Vancouver Film School (VFS) and OCAD University have partnered to deliver a cross-institutional pathway enabling VFS 3D Animation & Visual Effects and Classical Animation graduates to complete an OCAD U Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) in Experimental Animation in as little as 3 years.

What is the VFS-OCAD U Degree Pathway?

This cross-institutional pathway enables VFS graduates from 3D Animation & Visual Effects and Classical Animation to complete an OCAD University Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Experimental Animation in as little as 3 years when studying full-time.

VFS Programs eligible for this pathway are the following:

  • 3D Animation & Visual Effects
  • Classical Animation

OCAD U Degrees eligible for this pathway are the following:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Experimental Animation

FAQ

  • The applicant must:
  • Graduate from the Classical Animation Diploma or the 3D Animation & Visual Effects Diploma in good standing by June for September entry
  • Meet OCAD U’s English Proficiency requirements
  • Applicants must satisfy OCAD U’s English prerequisite and/or language proficiency requirements for admission with a minimum grade of 70% or B from one of the following:
  • For Ontario applicants: ENG4U, EAE4U or OAC English
  • Grade 12 academic English or equivalent at the discretion of the university
  • Post-secondary English course or equivalent at the discretion of the university
  • CEGEP applicants whose first language is English or French: two 603/604 series English courses (average grade of the 2 courses 70% or higher)
  • An accepted English Language Proficiency Test (minimum scores can be found here)

OCAD U offers one annual intake for the Fall term beginning September of each year.

Students will receive a total of 10 transfer credits to apply towards the 20-credit Bachelor of Experimental Animation program. Although students are required to take some first and second-year courses, students are starting in the third year out of the four-year program.

Submit a program application through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) at ouac.on.ca. Applicants must use the articulation agreement program code “HZA” for Experimental Animation on the OUAC application.

The main OCAD University campus is located downtown Toronto at 100 McCaul St.

  • Full-time domestic students should expect to pay around $7,300 per academic year
  • Full-time international students will pay around $28,000 per academic year.

  • The total fees due are based on the number of credits the student registers for per term.

While OCAD U does not offer a discount, VFS graduates completing the Classical Animation and 3D Animation & Visual Effects programs receive a value of two year’s worth of their education at OCAD U, resulting in them starting in the third year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Experimental Animation.

  • The OUAC application fee is $156.
  • For a non-Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landed immigrant), there is an additional $10 International Service fee.

Students may study part-time; however, this will lengthen the time needed to graduate from the program.

Students admitted through the Experimental Animation articulation agreement are eligible to graduate in two years (two fall/two winter terms) with full-time study. Students are encouraged to take some of their Arts & Science courses during the spring/summer term.

Currently, only VFS graduates from the Classical Animation and 3D Animation & Visual Effects programs are eligible for transfer credit.

  • Applicants who apply through the articulation agreement will receive a conditional offer of admission letter in April before being admitted in September.
  • Students must meet OCAD U’s English prerequisite and/or language proficiency requirements by the middle of July to satisfy the conditions.

At this time, seats are not limited for the Experimental Animation program. OCAD U’s average class size is 30 students.
