Abstract:
In the 1970's Variscite veins and evidence of ancient mining were recorded for the Aliste area (Zamora, Spain). Variscite is a green mineral largely employed for bead-making in Late Prehistory and Roman Times. In this work we presente a synthesis of the surveys made by geologist and archaeologist in the last 40 years together with the results of the most recent archaeological fieldwalking surveys and excavations performed by our team. Along the latest discoveries that stem from our work it can be said now that most of the variscite ancient mines in the Aliste area are located in Las Cercas (Palazuelo de las Cuevas) and La Cogolla (Palazuelo de las Cuevas/San Vicente de la Cabeza). Together with the physical evidence of mining and in clear association to them we have recorded knapped stone tools that points to a likely prehistoric exploitation of this mineral during Late Prehistory.

During Late Prehistory adornments worked out of variscite are widely used as prestige items all over Europe. The archaeological record of centre-south-west Northern Spanish Meseta is an ideal case study to fully reconstruct the chaîné opératoire from 1. Mining at Aliste area (Palazuelo de las Cuevas and other nearby mines), 2. adornment manufacturing at the production locii of Quiruelas de Vidriales sites, 3. Adornment consumption in about 30 tombs and settlements from Late Neolithic to Copper Age in the nearby areas to the mining and manufacturing places. This paper analyses the technotypological features, scale and organisation of variscite adornment production patterns along time. Results allows to argue about a craft tradition born during the Late Neolithic that keep up its techno-tyopological features as grew up on intensity, concentration and most likely specialisation of the production during the Copper Age

ABSTRACT We here present a tried to deeper understand the meaning and cultural circumstances in which megalithic tombs with corridor where built in the northeast of the northen sub-plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, combining astronomical, topographical and orographic characteristics of the surroundings. We also describe the fieldwork performed to observe on the ground the effects of the dawn sunlight in several of these dolmens, demonstrating that the orientations where carefully calculated to cause, during the days around the beginning of the Winter, the sunlight to ilumminate the inner parts of the tombs and the art manifestations within that we describe. From here we deduce the possible existence of a sociocultural structure with rituals, ceremonies and funerary activities bound to a sound knowledge of the calendar and a specialiazed workforce dedicated to the design and construction of these dolmens and light effects associated to them.

The focus of this paper is to update the Iberian jade axe database with new unpublished data and the archaeometric characte-risation (Raman and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy) of five jade axes of the Spanish Northern Meseta. This data will be used to test the hypothesis published by other authors which suggests that during the 5th and 4th millennia BCE there was a directional exchange of sociotechnic artefacts between Brittany, France (repolished alpine jade axes), and the Western Iberian Peninsula (ornaments of variscite mined in Zamora and Huelva). Archaeometric data shows a supra-peninsular exchange for axes based on the alpine origin of the jade. Besides this, previously untangled archaeological questions such as 1) Breton and Western Iberian jade axes and variscite ornaments typologies 2) exchange dynamics of other sociotechnic artefacts in Central Iberia and 3) the correlation of the distribution of jade axes, variscite sources and variscite beads, are analysed together. In our opinion, the data available suggest that, instead of a " directional trade " exchange, green sociotechnic objects –jade and variscite-reflect a decentralised " down-the-line/prestige chain " model.
ABSTRACT: The archaeological record of the Spanish Northern Meseta Late Prehistory has offered a wide variety of sociotechnic artefacts such as different types of ornaments, spatula-idols, or copper objects. From the beginning of the Early Neolithic and through the Late Neolithic and the Copper Age this sets of goods were severely transformed. This paper focuses on an analysis proposal based on quantifying variables such as 1) the amount of energy or work wasted on their production, 2) the number of colours employed, and 3) the proportion of population who used them. It also focuseson identifying the dynamics of these variables along the time. After the analysis it can be said that between the Early Neolithic and the Copper Age the energy wasted on production and the number of colours employed grown while the proportion of people who used them decreased. At the same time, the size and density of the networks along which these artefacts were exchanged also grown. These dynamics could be interpreted as a process in which sociotechnic artefacts changed from being used for showing different aspects of the social person –sex, age, associations, etc.– to being used for showing, in the most cases, rank inequalities.

Pico Centeno Mine 2. These results were integrated with analysis of other well-dated periods of variscite production to establish an Iberian-wide chronological framework. Variscite production at Pico Centeno Mine 2 began
at ~5200 BC, coincident with alpine jade production or Casa Montero Iberian flint production. Variscite
was only used occasionally, together with other greenstones, during the 5th and 6th millennia BC. During the
4th millennium BC, variscite use began to increase to its apogee in the first half of 3rd millennium BC when it appeared in nearly every Iberian burial site. This increase in variscite production and use coincided with decline in
the popularity of alpine jade. By the end of the 3rd millennium BC, new resources began to be valued such as
Asian and African Ivory, Baltic and Sicilian amber, and copper-based metal products. The variscite cycle thus
started with the decline of jade in the 5th–4th millennium BC, and ended with the appearance of copper, ivory
and extra-peninsular amber by the end of the 3rd millennium BC.
ABSTRACT: Here it is presented the summary of a brief archaeological campaign conducted on Quiruelas de Vidriales (Zamora). Some previously known sites, such as Las Peñas and Los Arenales, have been re-studied, and some others, such as Los Arenales II, Valdefrades and Terraza +10 m, have been discovered. Terraza +10 m is a Lower Paleolithic site, Las Peñas and Los Arenales are Copper Age sites and Los Arenales II and Valdefrades are Later Prehistoric sites of undetermined chronology. The quantitative analysis of the archaeological materials of Las Peñas and Los Arenales have served to propose some inferences concerning the ways of life of the prehistoric groups that lived there.

In the northeast area of the Spanish Northern Meseta there are known 15 standing stones disposed as a 50 km alignment. The archaeological excavations developed in 5 of them have confirmed its prehistoric chronology. Here we intend to test the hypothesis that argues there was a planned distribution of standing stones from the point of view of the spatial analysis. Our approach is focused on inquiring about the locational strategies of the standing stones and the inner organisation of the alignment in aspects such as its relation with water resources, the least-cost pathways or the viewshed. The results show that the standing stones are located in visible places and at regular intervals of a good route which links the plains with the high valleys of the mountains.
center of Iberia used for the disposition of secondary
burials during the mid third millennium BC. We present
bioanthropological, isotopic (87Sr/86Sr, δ 13C y δ 18O)
analyses and 16 radiocarbon dates on human remains,
as well as mineralogical characterization of 6 beads (4 of
them variscite from Palazuelo de las Cuevas, Zamora), and
a quantitative analysis of 43 pottery fragments recovered
during the 1989 excavations. A minimum of 21 individu-als
have been identified, covering all age ranges and sex. Low
percentages of pathologies have been detected, mainly
dental calculus and caries, with specific cases of cribra
orbitalia, periostosis and arthritis. Only adults received
a clearly individualized treatment, suggestive of achieved
status. We interpret the evidence as a multi-staged mortuary
program, the last phase of which is documented at the site,
with previous stages perhaps carried out elsewhere, and
we evaluate these results in the context of the regional
funerary record.
