The extremely low longitudinal relaxivity (r1) of manganese oxide has severely impeded their substitution for cytotoxic gadolinium-based contrast agents for safe clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Here, we report on a synthetic strategy of chemical oxidation/reduction reaction in-situ in mesopores, followed by hydrogen reduction, for the fabrication of non-toxic manganese oxide/MSNs-based MRI-T1 contrast agents with highly comparable imaging performance to commercial Gd-based agents.

We studied a panel of mutant viruses containing wild-type and chimeric capsid HPV16 and HPV18 proteins. The mutant capsid protein expression, genome amplification, and episomal maintenance were comparable with the wild-type virus. However, the chimeric viruses varied in their titers from wild-type. We show that the intertypical mutant chimeric capsid viruses, that L2 affects the structure of L1 and that L1 affects the structure of L2 in the virion.

Abstract This paper presents a novel approach to predict the Internet end-to-end delay using multiple-model (MM) methods. The basic idea of the MM method is to assume the system dynamics can be described by a set of models rather than a single one; by running a bank of filters (each corresponds to a certain model in the set) in parallel at the same time, the MM output is given by a combination of the estimates from these filters.

Murine pluripotent stem cells can exist in two functionally distinct states, LIF-dependent embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and bFGF-dependent epiblast stem cells (EpiSCs). However, human pluripotent cells so far seemed to assume only an epiblast-like state. Here we demonstrate that human iPSC reprogramming in the presence of LIF yields human stem cells that display morphological, molecular, and functional properties of murine ESCs.

Abstract The evolution of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) clouds depends considerably on its composition. For example, cloud tracking usually relies on a diffusion model of the average atmospheric concentration of the CBRNE material; identification of its composition can benefit greatly from knowledge about the propagation of the compounds. As a result, substance classification and cloud tracking help each other significantly.

Abstract This paper gives a brief introduction to self-similar process and the estimation of Hurst parameter in the context of time series analysis. Different methods of self-similar traffic generation are compared based on a simulation study. We find that aggregating the streams of ON/OFF sources of Pareto distribution leads to self-similarity quickly as the sources become large.

Abstract In this paper we consider model selection problem using samples of small or moderate size where each model can have unknown parameter without a fully specified likelihood function. A semiparametric model selection criterion is proposed where the penalty-based model complexity term is used for the parameter with fully specified model structure and the kernel density estimation is used for the unknown noise distribution.

BackgroundA major hurdle in the use of exogenous stems cells for therapeutic regeneration of injured myocardium remains the poor survival of implanted cells. To date, the delivery of stem cells into myocardium has largely focused on implantation of cell suspensions.Methodology and Principal FindingsWe hypothesize that delivering progenitor cells in an aggregate form would serve to mimic the endogenous state with proper cell-cell contact, and may aid the survival of implanted cells.

Abstract This paper presents a regularized least squares method to estimate the location and release rate of atmospheric pollution. We assume that measured pollution concentration at different ground locations and meteorological conditions such as wind speed are available so that one can solve the advection-diffusion equation for a non-steady point source.

Abstract In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design (CLD) scheme combining rate adaptation and four types of hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra wideband (UWB) systems following the ECMA-368 standard. The time varying property is incorporated into standard UWB channel models for the purpose of investigating rate adaptation.

Abstract By using cognitive radio technology, opportunistic spectrum access has the potential to solve the underused spectrum problem. In this paper, by first introducing a specific cognitive radio scheme, we analyze the secondary user's capacity and the collision probability. Employing this scheme, we build two call admission control models for three classes of service, namely, handoff voice calls, new voice calls and data calls.

Abstract This paper presents a game theoretic approach for the management of multiple mobile sensors. Our approach can maintain tracks of smart targets under possibly adversarial environments. To ensure computational tractability, sensor management is divided into sensor assignment and sensor scheduling. In sensor assignment, covariance control and information theoretic sensor assignment are combined logically.

L3mbtl2 has been implicated in transcriptional repression and chromatin compaction but its biological function has not been defined. Here we show that disruption of L3mbtl2 results in embryonic lethality with failure of gastrulation. This correlates with compromised proliferation and abnormal differentiation of L3mbtl2−/− embryonic stem (ES) cells. L3mbtl2 regulates genes by recruiting a Polycomb Repressive Complex1 (PRC1)-related complex, resembling the previously described E2F6-complex, and including G9A, Hdac1, and Ring1b.

ABSTRACT Borna disease virus (BDV) infection of Lewis rats is the most studied animal model of Borna disease, an often fatal encephalomyelitis. In this experimental model, BDV-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) play a prominent role in the immunopathogenesis of infection by the noncytolytic, persistent BDV. Of the six open reading frames of BDV, CTLs to BDV X (p10) and the l-polymerase have never been studied.

Biosynthesis of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) by Cacumen Platycladi extract was investigated. The AgNPs were characterized by ultraviolet–visible absorption spectroscopy (UV–vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that increasing the initial AgNO3 concentration at 30 or 60° C increased the mean size and widened the size distribution of the AgNPs leading to red shift and broadening of the Surface Plasmon Resonance absorption.

Voice over IP (VoIP) has been widely used these years for its simplified infrastructure and significant cost savings. Using VoIP on the network, there is no need to separate cabling for telephone system and the phone can be taken when offices move with the same telephone number. It is because a VoIP exchange is based on software rather than hardware. It is easier to alter as well as maintain with operating costs lowered by 20%− 30% VoIP (2007).

ABSTRACT We have identified nucleotide sequences that regulate transcription in both a cell-type-specific and general manner in the long terminal repeat of the MCF13 murine leukemia virus. Besides the enhancer element, we have observed that the region between the enhancer and promoter (DEN) has a profound effect on transcription in different cell types. This effect, however, was dependent on the copy number of enhancer repeats and was detectable in the presence of a single repeat.

A novel class of 4, 5-disubstituted-5, 7-dihydro-pyrrolo [2, 3-d] pyrimidin-6-ones has been discovered as potent and selective inhibitors of the EGF-R tyrosine kinase family. These compounds selectively inhibit EGF-R kinase activity at low nanomolar concentration and tyrosine autophosphorylation in cells expressing EGF-R or Her2 (p185erbB). Structure–activity relationships (SARs) for this class of compounds are presented.

The basic approach is described as follows.

ABSTRACT The 93-bp region downstream of the enhancer (DEN) in the long terminal repeat (LTR) of the mink cell focus-forming virus (MCF13) has been shown to be important for transcriptional activation and viral lymphomagenicity (JC Tupper, H. We observed that it has enhancer-like abilities as well as some unique LTR properties.

Abstract–To detect a near-harmonic signal with random phase changes, several detection algorithms are considered based on different assumptions on the prior knowledge of the signal and noise parameters. Particular attention is paid to the detection of single electron spin signal where the signal is weak, quasi-harmonic with phase shift due to the possible inversion of spin orientation during the observation period.

ABSTRACT “Fractal” analysis of computer network traffic has recently been the subject of various studies. Most of the effort has been conentrated on measuring and modeling a possible long range dependence (LRD) process of the trafiic trace. However, long range dependence is only one feature of the “fractal” behavior. In this paper, we study rather different properties which are conveniently described by using multifractal analysis. This paper is organized as follows.

Abstract: Based on the process of reinforcing soft soil using cement in laboratory, the porosity of test samples under different pressures conditions were determined through mercury intrusion porosimetry. The experiment was introduced and the law of porosity variation was summarized. The results show that when stress is between 0 and 0. 15--0. 2 qu, porosity decreases along with the pressure, then porosity has increased in the wake of the pressure until the sample damaged.
