We propose PNEP, a simple extension to NEP, and a procedure to translate a grammar into a PNEP that recognizes the same language. These parsers based on NEPs do not impose any additional constrain to the structure of the grammar, which can contain all kinds of recursive, lambda or ambiguous rules. This flexibility makes this procedure specially suited for Natural Languge Processing (NLP).

This approach has been implemented in a new version of Atenea, a system able to automatically assess students' short answers. The system has been improved so that it is now able to take into account the students' preferences and personal features to adapt not only the assessment process but also to personalize the appearance of the interface.

The combinational schema has been tested in the experimental framework provided by the free-text Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) system called Atenea (Alfonseca & Pérez, 2004).

Abstract We have applied BLEU (Papineni et al., 2001), a method originally designed to evaluate a... more Abstract We have applied BLEU (Papineni et al., 2001), a method originally designed to evaluate automatic Machine Translation systems, in assessing short essays written by students. We study how much BLEU scores correlate to human scorings and other keyword-based evaluation metrics. We conclude that, although it is only applicable to a restricted category of questions, BLEU attains better results than other keyword-based procedures.

The different configurations include closed-class word removal, stemming, two baseline word-sense disambiguation procedures, and translating the texts into a simple semantic representation. We also prove empirically that the accuracy is kept when the student answers are translated automatically.

We showed that it outperforms other keyword-based algorithms in assessing students' essays, and varied some of its internal parameters. In this study, we perform a global search on our sets of possible references, using genetic algorithms, in order to find out the highest accuracy that it can attain when assessing students' answers.
