The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International conducts an annual survey of business school faculty and administrative salaries. However, the standard reporting does not specify salary figures for logistics (and related areas such as supply chain management) faculty. Since the growth in the number of logistics faculty positions has continued to exceed the output of doctoral programs in the field for more than a decade, it is logical to assume that logistics faculty salaries, at all levels, are increasing. Without factual data, questions such as what salary a new logistics PhD should expect, and what an administrator should budget for a logistics faculty position, cannot be answered satisfactorily. Moreover, everyone expects and wants to be adequately compensated. For the specific discipline of logistics and supply chain management, the data on average compensation across different ranks, institutions, and other such factors is available only upon request. In order to provide such factual data, the authors have developed a survey to collect data on logistics and supply chain faculty salaries.

The premise of the case is how to make best use of customer shopping time while staying competitive and profitable: The increase in the number of ecommerce-based channels and the growth of Amazon and Wal*Mart have forced brick-and-mortar retailers to seek alternative ways to reach potential customers in a cost- and time-efficient manner. In the U.S., an average of 0.74 hours per day is spent purchasing goods and services, while an average of 1.77 hours per day is spent doing household activities. Regardless of location, customers all have the same 24 hours in a day and only so much of it can be spent shopping. One of the benefits of ecommerce has been an increase in product variety offered to customers. The online marketplace has enabled consumers in many industries to locate, evaluate and purchase a far wider variety of products than they can with traditional brick-and mortar channels. 30% to 40% of Amazon book sales are titles that wouldn't normally be found in brick-and-mortar stores.

While aerial delivery drones capture headlines, the pace of adoption of drones in warehouses has shown the greatest acceleration. Warehousing constitutes 30% of the cost of logistics in the US. The rise of ecommerce, greater customer service demands of retail stores, and a shortage of skilled labor have intensified competition for efficient warehouse operations. This takes place during an era of shortening technology life cycles. This paper integrates several theoretical perspectives on technology diffusion and adoption to propose a framework to inform supply chain decision-makers on when to invest in new robotics technology.

To date, no published study has measured the evolution of supply chain structure and relationships in response to changing product-market development requirements. This research draws upon production literature and exchange governance theory to simulate the interaction of supply and demand environment factors on the growth and development of supply chain relationships. Experiments were conducted to study the effects of different rates of product change, different demand environments, and different economies of scale on the level of integration between firms at different levels in the supply chain. It synthesizes the interrelationships of the simulation variables in order to extend TCA theory into a dynamic network environment by using the CAS paradigm. The study reveals definite patterns of evolution under conditions of differing product-market conditions, it confirms the importance of the balancing transaction and production costs, and it highlights the asymmetries of transactional...

Increasingly, research across many disciplines has recognized the shortcomings of the traditional “integration prescription” for inter-organizational knowledge management. This research conducts several simulation experiments to study the effects of different rates of product change, different demand environments, and different economies of scale on the level of integration between firms at different levels in the supply chain. The underlying paradigm shifts from a static, steady state view to a dynamic, complex adaptive systems and knowledge-based view of supply chain networks. Several research propositions are presented that use the role of knowledge in the supply chain to provide predictive power for how supply chain collaborations or integration should evolve. Suggestions and implications are suggested for managerial and research purposes.

PurposeThere presently is no comprehensive review which systematizes and summarizes the burgeoning body of logistics educational literature. The purpose of this paper is to provide a guide for both educators and practitioners to assess the history, current status, and future trends in logistics education in order to nurture advancement in logistics education.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws its conclusions based upon a literature review and categorizes the evolution of logistics education into three areas: defining curriculum, developing content and skills taught, and refining teaching methods.FindingsLogistics education continues to benefit from strong ties to industry. Additionally, four principle macro‐environmental factors were discovered that impact the current status of logistics education: an increase in the number of logistics educational programs, limited supply of logistics‐trained faculty, changes to content requirements, and a changing teaching environment. Supply chain management has traditionally emphasized managing the physical flow of parts and finished goods. The next natural evolutionary step is developing the management of supply chain finance across multiple trading partners. One of these opportunities requires investigation of managing payment discounts. Traditionally, suppliers offer a discount to buyers to encourage earlier payment. Terms such as 2/10 n/30 allow for a 2% discount if the entire purchase is paid in full within the 10-day discount period instead of the customary 30 days. This 2% payment reduction translates into the equivalent of an annual return of 36%, resulting in the traditional rule of thumb to take the discount whenever possible. For a variety of reasons, only a small percentage of buyers actually are capturing these high returns. There is a disconnect between trading partners for using discounts for managing working capital across the supply. This paper explores the beneficial impact of participating in ...

This commentary addresses the issues of airline and airport deregulation through the Wright Amendment and the case of increased regulation at the Dallas/Ft. Worth and Love Field Airports in Texas. The restrictions limit the manner in which airline companies may operate in satellite airports within a close proximity to central metropolitan airports (in this case, Love Field and Dallas/Ft. Worth, respectively). Such restrictions were implemented in order to shield certain air carriers from cheaper and more competitive flights from the satellite airport. While many critics of the measure describe it as anti-competitive and non-beneficial, supporters point to an attempt to increase business at a more central location. Although the legislation has only an eight year term, the authors here polemically assert that deferment is an unsound policy.

There are many metrics available within a firm which may be used to help manage the firm toward achieving its objectives. Firms seeking supply chain improvements must develop metrics between firms. This paper provides an overview of the cash-to-cash concept. It begins by explaining how to calculate cash-to-cash. It then addresses the research question “How can the cash-to-cash metric be used to help improve the profitability of the supply chain?” First, it discusses how to leverage the three key variables to improve cash-to-cash performance. It considers the link between cash-to-cash performance and firm profitability as well as how to benchmark using the metric. Finally it identifies the premise behind WACC or inventory arbitrage and offers managerial considerations.

ABSTRACT This article provides assessment and benchmarks of cash-to-cash (C2C) in the oil and gas industry. C2C is being hailed as an early supply chain metric which integrates both accounting and logistics. From an accounting perspective, cash is the lifeblood of any business and contributes to a firm’s liquidity, profitability, and solvency, while from a marketing logistics perspective, understanding the supply chain can also contribute to firm profitability. Data presented allows firms within the oil and gas industry to compare their C2C performance to industry norms over time and with other industries. Ultimately, firms that have a full understanding of C2C will be in a better position to leverage cash to achieve higher returns and enhance their likelihood of survival.

This case illustrates the concept of consolidation and how freight forwarders use it to reduce transportation costs. The student must compare a ship-direct model against vehicular consolidation, then consider temporal consolidation, investigate the differences between a freight broker and a freight forwarder, and develop a rate analysis for use in negotiation.
