It is unknown whether social presence in internet-based MBA courses enhances students’ career success. This study examined general self-efficacy and goal orientation mediation models to determine what strengthens MBA students’ social presence and their career planning self-confidence. Data included 278 online MBA students in an AACSB-accredited college of business. The regression analyses demonstrated that perceived general self-efficacy and goal orientation related to students’ career planning self-confidence. The mediation analyses revealed that internet self-efficacy, perceived general self-efficacy, and goal orientation had an indirect mediating effect on social presence and career planning. Implications are offered for business communication educators.

PurposeDuring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, employers struggled to develop virtual onboarding (VO) experiences among new employees. Prior research has examined VO processes. This study, by contrast, compares online commentaries in relation to current research findings to determine a functional description of effective VO.Design/methodology/approachUsing a qualitative, inductive thematic analysis, the researchers explored new employees' online, anonymous, public commentary about the employers' VO experiences. Through analyzing 83 posted communications, the researchers sought to not only categorize themes, but to also identify meaning within the employees' commentary. From the thematic analysis, meaningful themes were established and compared to existing literature to identify comprehensive trends in effective VO.FindingsThe analysis developed nine themes of discussion question (DQ) prompts and nine themes of discussion responses. The professionals'...

This study analyzes 295 tweets by four U.S. companies engaged in discovering a vaccine for COVID-19. Tweets were analyzed to understand how their Twitter feeds balanced corporate and product branding (vaccine, medicines, etc.) and disseminated scientific information relating to COVID-19. The results suggest that these companies were actively embedding technical information about COVID-19 in their corporate and product branding. Tweets providing technical and scientific information about the progress made toward developing a COVID-19 vaccine garnered high levels of user engagement from their target audience. Findings from this study indicate the growing importance of technical communication in corporate settings during a public health crisis.

Ever since traditional sexual harassment through haptic communication has extended into digital realms, cases of digital abuse have increased. This chapter identifies this digital abuse phenomenon by comparing and contrasting face-to-face versus digital sexual harassment. More specifically, this chapter contributes to the understanding of haptic communication and sexual harassment, or sexual harassment that occurs using physical touch behavior in combination with virtual touch in both physical and virtual settings in social interactions. The negative effects of digital sexual harassment emphasized in this chapter include mental, emotional, and social consequences that may be detrimental to a person's quality of life. As sexual harassment through haptic communication continues to impact workers in organizations, researchers and practitioners may need to develop strategies to cope with this form of abuse. Future directions for haptic communication sexual harassment scholarship are also discussed.

Higher education institutions make efforts to achieve the 25% threshold of enrolled Latinx students to become a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). When the Latinx faculty-to-student ratio is low, it is challenging to retain Latinx students (Vargas et al., 2020). Historically, institutions have struggled to recruit and retain Latinx faculty (Delgado-Romero et al., 2007). Therefore, establishing a Latinx faculty mentorship program can assist in mentoring and retaining faculty to graduate Latinx students (Garcia & Dwyer, 2018). This paper reviews two Latinx faculty mentorship programs: Research for the Educational Advancement of Latin@s (REAL) and the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE) mentorship programs. This paper will review the methods and practices of the REAL and TACHE mentorship programs. The theoretical frameworks of socio-cultural capital, community cultural wealth, and platίcas, the intracultural interactions in Latinx relationships, are interwoven within these two mentorship programs to provide a sense of belonging to navigate and persist within the culture of higher education. The effectiveness of these two mentorship programs will be discussed, and best practices will be shared. Finally, practical implications will be provided to guide higher education stakeholders who wish to implement their own Latinx faculty mentorship program.

The use of empathy, compassion, and self-compassion can aid in the reduction of workplace suffering due to workplace cyberbullying. As such, this chapter defines each of these constructs and reviews their relevance to the management of workplace bullying. The main purpose of the chapter was to review prosocial interventions that incorporate positive psychological constructs such as empathy, compassion, and self-compassion. Prosocial workplace interventions serve to prevent and reduce workplace cyberbullying behavior in at-risk organizations. Interventions can be used to educate and train employees and leaders across organizations on how to cope with workplace cyberbullying as it emerges at work. A case study is offered along with recommendations to highlight how organizations might use an intervention approach to manage workplace cyberbullying. Future research directions are also offered to inspire workplace cyberbullying intervention research in organizations.

Abstract Distracted driving behavior often occurs when drivers mindlessly send or receive text messages with their mobile devices. It is imperative to understand the relationship between mindfulness and texting while driving behavior because distracted driving behavior has led to a reported increase in texting related accidents and mortalities. Based on this report, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between mindfulness, self-control, frequency of texting-related accidents, near-miss accidents, and texting while driving behavior. Using a total of 609 adults with an average age of 34.11 (SD = 12.21), results showed that observe, aware, and describe were related to texting while driving. Additionally, we found evidence that self-control partially mediated the relationship between mindfulness and texting while driving. Results also showed that near-miss texting while driving accidents moderated the relationship between mindfulness and texting behavior while driving. The observed inverse relationship between mindfulness and texting while driving can increase researchers’ understanding of self-control’s role in vehicular accidents triggered by texting. Implications and limitations are offered, along with suggestions for future research.

The high demands placed from a society on individuals may impact the perceived work-life balance of individuals in cohabiting and married relationships. Work-life imbalances may lead to poor communication, which can impact the feelings of wanting to dissolve the relationship due to dissolutionment. Also, when partners are dissatisfied with the listening behavior in their relationship, this may lead to relationship dissolution. To examine the relationships between work-life balance, listening satisfaction, and relationship dissolution among cohabiting and marital couples, this study analyzed data from the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at the Bowling Green State University (2010). Instruments included the Marital Disillusionment Questionnaire and the Work-Family Conflict Scale. The study included 2,150 individuals, including 1,075 couples with 50% of females and 50% of males, and the average age of participants was 44. Correlation analyses results demonstrated diffe...

Introduction: The aim of this qualitative study was to assess Latina/o students’ sugary drink consumption patterns and understand the social determinants leading to this consumption behavior in order to design more effective health communication–based campaigns. This study examined the perceived reasons behind high levels of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption among college students of Hispanic origin in the Texas Panhandle region. Method: Fifteen Latina/o students were interviewed via an innovative social media–based online interviewing protocol. Results: Subsequent analyses revealed that peer pressure, socializing, unavailability of packaged drinking water during social events, targeted advertisements, and poor lifestyle choices were perceived reasons for high intake of SSB in the focal population. Conclusion: This study recommends designing public service announcements geared to Latino/a youth that increase awareness about the long-term health risks that can result from ...

This study investigated whether self-efficacy influenced students' educational outcomes in introductory-level economics courses. First, this study investigated the correlations between problem-solving self-efficacy, academic self-efficacy, and motivation. Second, this study investigated whether problem-solving and academic self-efficacy served as predictors of students' motivation, test performance, and expected grade. Correlational analyses suggest that problem-solving and academic self-efficacy are correlated with student motivation. Results show that problem-solving self-efficacy was a predictor of student motivation and test performance. Academic self-efficacy and problem-solving self-efficacy were also predictors of their expected grade. Implications and future directions for economics education are also discussed.

Workplace bullying continues to be a prevalent workplace conflict issue in organizations around the world. The organizational reliance of communication technologies and digital media have enabled workplace bullying to evolve into workplace cyberbullying. Workplace bullying impacts individuals, relationships, organizations, and societies. For this reason, this chapter reviewed the transdisciplinary workplace bullying literature to conceptualize key constructs such as workplace bullying and workplace cyberbullying. This chapter also reviews the prevalence of workplace bullying, antecedent behaviors of workplace bullying, the consequences of workplace bullying, and the intervention approaches. Lastly, this chapter offers several recommendations for the future trends of workplace bullying scholarship.

Nowadays, transnational businesses are exploring opportunities around the world and at the same time trying to be receptive towards cultural differences. Recent studies indicate that while some corporations vie successfully in the global marketplace, others have failed to sustain their competitive advantage because of cultural imperialism or due to paucity of knowledge of their managers on international assignment. Corporate analysts argue that in order to gain from the abundance and growth of international venture, the key to global business success depends on effective cross-cultural etiquette and global workforce diversity management. Other significant studies emphasized that managers worldwide should be trained in interpersonal relationship and group communication competence, and should be equipped with cross-cultural negotiation skills that can maintain universal competitiveness. Increasingly, corporations recognize the value of preparing global managers, because business objec...

This chapter reviews strategies adopted for a school-based cyberbullying prevention intervention entitled, “Social Networking Safety Promotion and Cyberbullying Prevention.” This intervention was introduced in 2011 by the Arizona Attorney General to promote social networking safety and prevent cyberbullying in middle-school students. Two studies examined the effectiveness of this intervention: one with middle-school students, and the other with parents of middle-school students. The evaluation of this intervention was guided by the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM). For the student study, results indicated that the intervention positively impacted perceptions of severity and response efficacy, as well as attitudes and behavioral intentions. For the parent study, results indicated that the intervention successfully increased perceptions of susceptibility, as well intentions to engage in the following recommended behaviors: save the evidence, do not retaliate, and tell a trusted ...

This study explored whether the Bicycle Drawing Test (BDT) measure was applicable to students’ academic self-efficacy and academic performance in undergraduate students in introductory level economics courses. Two economic courses were assessed using a paper-based questionnaire during the spring of 2016. Data were analyzed using independent t-tests, correlational analyses, and a one-way ANOVA. The results demonstrated that age differences occurred in the completion of the BDT measure. Another finding was that left-handed individuals were more skillful at drawing the frame of the bicycle in comparison to right-handed individuals. Also, students’ performance in a microeconomics problem-solving assessment was positively associated with academic skills and self-efficacy. Additional findings and implications were also discussed in light of the academic self-efficacy and academic performance literature.

This chapter provides an overview of cultural factors that contribute to the understanding of workplace bullying and cyberbullying including gender, race, ethnicity, disability, and sexual orientation. Each of these cultural factors explain the dynamics that occur among cyberbullies, cybervictims, and cyberbystanders. Additionally, because there has been a lack of theoretical incorporation in the workplace bullying and workplace cyberbullying literature, this chapter provides an overview of three intercultural communication theories including conflict face negotiation theory, intercultural workgroup communication theory, and anxiety uncertainty management theory. Recommendations and future directions are also offered to encourage the application of intercultural communication theories in explaining and predicting workplace cyberbullying behavior.

Listening skills are invaluable in health care settings to reduce medical errors and miscommunications, and to facilitate health care interactions and patient–physician relationships. The aim of this study was to explore the relationships between patients’ listening styles and the four components of medical communication competence. Regression analyses were used to examine and identify the associations between listening styles and medical communication competence among 522 self-identified chronically ill patients. Findings revealed associations between the four listening styles, information giving, information seeking, information verifying, and socioemotional communication. Implications suggest listening style preferences may affect patients’ medical communication competence in medical consultation visits.

Because business statistics students often experience a lack of statistical motivation, business educators need to understand the factors that influence students’ motivation levels in undergraduate-level business statistics courses. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of math self-efficacy and self-compassion on students’ motivation levels and the gender differences among the main variables. The regression results showed that math self-efficacy was a positive predictor of statistics motivation. Self-compassion was also found to be a partial mediator of the relationship between math self-efficacy and statistics motivation. Gender differences were also found in business students’ math self-efficacy, self-compassion, and statistics motivation.

Cyberbullying victimization and perpetration continues to be a serious public health, criminal justice, victimology, and educational problem in middle schools in the United States. Adolescents are at a higher risk of experiencing cyberbullying as a victim and/or as a bully given the frequency of their use of the Internet via social networking sites such as Facebook and mobile devices such as cell phones and tablets. To address this important problem, the purpose of this investigation was to examine cyberbullying victimization through communication technology as a predictor of cyberbullying perpetration, body image, healthy eating and dieting behaviors, and life satisfaction of sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade-level middle school students. The World Health Organization recruited participants by using a Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) survey. In this in-class questionnaire, 6,944 middle school students were asked about their cyberbullying experiences as a victim and a...

Operationalizing feminism has been a challenging tribulation despite the various efforts of previous feminist and critical scholars. Previous Feminist conceptualizations fail to acknowledge the politicized process of feminism and have focused too much on gender mainstreaming, which can limit the scholars' ability to ask critical questions about the process of feminism. While a plethora of definitions of Feminism exist, this paper aims to redefine the existing theory and to examine the process of the intersection of sex-gender oppression on the one hand and the sex-positive women's rights on the other. The paper discusses the background of feminism that situates movement for women's liberation in the existing literature. It also analyses the early phase of Feminism, including early activists who sought to advance women's suffrage; the later phase of women's fight for their rights focusing on their politicized inequalities, and the sex-positive feminism that strongly campaigns for sexual freedom to enjoy sexual pleasure and promiscuity at par with the men to liberate women from sex-gender oppression. After analyzing each phase, this paper argues that redefining Feminism provides important implications for post-modern Feminist scholars on how we can conceptualize this theory to ask critical questions for inquiry purposes and to discuss the process of understanding Feminism's political, sociological, economical, and historical roots.

The challenges of achieving work-life balance in higher education have been widely documented by previous education studies. Faculty who struggle with achieving balance between their professional and personal lives due to the demands of higher education may eventually become dissatisfied with their job in academia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of non-tenured, tenure-track, and tenured faculty members' needs to achieve effective work-life balance in their careers. Data were collected from 213 faculty members using Qualtrics and were analyzed using grounded theory. The analysis revealed eight emergent themes to understand faculty members' work-life balance essentials. The themes included a) home responsibilities, b) family support, c) family life pressures, d) daycare/childcare, e) health issues, f) faculty support, g) work culture, and h) personal work challenges. Implications from this study can inform administrators in higher education about the work-life balance needs of their faculty members.

Prosocial workplace interventions serve to prevent and reduce workplace cyberbul-lying behavior in at-risk organizations.

Description: Given users' heavy reliance of modern communication technologies such as mobile and tablet devices, laptops, computers, and social media networks, workplace cyberbullying and online harassment have become escalating problems around the world. Organizations of all sizes and sectors (public and private) may encounter workplace cyberbullying within and outside the boundaries of physical offices. Workplace cyberbullying affects the entire company, as victims suffer from psychological trauma and mental health issues that can lead to anxiety and depression, which, in turn, can cause absenteeism, job turnover, and retaliation. Thus, businesses must develop effective strategies to prevent and resolve such issues from becoming too large to manage. The Handbook of Research on Cyberbullying and Online Harassment in the Workplace provides in-depth research that explores the theoretical and practical measures of managing bullying behaviors within an organization as well as the intervention strategies that should be employed. The book takes a look at bullying behavior across a variety of industries, including government and educational institutions, and examines social and legislative issues, policies and legal cases, the impact of online harassment and disruption of business processes and organizational culture, and prevention techniques. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as sexual abuse and trolling, this book is ideally designed for business managers and executives, human resource managers, practitioners, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and students.
