AAD Cares: Community Outreach Programs
The American Academy of Dermatology is committed to improving the lives and health of people across the country.
Learn how the AAD is building shade structures to protect kids from the damaging effects of the sun, educating children and adults about the importance of skin care, providing access to dermatologic care, and saving lives through free screenings to detect skin cancer early when it’s most treatable.
What we do
Millions of people have been educated about the importance of sun protection and early cancer detection through AAD’s SPOT Skin Cancer™ initiative.
For over 30 years, the AAD has been offering young people ages 8-16 who have chronic skin conditions a summer camping experience unlike any they’ve had before.
Hikers across the globe are raising awareness and funds for the AAD SPOT Skin Cancer™ campaign, working to create a world without skin cancer.
The AAD provides grants to install permanent shade structures for outdoor locations that need protection from the sun, such as playgrounds, pools, or recreation spaces.
This youth education campaign provides free resources to educators to teach children ages 8-10 and 11-13 about acne, skin health, and sun protection.
The AAD has several international programs that offer grants to Academy members who provide much-needed dermatologic care in underserved communities around the globe.
Through Resident Education Grants, the AAD ensures residents get off to a great start in their careers and as leaders of the specialty.
This teledermatology program provides patients in underserved communities with dermatologic care by facilitating safe and secure provider-to-provider dermatologic consults with an easy-to-use telemedicine platform.
Through this AAD initiative, underrepresented medical students receive opportunities encouraging them to join the specialty, ultimately helping to increase diversity in dermatology.
The Leadership Institute provides invaluable training, mentorship, and networking opportunities that give dermatologists the skills to succeed and become leaders in their communities.
Ways to give
“Our philanthropic support allows the AAD to go beyond what dues alone can accomplish. From camp for kids, to helping residents attend our meetings, our donations benefit both our specialty and the recipients.” - Stephen P. Stone, MD, FAAD
“The AAD does a lot for us, our patients, and our specialty. Two years ago I joined the AAD Friends Circle, the AAD’s monthly donation program. I like giving back to programs and services that make a difference.” - Daniel D. Bennett, MD, FAAD
“It is a privilege to be a dermatologist. When you stop to consider the many ways that dermatology has made our own lives better, what a simple gesture it is to give back and to help those in need.” - David C. Adams, MD, FAAD
“I have included the AAD in my will. I consider it an honor to offer support which will continue the work of the Academy into the future. It is meaningful to continue to support our Academy after we are gone.” - Stephen B. Webster, MD, FAAD
“It has been a privilege and an honor to team up with the AAD’s Adopt-a-Shade program. If we can increase awareness and use of this program, imagine how many skin cancers we can prevent.” - Joy B. Chastain, MD, FAAD

How much time do you have to give?

The Good Skin Knowledge youth education campaign allows you to download free lesson plans to teach kids and teens the facts about common skin, hair, and nail conditions.
Camp Discovery offers kids living with chronic skin conditions a one-of-a-kind summer camp experience.
There are many ways for AAD member dermatologists to volunteer and give back to their patients, their communities, and the specialty.
Even if you are not a dermatologist, there are many opportunities to join the AAD in helping children, local communities, and members of the public in enhancing skin health.
