The National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Aspects of its history, collections and artefact documentation through the study of its Photographic Archive and other archival sources. Dr Maria Chidiroglou Archaeologist - Curator National Archaeological Museum, Department of the Collections of Vases, Metal and Minor Arts Artefacts 1 Tositsa Str., Athens 10682, Greece mariachidiroglou@gmail.com mchidiroglou@culture.gr The National Archaeological Museum, founded in Athens in 1866, is known through its Collections of Greek and Roman sculptures, ceramic vases, terracotta statuettes, bronze artefacts, glass vessels and jewellery. Its Photographic Archive, one of the oldest of the Greek Archaeological Service, recently implementing the updating and digitizing of its materials, houses analog, digitized and digital photographic documents, the earliest analog ones of which date in late 19th century. Many glass-plates and other early negatives of the Archive illustrate sculptures and vases acquired by the National Museum in its early period, as well as landscapes, views of early excavations, sites and monuments of the ancient Greek world. This paper aims to briefly present moments from the early history of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens by tracing the context, provenance and excavation data of a number of example artefacts from its Collections. Photographs from the Museum Archive, early reports, documentation and other archival sources will help us investigate artefact data, as well as gain insights into the early archaeological research in Greece.

Abstract: According to their preservation, returning to archives seems essential-even consubstantial-to the understanding of historic contingencies of any collection, both from the point of view of its material preservation and of its scientific and cultural valuation. As other in the whole museum of national archaeology, the collection of comparative archaeology (foreign archaeology) was formed by the progressive incorporation of material sets the composition of which translates , beyond the historic hazards, the state of mind and the inclinations of the people who gathered them then protected (directors, connoisseurs, collectors, traders, explorers, conservatives [curators], etc.). The works led for twenty years, among which some will be evoked, show that the restoring efforts.

Synthesis on the work carried out since 2002 in Thasos as part of the Thanar Project in the center of the city. The results concern thirteen centuries of history, since the time of Archilochus, the first Greek lyrical, who came from Paros with his companions to reinforce at Thasos, "the foggy island", a newly founded colony, until the time of Heraclius, under whose reign (610-641 AD) Thasos suddenly ceases to exist, in 620. This research thus falls under both Protohistoric, Classical and Byzantine archaeology.
