In the study of interpersonal relationships, within and between species, the scientist is an active and engaged participant in those relationships. Separation between self and other, scientist and subject, runs counter to systems thinking and creates an unnecessary divide between humans and animals.

Dialogues form into regularly recurring routines, called frames, that are either creative (changing, developing) or rigid (unchanging). Second, we argue that there is a non-verbal form of the dialogical self that first appears in early infancy. Finally, we show how the dialogical self develops systematically over the first 18 months of life by presenting a case study of some creative and rigid frames of one infant girl and her mother.

In this perspective, information (meaning) is viewed as emerging spontaneously between continuously active communication partners. Communication that is both continuously coordinated and creative is coregulated ("a continuous unfolding of individual action that is susceptible to being continuously modified by the continuously changing actions of the partner" ). Creativity is a fundamental aspect of interpersonal communication, occurring when an innovation enters into communication. The Relational Coding system aims at assessing patterns of communication and focuses on the communication system as a whole. It is applicable to any type of dyadic communication (e.g., parent-child, therapist-client, husband-wife). In addition, it can be adapted for use with triads or larger groups (e.g., teacher-classroom, performer-audience).
