In the Hispania citerior province, the provincial assembly (concilium provinciae Hispania citerioris) meeting each year in Tarraco was the place to look for this support, the place to know and be known. It will be raised through three significant cases.

The city of Tarragona, together with some of the nearby towns such as Altafulla, Constantí and Ro... more The city of Tarragona, together with some of the nearby towns such as Altafulla, Constantí and Roda de Bará, preserve important vestiges from the Roman period. This concentration of monuments makes Tarragona’s heritage so exceptional that it was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2000. The buildings of ancient Tarraco represent the universal value of all that a Roman provincial capital signified in antiquity: a symbol of the civic and ideologic values of the community of peoples and cultures that came to be the Roman Empire.
The paper presents the different functions of the colonia Tarraco as the capital of the provincia Hispania citerior and head of the conventus tarraconensis. The colony undertook extensive programmes of public monumental architecture –the forum, temples, a judicial basilica, a theatre, an altar and a large provincial temple dedicated to Augustus, the provincial forum, amphitheatre, thermae...– designed to draw the whole population together around the dynastic image of the domus Augusta. It was a town prepared to accommodate the fiscal apparatus of the province and the judicial activities that were the responsibility of the legate governor. From the Flavian period on, once a year the concilium pHc gathered the representatives of towns from the whole province in Tarraco and the imperial cult became the essence of Roman influence.

Between 1981 and 1984, on behalf of the new Servei d'Arqueologia de la Generalitat de Catalunya, ... more Between 1981 and 1984, on behalf of the new Servei d'Arqueologia de la Generalitat de Catalunya, a team led by M. Roca, R. Mar and J. Ruiz de Arbulo made the planimetry of the remains of the Roman theater of Tarragona and an stratigraphical investigation in the annexed monumental sector. This investigation allowed to document a wide stratigraphic sequence of a sector near the port of the old Tarraco.
It is a large warehouse with parallel ships separated by pillars of masonry and work walls. The structure of the building seems to correspond to the end of a porticus, a port warehouse. This warehouse was built on a powerful building level containing a great ceramic set that we now present. The interest of this deposit lies in the richness and variety of the materials present and especially in its precise chronology to study the commercial movements of ceramic handicrafts and amphorae containers during the first years of Augustus's mandate, at the end of the 1st century BC.

This article provides the census of Pompeian hospitality business houses, while examining their d... more This article provides the census of Pompeian hospitality business houses, while examining their diverse architectural versions: wine shops, meal houses, small inns, restaurants and hotels. Distinguishing popinae, cauponae and hospitia appears as a major archaeological issue. We therefore propound an analysis that takes into account the number of rooms, the presence of triclinia and, if the case, the adaptation into domus and gardened vineyards. The existence of large gates, annexed courtyards and stables allows us to clearly identify the stabula aligned to the main gates entering the city. We stress that the epigraphic evidence bear good witness to the fact that nobody in 1st-century AD Pompei already used the term thermopolium which, in spite of its popularity in the guides, we only know from Plautus’ theatre.

The paper presents the different functions of the colonia Tarraco as the capital of the provincia Hispania citerior and head of the conventus tarraconensis. The colony undertook extensive programmes of public monumental architecture –the forum, temples, a judicial basilica, a theatre, an altar and a large provincial temple dedicated to Augustus, the provincial forum, amphitheatre, thermae...– designed to draw the whole population together around the dynastic image of the domus Augusta. It was a town prepared to accommodate the fiscal apparatus of the province and the judicial activities that were the responsibility of the legate governor. From the Flavian period on, once a year the concilium pHc gathered the representatives of towns from the whole province in Tarraco and the imperial cult became the essence of Roman influence.
