According to Horatius a literary work has two functions, Dulce et Utile”, which mean aesthetic and beneficial. One of the greatest Indonesian classical literary works, Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah, written by Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah famed as HAMKA, covers both functions. The novel presents the aesthetic of ill-fated love story that is forcedly ended because of unsuited strata between both Hamid and Zainab, whether the unmatched between both lovers are of economic problem, social status, and even classical reason which fortified love and man's bravery upon proposing the woman. This love is finally recorded as the ill-fated love story for the love of both is brought to the grave. It naturally becomes the “dulce” for the readers because HAMKA was a religious figure, there have been implicit messages in his work and represent the life of HAMKA, or even his society at that time. It also brings benefits for the readers because the construction of love between both Hamid and Zainab was built on pure faith and respective norm.
Have we ever imagined the world without love? In any field, approach and culture, people will talk about love and the importance of feeling the sense of belonging. Every religion either, promotes love. In such areas as religious preaching in Islam, the term " love " mostly used to relate mankind with God. Nonetheless, it is rare to find a prominent scholar to describe or write about love of a romantic relationship between a man and a woman before the marriage contract been signed. It is neither the essential context nor the substantial significance, rather, it is regarded as a serious issue in Muslim community. Hence, the creative writing of this thematic relationship is apparently isolated. Ironically, this was among the remarkable works of Hamka, a well-known prominent Nusantara Muslim scholar in the early twentieth century. In his famous novel Di Bawah Lindungan Ka'bah, Hamka portrayed an Islamic theme on the absolute title, but he made a very different atmosphere in the contents of the whole dramatic novel. On the other hand, he had cynically criticized the tradition of Minangkabau in his splendorous romantic novels Tenggelamnya Kapal Van Der Wijck, and Merantau Ke Deli. Here, there are some questions to be pointed out, is it an Islamic acceptance by an-attempt of advising Muslim societies through a romantic writing? Instead of politely criticizing the traditions of his people, are there other purposes in his creative writings? How can the Muslim communities, in specific, accept the ideas of dakwah in this clash style?

The background of this article is the centrality of eloping in the culture of Sasak Lombok. That centrality then forces novelists from there to raise the issue of Sasak eloping in Indonesian literature. This article discusses the representation of kawin lari (elopement) in Johan Mahyudi's novel Bisikan Tetesan Hujan. It seeks to explain the position of kawin lari, as a tradition of Lombok's Sasak people, within Indonesian literary discourse. This article thus applies Stuart Hall's theory of representation, combining semiotic and discursive approaches. Data from the novel were analyzed using semiotics, with discourse analysis being used to position kawin lari within its cultural context. Kawin lari is presented in the novel from a modern perspective, being positioned as a tradition that shackles and encumbers women—and therefore victimizes them. Salwa, a victim of kawin lari, attempts to leave her husband, Wawan, in order to pursue her true love. This novel thus offers a ...

This article aims to create dialog of “kidnapping the bride” reality in several studies and to construct the practice in reality. Discussion of “kidnapping the bride” practices in literature and cultural studies of Lombok intends to find contemporary Indonesian literary models of ethnic Lombok. To achieve this goal, this article applies Stuart Hall’s representation theory. In literary studies, “kidnapping the bride” is constructed as a critique of nobility. Sesak Cinta di Tanah Sasak novel construct “kidnapping the bride” as a criminal act. The meaning is constructed by Islamic discourse and tradition (nobility). Resistance to the discourse is what presents a romantic discourse. Romantic discourse, in the novel When Love Takes to Go, is constructed to fight against feudalism and capitalism. Romantic discourse in Opto Ergo Sum is a tradition discourse. The discourse is gathered from different voices, men’s and women’s voices. Women’s voice tends to be strong to the lid of the real wo...

A Comparison of the Concept of Romantic Love in the Novels Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 and Salju Sakinah2018 •
This study uses textual analysis to explore the concept of romantic love by comparing the Indonesian Islamic novel, Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 , by Habiburrahman El-Shirazy with the Malaysian Islamic novel, Salju Sakinah , by Zaid Akhtar. This investigation utilises the Theory of Persuratan Baru by focusing on the concept of the nature and function of literature. This study discovers that the creation of novels infused with Islamic elements and romantic love in Indonesia and Malaysia is influenced by two main factors, which are the awareness of the writer to disseminate Islamic messages and the profit motive of the publisher. These two factors cause novels, imbued with Islamic elements and romantic love, to become a branded or marketable commodity in both countries. The findings reveal that Ayat-ayat Cinta 2 utilises the concept of romantic love with emphasis on sexual intimacy while Salju Sakinah places emphasis on the language of understanding over physical intimacy. Keywords: Islamic nove...

Burdah is a literary work in a form of praise ode composed by Imam Al-Busiri who deeply loves Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him (pbuh). The writer's love to Prophet Muhammad pbuh is composed in very elegant manner. Like someone who's falling in love Imam Al-Busiri pours it in a series of praise ode as the expression of love and longing to someone he loves. Longing is because the writter never meets. Love and longing frequently appear in the praise ode verse of Burdah. Some parties consider Burdah is an excessive expression and some of them state it shirk like the writing of Abu Ubaidah Yusuf As-Sidawi with the title of "Shirk in Burdah al-Busiri". The purpose of the research is to analyze and interpret message in the praise ode verses particularly the text on Love and Longing. The research uses deconstruction analysis method from Derrida because it wants to reveal the implicit meaning of the praise ode. The analysis is conducted to theme unit or segment in Burdah's text, i.e. concerning Love and Longing and it deconstructs meaning from other texts. The analysis result is expected to become the comparison for the previous researches that punish that Burdah's text are totally full of shirk and Bid'ah (religious innovation).
