Various simple unsteady saturated flow configurations related to drawdown and recharge in a block of soil are employed to test the accuracy of the numerical solution of these transient flow problems against experimental observations made on the corresponding Hele-Shaw model constructed for the purpose. Relative importance of procedural approximations involved in the application of boundary element method like time and boundary discretization, weighting factor for derivative approximation, coefficient matrix evaluation etc., is pointed out by comparing numerical and experimental results.

Optimal operation for Tiete River (Brazil) hydroelectric system composed of six hydroelectric plants is studied to characterize its stochastic aspects via dynamic programming. The optimization problem is expressed as the minimization of expected value of energy required to meet local demand for different periods of operation discretized in trimesters. The stochastic process of occurence of natural river discharge is represented by 4th order multivariate autoregressive model. Problem solution is obtained by Stochastic Dual Dynamic Programming (SSDP) via Benders1 decomposition as proposed by Pereira and Pinto (1985, 1988) which incorporates hydrologic variability admitting multiple equally likely future flow scenarios at each stage. Repeated optimizations are made with independent flow sequences to evaluate the importance of the number of flow scenarios in a tree-like structure of synthetic hydrologic inputs and the period of operation as regards the variability of the expected value of the energy import costs for optimal operation.

Universal relationships between application efficiency, statistical properties of water distribution pattern, and the application ratio are developed assuming that the application depths observe gamma distribution when asymmetrically distributed and normal in the symmetric case. Results for the positively skewed gamma distribution and the normal distribution are extrapolated to treat the negatively skewed applications. These relationships agree with those obtained numerically by other authors from observed distribution patterns. Application efficiency is shown to increase with positive asymmetry for minimum application depths equal to or less than the average depth. Negative asymmetry and larger applications have the oppositive effect on application efficiency. The results are presented in standard units that permit ready evaluation of application efficiency and other parameters for various irrigation systems having different uniformity characteristics.
