Love between the sexes is a central and recurring theme in all of the Jewish canonical sources. The Bible, the Talmuds, the halakhic and midrashic literature, as well as mystical works such as the Zohar, devote considerable attention to the concept of love in all its manifestations, treating both the spiritual and physical aspects of love without inhibition or complexes of any kind. Surprisingly, the centrality and pervasiveness of love in the canonical writings, and particularly love between the sexes, has been largely ignored, even by those familiar with this corpus - as if their minds had filtered, censored or reinterpreted what their eyes had read. There is thus a considerable discrepancy between what people believe or expect the Bible and other canonical works to say on the subject of love, and the ideas that they actually express.
Wisdom of Love: Man, Woman & God in Jewish Canonical Literature strives to challenge this discrepancy between the way in which source texts relate to love and the way in which they are perceived to do so, introducing readers to the extensive, profound and significant treatment of love in the Jewish canon. It addresses some of the questions and dilemmas raised by this discrepancy, while disregarding others. There is no exhaustive discussion, for example, of the reasons behind the phenomenon. My intention was to challenge the discrepancy rather than analyse it. In other words, this is a book about love, not its repression; an opportunity to study the wisdom of love, not those who lack such wisdom and are unlikely to ever acquire it.
Book description
Rabbi Akiva's Philosophy of Love is a cultural study and analysis of the Philosophy and Praxis of Love in the Teachings of Rabbi Akiva. He who first appeared in a love story in the legends; rescued the quintessential love song, Song of Songs, from oblivion; developed an entire philosophy—and practice—of marital harmony; saw love between man and woman as a sacred perfection of body, mind and spirit; asserted that “love your fellow as yourself” is the great principle from which all morality derives; preached love for all who were created in God’s image; fulfilled the commandment to love God with every fiber of his being, loving Him with all his heart, soul and might, to the his last breath. Rabbi Akiva was the only sage that entered and emerged safely from the Orchard of Love. His ideas, theories and praxis laid as a foundation for the study of the wisdom of love through the ages.
Unity within Diversity: a Common Core Curriculum for Israeli Schoolchildren, By Libat Avishai, Naftali Rothenberg, 2009, Introduction. (Hebrew)
Naftali Rothenberg, editor, The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute and Yeshiva University press, New York 2011
The book is an extraordinary cultural experience, in which they will be exposed not only to the thinking and viewpoints of contemporary writers but also to an array of ideas, thoughts, opinions and visions by forty-seven thinkers and creative artists through whose works the authors of these essays have chosen to examine the weekly Sabbath Torah portions. The essays collected here are by a diverse group of writers, each of whom was asked to consider a weekly Torah reading through the thought or outlook of a thinker or artist of his or her choice. The results reflect 1,800 years of uninterrupted cultural creativity, from the early third century C.E. until today.

Weekly Torah Portion as an Expression of Knowledge (Hebrew), an introduction to the book: Week in: Israeli Intellectuals Write about the Weekly Torah Portion Editor: Naftali Rothenberg.
Chapter Six: Harmony in Love
The chapter: “Harmony in Love”, relates to the theory and practice of harmonious love, presenting a series of theoretical dicta that offer a guide to love relationships and intensify the position of Halakhah (religious law) regarding their realisation. Rabbi Akiva was not merely a theoretician of love, a formulator of ideas. He was also a legislator, a decisor who developed a particular halakhic method—often boldly innovative—with the intention of encouraging marital harmony. The practical themes discussed are: Laws of Menstrual Impurity, Incompatible Marriage, Divorce and the Release of Deserted Wives (aguna), and The Ordeal of the Wayward Woman (sotah).

About the Article:
The uniqueness of the Song of Songs reflects in the difference between the expressions of love in its content versus the manifestation of love in the prophetic literature. For generations, there was a debate among the sages about the acceptance and holiness of this book. The article presents the expressions of contention among the sages about the question of the sacredness of the book and the interpretation that determined its status for generations. Interpretation, which is expressed less in textual explanations and more in changing the reference to the place and meaning of love between man and woman and hence - love in all its other manifestations. All of Song of Songs is an allegory of the fact that love between a man and a woman in this world is so sublime that, at the same time, it offers the only path to understanding the meaning of love of God.

This article looks into the appearance of the androgyne myth in the Jewish canon. The androgynous unity of male and female preceded the state of separation and is an expression of the harmonious whole. Epistemic awareness of the precedence of the androgynous whole is the source of the desire experienced by both male and female following their separation, which leads them to reunite. The main part of the article, devoted to the rabbinic and mystical interpretation of the story in Genesis of the creation of human. In the following, we will present the expansion of the androgenic being as a symbol and as inspiration beyond creation and the Garden of Eden. Finally, we will see how these contents are applied and relate to Jewish couples and families at their wedding and during their life together. We will find out what the challenge of harmonious love is and how it expressed in the intimate couple space.

The image of Rabbi Yitzchak Ze'ev Halevi Soloveitchik, Rabbi of Brisk (1959-1886), is an interesting figure in itself, which also gives insights that may indicate the deep significance of leadership in the ultra-Orthodox world, its power, its limitations and its impact beyond its time and place. He made a significant impression on the formulation of the paths of the ultra-Orthodox communities in Israel, and his image was established as “Gadol Hador” (The great sage of his generation). The study of the Rabbi of Brisk is still in its infancy, and relatively little has been written about it so we will not be able to present preliminary insights into its character and its impact, and we hope that in the future there will be more in-depth studies.

Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik (1903–1993) was one of the most prominent leaders of modern Orthodox Jewry in the United States for nearly half a century. He stood out among rabbis because of his broad Torah learning and general learning, his pedagogical ability, his rhetorical capacity, and his halakhic authority. His rabbinic and Zionist activity also influenced religious Zionism in Israel.
Rabbi in the New World: The Influence of Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik on Culture, Education, and Jewish Thought examines the extent to which his leadership influenced the character of Orthodox congregations in the United States, what the characteristics of this influence are, and in what areas it was manifested. Should we see Rabbi Soloveitchik as a guide only for his followers, or did his influence extend beyond the boundaries of Orthodoxy in America? Can we determine which of his students faithfully reflects his thought and his vision? To what degree was his vision flexible in relation to the challenges of the present and the future, and how open was he to interfaith discourse?
The book includes papers by twenty-six scholars, experts in the historical, sociological, educational, theological, and philosophical contexts of the work and times of Rabbi Soloveitchik.
The editors are Dr. Avinoam Rosenak, the head of the Jewish Thought Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a research fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, and Rabbi Prof. Naftali Rothenberg, senior research fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute and the rabbi of Har Adar.

Wisdom by the Week: The Weekly Torah Portion as Inspiration for Thought and creativity invites its readers to partake of an extraordinary experience: study and examination of the fifty-four weekly Torah readings through the prism of diverse works by a wide range of thinkers and artists. The writers of these essays likewise form a diverse group of men and women, coming from cultural and ideological backgrounds as varied as those of the thinkers and artists they discuss. Readers accordingly will embark on a journey proceeding simultaneously through two worlds: the world of the essay-writers and the world of the thinkers and artists whose works inspire us to take a new look at the weekly portion.
The book offers opportunities to those interested in the views of the classical Torah commentators, such as Nahmanides, Sforno, and KeliYakar; of philosophers, such as Maimonides and Isaac Abarbanel or John Locke and Spinoza; of modern thinkers, such as Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch, Franz Rosenzweig, Hermann Cohen, and Sigmund Freud; of Torah greats, such as Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Alter (author of Hidushei HaRim), Rabbi Meir Simhah of Dvinsk (author of Meshekh Hokhmah), and Rabbi Israel Meir Hakohen of Radin (author of Hafez Hayyim); of contemporary thinkers, commentators, and scholars, such as Emmanuel Levinas, Martin Buber, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hakohen Kook, the Hazon-Ish, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan, Rabbi Yitzhak Hutner, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchick and NehamaLeibowitz; and of artists and authors, such as Shulamit Hareven, Yitzhak Danziger, Dalia Ravikovitz, S. Y. Agnon, and A. B. Yehoshua.
Wisdom by the Week documents the endless inspiration afforded by Scripture to thinkers and artists – an inspiration whose powerful force continues to grow in modern times.

(for book abstract see bellow English version: Naftali Rothenberg, The Wisdom of Love: Man, Woman & God in Jewish Canonical Literature, Published by Academic Studies Press Boston 2009.)
The Wisdom of Love strives to challenge the discrepancy between the way source texts relate to love and the way they are perceived to do so, introducing readers to the extensive, profound, and significant treatment of love in the Jewish canon. This is a book about love, not its repression; it is an opportunity to study the wisdom of love, not those who lack such wisdom and are unlikely to ever acquire it. The Wisdom of Love brings about not only a change in perception―recognizing the existence of the wisdom of love per se―but also the realization that this wisdom is the very foundation of religious wisdom as a whole, rather than a peripheral branch of it. All love derives from a single source: love between man and woman. It is from this source that all other manifestations of love, such as love of God, love of wisdom, and love of one’s fellow, draw their meaning.

Unity within Diversity is an account of a unique experiment designed to test the possibility of devising a common core curriculum, relating both to values and to scholastics, for all educational streams in Israel. It proposes a model methodology and enumerates various ways in which a core curriculum could be implemented in practice. The volume is based on an experimental project run by the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, which involved teams in each of the four educational streams in Israel: the State (secular) system, the State Religious system, the State Arab system, and the Independent (Ultraorthodox) system. In schools of all four streams there are elements that can serve as anchors for the joint core curriculum, without detracting from the school’s unique character and without compromising the principles of the community that it serves. This model offers the core curriculum as a systemwide educational element that develops in a bottom-up direction, starting from the values and content that constitute the foundation of education and learning in the various schools and to the public arena as a whole.
Policymakers, in the Government and Knesset as well as in the different sectors, could draw on this book to improve the education system. But even if the political and educational establishment fails to do so, the book could serve as the seedbed for a common core curriculum that emerges from the grassroots, with principals and teachers, as well as pupils and parents in schools all over the country adopting relevant processes and principles from it. The book is thus offered first of all to those actually engaged in the educational enterprise, in the hope that they will find that it reinforces the ethical and scholastic anchors of a common core curriculum for all Israeli children.

The book was written with a sense of the urgency of bringing up for renewed discussion the issue of nationality—its nature, its problematics, and its status today. Israel is still very far from realizing its national goals and from crystallizing its identity as a Jewish-democratic state. A retreat from nationhood as an ideology that shapes both interior and foreign policy and the decline of national feeling as a uniting factor of the nation for which the state came into being—both of these still threaten the continued development and even the very existence of the state of Israel. Several of the papers in the book confront directly the anti-national ideology that has become routine in historiography and in postmodernist social and political thought.
The book aims to put the subject of nationhood on the agenda of Israel’s political, social, and cultural elite. It attempts to present the background and to clarify the concepts, and most of all to raise the questions—which have controversial solutions—for renewed discussion, and to highlight their importance from the perspective of a national worldview. The subject is presented from diverse perspectives to sustain the public discourse and to divert it from a tendency toward conflict and polarization to a tendency toward agreement.

This is a civics textbook that provides an infrastructure of knowledge and skills on which civics education can be built, including the mechanisms of the democratic system of government, the principles and values on which it is based, and the language of civics.
The textbook and the teachers’ guide will help teachers convey information and foster pupils’ understanding of concepts, principles, and ideas associated with civics and provide a basis for teaching the subject in senior high school.
The textbook helps students understand the meaning of a people, a state, a citizen, a democratic state and democratic values. It also helps them understand an individual’s rights and obligations, state institutions and the rules under which they operate, the uniqueness of Israel as the state of the Jewish nation, and the various groups within Israeli society and the relations between them.
Study using this book is based not only on written and processed information, but primarily on dozens of varied activities from which the students can learn and actually teach themselves. Values and Citizens: Civics Education through Active Learning is a means of drawing students closer, through their experience in the civics class, to events in their own social and civil lives.
Values and Citizens: Civics Education through Active Learning was written by a team at the Van leer Jerusalem Institute that spent some seven years writing and introducing a curriculum of active learning in civics in hundreds of schools, in all sectors, throughout the country.
The book is approved by the Ministry of Education.

"Love in Mysticism", as part of the project on Love in Religion, Oxford Center for Religion and Culture, Regent's Park College, Oxford, 30.5.2024
HARMONY OF MIND AND BODY: THEORIES OF LOVE IN RABBINIC AND MYSTICAL LITERATURE - DRAFT
By Naftali Rothenberg
This article looks into the appearance of the androgyne myth in the Jewish canon. The androgynous unity of male and female preceded the state of separation and is an expression of the harmonious whole. Epistemic awareness of the precedence of the androgynous whole is the source of the desire experienced by both male and female following their separation, which leads them to reunite. The main part of the article, in the next two paragraphs, will be devoted to the rabbinic and mystical interpretation of the story in Genesis of the creation of human.
THE STRUGGLE FOR LOVE:
HOW COMMENTARY SAVED THE SONG OF SONGS FROM OBLIVION?
DRAFT by Naftali Rothenberg
The uniqueness of the Song of Songs reflects in the difference between the expressions of love in its content versus the manifestation of love in the prophetic literature. For generations, there was a debate among the sages about the acceptance and holiness of this book. In this article I will present the expressions of contention among the sages about the question of the sacredness of the book and the interpretation that determined its status for generations. Interpretation, which is expressed less in textual explanations and more in changing the reference to the place and meaning of love between man and woman and hence - love in all its other manifestations.
Draft paper (a lecture) for the Summer academy on Law and Religion, Oxford University, June 2014
The questions of the implementation of freedom of religion and freedom of worship by Moslem, Christians and Jews are sensitive and complex. In this paper I'll try to describe only one piece of the Jewish puzzle and to raise a few questions to be dealt with in future opportunities. These are the main points:
• Traditional Halakha: The rabbis in the middle Ages differed regarding the question of whether the destruction of the Temple canceled the holiness of the Temple Mount. In 1853, the Ottoman Empire allowed the entrance of non-Muslims. In response, most rabbis adopted the position forbidding Jews to ascend the mountain. The rabbis’ prohibition did not change even under the influence of the enthusiasm following the unification of Jerusalem in the 1967 war.
• High Court of Justice: The Court recognized in its repetitive rulings the right of every Jew to go up on the Mountain and to pray there. The way was open to implementation of the principal of freedom of worship for groups and public events.
• City Police: brought to the attention of the court that implementation of the principal of religious worship is a potential for violation and danger to human life.
• Religious Nationalism: a significant number of rabbis and religious nationalist communities removed the prohibition on ascending the mountain and A growing number of Jews are going up to the Temple Mount. Did the High Court of Justice, a distinctly secular institution, have an influence on the halakhic change?
As I write the full article on the basis of this lecture, I would love to receive your help. Please send me comments, suggestions and sources. Thanks!

Book review by Naftali Rothenberg
Israel Studies Forum 21, no. 2, Winter 2006, 131–134
The Book of Esther (the Megillah) is a court-story. There is not a single spiritual expression let alone a religious expression from the beginning to its end. Do not look in the Megillah for the name of God because you will not find it. Having said that, a question naturally arises: The Book of Esther, is it from the Holy Scriptures?
