The sample was 160 brazilian adults skulls (50% male and 50% female). Using the Pearson's correlation they found the following results: 1) The positive correlation was reasonably strong in male at the right side between the maximal width of the face and the ideal depth, to reach with an injection needle, the maxillary nerve in the pterigopalatine fossa. 2) The correlation was moderately positive in male sex at the left side and in female at both sides. The formula of the line of regression found was: [table: see text]

It is the most accessible mucous membrane and one of the tissues with the highest cellular turnover in the human body. The identification and isolation of epidermal stem cells has been seen as one of the main goals in regenerative medicine. Although epithelial stem cells can be identified either in vivo by label retention or in vitro by clonogenicity, neither method of identification allows their easy isolation for analysis. In an effort to identify and isolate these stem cells, a large number of studies have identified epithelial stem/progenitor cells markers, such as p75NTR, CK14, integrins and CD71. Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish epithelial stem cell lineages from different P75NTR positive clones, Methods: Different positive clones were analyzed and characterized by proliferation assays as colony-forming efficiency and long-term growth survivor, potential for epithelial reconstitution...

The objective of this study was to evaluate possible changes on blood coagulation tests by using ketoprofen and diclofenac potassium after removal of mandibular third molars. Fifty-one subjects between 16 and 30 years old, with no history of gastrointestinal disorders or allergy to anti-inflammatory components, were randomly assigned to 2 groups: 27 patients received 50 mg of ketoprofen, and 24 patients received 25 mg of diclofenac potassium. Subjects started the oral medication 2 hours before surgery and continued taking it every 8 hours for 5 days. Blood samples were collected preoperatively and on the final day of the drug regime to evaluate prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, clot retraction, and platelet count. Student t test for matched pairs did not show a significant difference between pre- and posttreatment variables for both anti-inflammatory drugs. These results suggest that the safety of ketoprofen and diclofenac potassium is comparable to their anticoagulation effect.

However, the diffusion of antibiotics is a matter of controversy because of the low vascularization of the cystic epithelium. The aim of the present study was to determine the antimicrobial action of amoxicillin and metronidazole on infected odontogenic cysts. Ten odontogenic root cysts were punctured before and after antibiotic treatment in 2 patient groups. Group 1 consisted of 5 patients treated with 500 mg amoxicillin at 6-hour intervals, and group 2 consisted of 5 patients treated with 400 mg metronidazole at 8-hour intervals, for 7 days. After this period, the patients were submitted to surgery for enucleation. The fluid collected was seeded onto culture media for counts of total bacteria and facultative anaerobic bacteria. The results showed that the amount of bacteria present in the fluid was significantly higher than the amount isolated after antibiotic treatment. Also, most of the microorganisms present in the fluid collected before antibiotic administration were strict anaerobes. Both antibiotics reduced the number of bacteria in the cystic fluid, showing that they did diffuse into the lesions at sufficient concentrations to exert their antimicrobial action.

Methods: Subjects were selected from 3000 patients that come to treatment at Oral Minor Surgery Service of the University between 2008 and 2009. Twenty-five subjects fulfilled inclusion criteria, were asked to sign the informed consent form and underwent oral clinical and dental radiographic examination. Infection foci were diagnosed when it was present: chronic periodontitis and periodontal pocket above 5mm with severe bone resorption and tooth mobility index in grade 2 or 3; large and deep carious lesion with associate periapical radioluscence suggesting periapical lesion without the possibility of conservative treatment; or presence of impacted tooth with or without associate osteolitic lesion. Capillary ...

Method: : Four titanium cylinders were fixed to the calvarium of 22 New Zealand white rabbits. In Group 1 (n = 10), 3 cylinders were randomly filled with one of the test materials and 1 cylinder was filled with a blood clot (CL). In Group 2 (n = 12), the cylinders were randomly assigned to the same materials and blood clot, with the addition of rhBMP-2. The euthanasia was performed after 14 weeks in both groups.
