Upper Cretaceous Kawagarh Formation is well exposed in the Attock Hazara Fold and Thrust Belt (AH... more Upper Cretaceous Kawagarh Formation is well exposed in the Attock Hazara Fold and Thrust Belt (AHFTB) and shows significant lateral and vertical variations in lithology. The present work deals with the sedimentological studies of marl and marly limestone sequence of Kawagarh Formation exposed at the Bagh Neelab, Ghariala north and Sojhanda villages in Northern Kalachitta Range. Detailed petrographic studies of marly limestone and hard marl substrate show that planktons and oysters are the main skeletal constituents of studied samples and clay and detrital quartz mainly composed the non skeletal fraction. X-Ray diffraction analyses of selected marl samples confirm the petrographic data. On the basis of skeletal and non skeletal content, two microfacies-marl microfacies and Planktonic microfacies are constructed. The faunal content, their paleoecology and detrital content of microfacies suggest that marl and marly limestone sequence of Kawagarh Formation was deposited over the mid and outer ramp settings.

An expected increase in demand of aggregates due to the upcoming and ongoing projects of western ... more An expected increase in demand of aggregates due to the upcoming and ongoing projects of western route of CPEC, there is a need of establishing new sources of aggregate in Trans Indus Ranges of Pakistan. In this context, limestone of Middle Jurassic Samana Suk Formation exposed at Sheikh Budin Hill, Marwat Range was investigated and sampled to depict its suitability as aggregate for the construction of roads with help of geological and engineering testing. The studied samples exhibit the tolerable values of all standard engineering parameters including Loss Angeles Abrasion (21.8%), Aggregate Impact (15.68%), Soundness (2.35%), Specific Gravity (2.57), water absorption (0.67%), Aggregate Crushing Value (12.99%), stripping of bitumen (<5%), coating of bitumen (>95%), Flakiness index (9.36%) and Elongation index (10.77%) proposed by the different national and international agencies like AASHTO, ASTM, BS and NHA. Petrographic analysis revealed that there is trivial possibility of Alkali Aggregate Reaction like ASR and ACR. The results of geological and engineering parameters recommend limestone of Samana Suk Formation as suitable aggregate for the base course, sub base coarse, asphalt and cement concrete.

Middle Eocene Pir Koh Formation is well exposed throughout the Sulaiman Range and acts as good hy... more Middle Eocene Pir Koh Formation is well exposed throughout the Sulaiman Range and acts as good hydrocarbon reservoir. In present research, two sections of Pir Koh Formation exposed at Dholi and Rakhi Gaj have been investigated for detailed sedimentological studies to depict the depositional environments and modeling. The formation is mainly composed of off-white to creamy white limestone and marl with black chert at places. Petrographic analyses show that Pir Koh Formation is composed of a rich assemblage of benthic and planktonic foraminifera with minor bioclasts. Four microfacies including Planktonic Wacke-Packstone microfacies, Marl microfacies, Discocyclina-Nummulities Wacke-Packstone Microfacies and Chert microfacies were framed with help of petrographic data. The microfacies analyses and paleoecology of fauna suggest a ramp model for the deposition of Pir Koh Formation and it was deposited over mid ramp to upper slope settings.
