A major work of political economy as well as a beautifully crafted philosophical history of Spain’s political development until the eighteenth century, "Informe Sobre la Ley Agraria" explores the lessons learned from the shortcomings of the Spanish Crown’s agrarian policies in the eighteenth century.

On the eve of Buenos Aires’ 1810 revolution, Montevideo received close to one million pesos in external fiscal subsidies; such supplements to its meager tax base help account for its loyalism. As Spain proved unable to directly assist loyal Montevideanos, regency appointees and local corporations turned to loyalist authorities and locals in Lima, Peru. Through original archival research in Peru, Spain, and Uruguay, this article gives the first detailed account of the multiple seaborne missions sent from Montevideo to Lima, which by 1814 secured more than a half-million pesos in monetary assistance. These funds not only sustained military and naval campaigns but also assured big and small imperial stakeholders that the system of fiscal transfers that benefited them had not been brought to a complete halt.

Abstract: Democracy and republic are historiographical keywords regarded as touchstones of political discourses during the age of Independence in Hispanic America. In spite of the fact that recent research has shown that their use was less frequent than historians used to believe, it is important to recall that, when put into use, these words revealed a complex network of meanings. Sometimes their semantic contents intersected and on other occasions they forked. These discursive interactions illustrate the kinds of conduct that political ideologist wanted to legitimize —or delegitimize— by using the terms democracy or republic. The aim of this article is to present some of the interactions between democracy and republic in the River Plate region between 1810 and 1815, and thus show the ways in which certain political actions were justified or condemned by the use of these terms to describe them.

This paper intends to focus on the discourses emerged around the term “regeneration” in its political applications during two constitutional moments: the Cortes Extraordinarias y Constituyentes de España e Indias (1810-1812) and the gathering of Asamblea Constituyente de las Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata (1813). Through the analysis of sources of political and intellectual value –particularly letters and periodical press-, it is possible to understand the different semantics of regeneration and the role of these in the articulation of political discourses that had to manage different chronological dimensions in their own legitimation.

This paper enquires, from the "conceptual history" viewpoint, on the diverse uses and meanings of the concept "political revolution" in the political language of the early 19th century Montevideo and Banda Oriental. Such diverse uses contrast with the definition-type of meanings that posterior historiography gave to the concept of "revolution". Moreover, those uses were connected with the ideologies emerged in the "age of revolution" and were strongly tied to the different political cultures and languages of Uruguayan politics during 19th and 20th centuries.
