ABSTRACT The Albufera is a hypertrophic oligohaline lagoon, with a mean chlorophyll a concentration of about 322 mg m–3, and a conductivity of 1949 μS cm–1 (SORIA 1997). Until now, we thought that the most important factor explaining the variation in the limnology of the Albufera was the disposal of drainage and surplus irrigation waters in the rice fields (MIRACLE et al. 1987, VICENTE & MIRACLE 1992). However, the results obtained in this 4-year survey indicate that the main reason for variation is the inflows after heavy showers. The thermal inertia that keeps the Mediterranean Sea warm in autumn, and the input of cold air in the upper layers of the atmosphere cause heavy showers (>100 mm day–1) and floods. Sometimes, a single storm could double the annual mean rainfall. Furthermore, the storm may last only a few hours and the infiltration potential of soil is low whereas runoff increases (CAMARASA 1995). Only 2 h after the initial rain, the so-called flash flood begins.

Un total de 126 especies de fitoplancton y 53 de zooplancton y 11 variables ambientales se incluyeron en el análisis. TEMPORAL VARIATION OF THE ZOOPLANKTONIC POPULATIONS IN CISO (GERONA, SPAIN) A ANOXIC POND Cisó, is a small karstic sulfurous pond in the area of Banyoles (Gerona, Spain). Singular features of this pond are its anoxia and high sulfide concentration throughout the whole water column, most ofthe year, the only exception being a shallow aerobic epilim-nion in summer. Quantitative zooplankton samples, taken in the vertical profile, during the years 1977 and 1978 have been studied. The oxygena-tion period was much more important in 1977 than 1978 and the months the maximum depth of the aerobic layer were may and august respectively. The results show that zooplankton of rotifers and crustaceas is composed by: 1) A group of species, namely Mytilina bisulcata, Mytilina crassipes, Mytilina compressa and Bdelloidea of a benthonic charac-ter; which are more or less permanent and have a tendency to inhabit the deepest half of the water column (5 to 10 m). 2) A group of species of a more plankton...

Albufera of Valencia, a shallow lagoon originally covered by submerged vegetation, shifted from a clear to a turbid state loosing its macrophyte cover, as a result of an intense eutrophication process that started in the 60's. However, clear‐water phases take place in winter and are the result of the " flushing " during the emptying of the surrounding flooded rice fields. Sluice gates are opened and rice fields drain through the lake to the sea. Rice field water is of relatively good quality because in winter paddies are flooded without cultivation. However, the intensity of the event varies year to year depending on the hydrological regime. The aim of this work is to look at the different influence of flushing on phytoplankton, depending on its intensity and timing. Consequently phytoplankton biovolume drastically diminished in late winter 2010. However, in the year 2011, when flushing was less intense and not repeated, phytoplankton biovolume showed only a small decr...
