They are important promotional events for films large and small, raising awareness among audiences to support the distribution and exhibition process. Such events are traditionally organised in cinemas. Exhibitors, but also film festivals, producers and distributors, organise events for films to varying degrees. However, with the development of the online market, and more recently the Covid 19 pandemic, film events are also increasingly organised online.

The change was accompanied by debates regarding the state funding of cinema, which developed from early naïve neoliberal discourse through struggles for the internal stability of public financing of film to eventual endorsement of national mercantilist discourse that supports Czech national cinema's competitiveness on international markets. The analysis presented in the article and focused on recent discourse of Czech Film Fund revealed that current Czech film policy is largely in line with film policies of Western European countries. Yet, in contrast to non-post-socialist countries, it is conspicuously devoid of centre-left agenda in terms of equality and diversity on the labour market in the film industry. It also puts little emphasis on the reinforcement of social cohesion through cinema. As contemporary Czech society is becoming increasingly politically polarized, the accentuation of these issues could be beneficial for the state and its inhabitants for years to come.

It briefly summarizes debates on the availability of films in the digital era and examines implications of these debates for the small markets of Central and Eastern Europe. The first part of analysis focuses on theatrical distribution. It demonstrates that the selection of films available in Czech cinemas has widened after the digitalization of film projection, however, with a disproportionately high prevalence of domestic and European films and to the detriment of non-European non-US films. The second part explores through a case study of the VOD portal AeroVOD the offerings provided by Czech online distribution and concludes that they are shaped by similar principles as those governing theatrical distribution. Furthermore, the analysis shows that older films are scarcely included in the VOD catalogue, which is understandable from the perspective of industrial logic but hardly provides the abundance of films originally promised by online distribution. Subsequent analysis shows how festival awards influence the availability of films in Czech distribution.

These trends are apparent in the distribution of both blockbusters and arthouse films, although different means are employed and different activities are endorsed by arthouse distributors and cinemas than those distributing or screening films by the Hollywood majors.

The text summarises the historical context of multiplexing in the West and theoretical works on multiplexing published to date. The subsequent part, methodologically based on the discourse analysis as delineated by Charles Acland, explores how multiplexes were constructed in Czech newspapers and reports published annually by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic.

Filmoví historici se mohou zajímat o různé po-doby a kulturně-symbolické významy filmového diváctví v různých historických a geo-grafických kontextech, 2) sociologové mohou zkoumat filmového diváka například z per-spektivy teorií kulturní spotřeby a sociální stratifikace.
""The article presents an ethnomethodologically inspired ethnographic research focused on careers... more ""The article presents an ethnomethodologically inspired ethnographic research focused on careers of script supervisors in the Czech film and television industry. It explains how Czech script supervisors enter their first jobs and how their ongoing employment is secured. The present situation is compared with that before 1991, when the production in state-owned studios was replaced by a project-based system and former employees became freelancers. While informal contacts played and still play a significant role in providing first access to the industry (although in the studio era, a specialized secondary school existed for potential script supervisors and other technical crew members), ongoing employment is now secured mostly by continuous involvement with semi-permanent work groups (identified by Helen Blair in the British film industry). It was and still is usually the production manager or director who invites script supervisors to individual projects, yet as opposed to the situation before 1991, script supervisors can now choose more freely which project to participate in. The profession of script supervisor is characterized by interviewees as difficult to describe, demanding, creative, interesting and, concerning the contents of the profession, heavily dependent on the type of audiovisual product made. The profession is a gendered one as there seem to be virtually no men working as script supervisors in the Czech Republic. This stereotypical division of labour was explained by interviewees through various other gender stereotypes, particularly by the idea that women are better at multitasking, are more empathetic, that men seek careers in more prestigious jobs and would not work in an underpaid job. The stereotypes combine creating a net of simulacra that legitimizes and explains a situation in which women are paid less money on a less prestigious position that is nevertheless as equally demanding as some other professions performed by men.""

Tyto a další otázky si klade výzkum, který mapuje chování a preference filmových diváků v podmínkách pokračující pandemie covid-19 a sílícího vlivu nadnárodních streamovacích služeb. Ačkoli filmového diváka sleduje napříč různými médii a diváckými praxemi, v centru jeho pozornosti zůstává navštěvování kin. Kombinuje několik metod sběru a analýzy: dotazníkové šetření na reprezentativním vzorku české populace, individuální rozhovory, diskusní skupiny a datově explorační analýzu. Dotazník sleduje tyto základní okruhy: demografické charakteristiky, ekonomický a kulturní kapitál, obecné divácké praxe napříč všemi typy audiovizuálního obsahu a distribuce, žánrové preference, vkusovou orientaci (na ose komerční-art), vztah k audiovizuálním technologiím, praxe chození do kina, praxe domácího sledování, vztah ke streamovacím platformám, vztah k nelegálním úložištím a pirátství, dětské diváctví. Z dotazníkových dat tým vytvořil na základě tzv. analýzy latentních tříd originální diváckou typologii, kterou následně prohloubil s pomocí individuálních rozhovorů a zpracoval do podoby plastických portrétů všech pěti diváckých typů.
