how ecosystem changes are negatively impacting human health and to provide practical solutions to reduce the negative health impacts of ecosystem change.

Pandemic plans recommend phases of response to an emergent infectious disease (EID) outbreak, and are primarily aimed at preventing and mitigating human-to-human transmission. These plans carry presumptive weight and are increasingly being operationalized at the national, regional and international level with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO). The conventional focus of pandemic preparedness for EIDs of zoonotic origin has been on public health and human welfare. However, this focus on human populations has resulted in strategically important disciplinary silos. As the risks of zoonotic diseases have implications that reach across many domains outside traditional public health, including anthropo-logical, environmental, and veterinary fora, a more inclusive ecological perspective is paramount for an effective response to future outbreaks. This article explores One Health (OH) as a conceptual means of achieving synergy across zoonotic disease domains. We argue that, rather than merely monitoring ecological factors, pandemic plans for an outbreak of zoonotic disease should also address prevention and miti-gation within ecosystems. To support this argument, we contrast the human-centred public health approach with OH, as three interrelated enquiries: knowledge deficits created by neglecting critical studies that link important environmental, non-human and human artefacts within an ecological perspective; understanding socioeconomic factors that drive zoonoses to become pandemic risks; and discussing the emergence of a novel ethical discourse. We apply this framework to the case study of Singapore and conclude with some ethical considerations for the OH approach.

For those interested in the rapidly emerging field of cybersecurity data science (CSDS), below is a corpus of 33 book-length works. The list covers publications going back to 2001, although two-thirds of the works (22 out of 33) were published in the last five years (2016 to 2020). The works cover a broad range of topics but have a core focus on data-oriented approaches for assuring cybersecurity. Both statistical and machine learning-based approaches are covered.
The Words and World of Ge bcags Nunnery: Tantric Meditation in Context
Words and World of Ge bcags Nunnery: Tantric Meditation in Context2024 •
Ge bcags (Gebchak) dgon pa, founded in 1892 in Nang chen, Khams (Qinghai Province, PRC), is still active today with around 250 nuns practising intensive Vajrayāna rituals, yogas and meditation. The nuns’ knowledge goal is embodied, nonconceptual awareness, yet they spend many hours daily reading texts as part of their training. This ethnography questions the role of reading in Ge bcags’ tacit knowledge tradition by investigating the whole context of the nuns’ lifeworld and ways of learning. At a time when Tibetan learning practices are quickly modernising, this book demonstrates a Buddhist tradition whose textual knowledge is not exactly literal, but cultivated through continuous, whole person learning.
Active learning strategies can help guide students toward professional practice and encourage higher order thinking reflected in graduate attributes. Previous studies show that active learning or flipped learning improves learner's understanding and can be very useful in developing cognitive skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving and also helps retention of information. This approach allows having the most personalized interaction of the teacher with students. Despite the growing number of flipped courses, however, quantitative information on their effectiveness remains sparse because of very less number of researchers on it. This paper investigates the various major aspects of flipped technology to explore the efficiency of a flipped classroom model on student's performance and ease of use. An experiment conducted in a secondary school in Iraq to presents a research of comparing traditional class that engages students in some learning to a flipped classroom that creates more time for active learning using PAPRIKA technique of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). The overall results show that students and teachers preferred flipped classroom more than traditional cognitive learning. This suggests that the teachers in Iraq schools should be ready to do more planning in order to implement a flipped classroom model in the educational process.
