this has probably been asked before, but is your writing public? if so, where can we find it
Here’s a previous post where I provided links to my published work
As a writer sometimes you need to show, sometimes you need to tell, and sometimes you need to just kind of conceptually point at the infinite expanse of reality and go “idk man”
I’m a writer who takes a lot of inspiration from surrealists and sometimes you need to show and tell something conceptually impossible for the human mind to wrap itself around in order to basically go “bruh”
Sometimes you also need to have a conversation with a cabbage.
“Show don’t tell”
WRONG. Ten thousand books about sad old men thinking to themselves in dark corners.
I really do think that more people need to have a surrealism and/or magical realism phase. The ability to accept a story without a clear beginning or end or clear point is a good skill to have. Some people yearn for Dadaism and they haven’t even realized it.
I wrote my final paper in my modern literature class in undergrad on the Dada Manifesto by Tristen Tzara and I can honestly say it was a foundational moment in my life as an artist. It’s an essay that repeatedly screams that it means nothing and analyzing that purposeful jumble of nonsense clicked something into place in my brain that made me weirder and I’ve only been better for it. The dada manifesto remains one of my favorite essays of all time and it’s incredibly difficult to read.
If you’ve got a mind open enough for it, I’d highly recommend giving it a look.
Dadaism is basically the most extreme version of what you might classify as surrealism or modernism. It attempts to reject meaning in all of its forms. When you fully dig into it though, you find that the full rejection of meaning is impossible and in fact the rejection of meaning is a form of meaning itself.
Dada didn’t have a very long shelf life as a movement but it left a major impact on the world as a whole even if it was a pretty fringe movement in the art world. It was a direct result of the societal nihilism that emerged after WW1 and tbh there’s a reason that people have had a renewed interest in Dadaism in recent years.
That’s right. I just wanted you to learn about Dadaism this whole time. That’s what this whole reblog chain was leading up to. Learning.

Speaking as someone who works at a church, and as someone who has volunteered as a moderator for queer furries on twitch, I can tell you exactly ONE of these groups operates on a basis of constant infighting, behavioral control, threat of excommunication, and refusal to listen to novel or outside perspectives.
and it's not the church.
Only one of them has brought up my weed use to tell me I'll never amount to anything in life.
And it's not the church.
Only one of them has told me that I am, at my core, a flawed and worthless person.
And it's not the church.
Only one of them has told me that I am selfish for receiving money that was offered to me in times of need.
And it's not the church.
Only one of these groups made me feel like I had to fight to belong and to feel loved.
And it wasn't the church.
Only one of these made me feel like I had to hide my association with the other
And it wasn't the church.
