In this world of rapid urbanization the demand for natural construction materials is increasing d... more In this world of rapid urbanization the demand for natural construction materials is increasing day by day which has created a necessity for alternative construction materials. Recycling of materials is a possible way of eradicating the acute shortage of materials. Considerable work has been done in the area of self-compacting concrete by partial replacement of coarse aggregates (CA) with recycled coarse aggregates (RCA) obtained from construction and demolition debris. The present study has been done by adding steel fibers to concrete in a view of improving the mechanical properties of SCC so that it can be applied in beam column joints. An ideal mix proportion was arrived at, as a result of repeated trials and specimens that were cast and cured. The compression, tensile, and flexural strength parameters were determined and the result has been presented. The results obtained reveal that brick bats in combination with steel fibres may be used extensively in SCC.

Palm kernel shell ash (PKSA) is a by-product in palm oil mills. Subgrade samples were collected at chainages 0+000, 1+000, 2+000, 3+000 and 4+000 respectively at depths ranging 0.5m to 1.0m, while the base sample was collected from one of the heaps of laterite brought from the borrowpit at Oluwo area along New Ife Express Road, Oyo State, Nigeria. The samples were subjected to the following laboratory tests; Particle (grain) size analysis, Atterberg limit test, Compaction test, California bearing ratio (CBR) test and Specific gravity test. The particle size analysis results showed that all samples, both subgrade and base were well graded since their Uniformity Coefficients were greater than 15. Water samples were collected from seven sites (including an Abattoir, a market, residential community and a brewery); analysis of the physico-chemical parameters using standard methods and their environmental effects on the river were investigated. Generally, the value/degree of dissolved oxygen, phosphate, BOD, COD, pH, temperature, hardness from the sites during the rainy and dry seasons were compared with the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for domestic and commercial water. The traces of some hazardous physical and chemical impurities in the river were above the acceptable limits; and thereby pose a health risk to several rural communities who rely heavily on the river primarily as their source of domestic water. This study investigated the flexural characteristics of slurry infiltrated fibrous concrete made ... more This study investigated the flexural characteristics of slurry infiltrated fibrous concrete made with miraculous berry fiber (thaumatococcus daniellii) thereby assessing its potentials as a replacement for steel reinforcing material for economical construction methods. The stems of the miraculous berry plant were collected, freed of their inner central pith with their hard bark remaining, which are the fibers. They were sun-dried, cut in sizes of 400 mm and 80 mm to fit into 100 x 100 x 500 mm beam molds. The fibers were infiltrated with cement slurry at the tension zone of the beams to 10 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm thicknesses and filled up with 90 mm, 80 mm and 70 mm thickness of concrete. Plain concrete beams without cement slurry and fiber were cast to act as control. The fiber was subjected to tensile test and the cast beams to flexural strength examinations. Physical and mechanical properties of varying percentage of CCA cement concrete and 100% cement concrete of mix 1:2:4 and 0.5 water-cement ratios were examined and compared. A total of 72 concrete cubes of size 150 A? 150 A? 150 mm3 and 12 concrete cylinders of size 100mm (diameter) x 200mm (height) with different percentages by volume of CCA to Portland cement in the order 0:100, 10:90 and 20:80 were cast, tested and their physical and mechanical properties determined. This paper examines the effects of replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with corncob ash (CCA... more This paper examines the effects of replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with corncob ash (CCA) on the rheology and strength properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC). The rheology and compressive strength properties of different mixes of CCA-blended self-compacting concrete (CCA-SCC) were compared with the conventional SCC with and without superplasticizer at varying water-binder ratios. These properties were determined on fresh and hardened concretes respectively. The CCA-SCC mixes with superplasticizer fulfilled European Federation of National Associations Representing for Concrete (EFNARC) requirements for SCC flow properties except those in excess of 15 % CCA and those with neither CCA-blended cement nor admixture. A higher dosage of superplasticizer or water-binder ratio was required to meet the standard flow requirements. The CCA-SCC mixes exhibited the tendency for more strength beyond 90-days due to pozzolanic reactions. The paper revealed that CCA enhanced the rheological properties of SCC, while the rate of strength development was enhanced after 28-days curing due to pozzolanic activities.

Tremendous achievements have been reported on nanotechnology adoption on sustainable construction, but there are so much more to explore than has been achieved. Some of the advancements on the adoption of nanotechnology on sustainable construction, includes the enhancement of the rheology, strength and durability properties of concrete; which has been proved to be hinged on the nanoscopic characteristics of its constituent. Any modification at the nanoscopic level of concrete and its constituent influences its behavior, including its strength and durability characteristics. Hence, it is projected that the performance of concrete and sustainable construction materials in the future would be greatly enhanced by the application of nanotechnology to manipulate the atoms and molecules of these materials and their constituents at the nanoscale.

Research findings have reported a behavioural relationship between the splitting tensile strength... more Research findings have reported a behavioural relationship between the splitting tensile strength and compressive strength of concretes. This work studied both the experimental and analytical relationships that exist between splitting tensile strength and compressive strength of both vibrated concrete (VC) and self compacting concrete (SCC) of similar grades. Both concrete types were designed to achieve target compressive strength of 20 N/mm 2 , 30 N/mm 2 and 40 N/mm 2 at 28 days. The compressive and splitting tensile properties were measured on cylindrical concrete specimens of 150 mm diameter  300 mm length at 28-days using a compression testing machine. The analytical work tested seven different reported models relating the two measured parameters for VC on SCC, while the Welch 2 sample t-test statistical technique was adopted to check the normality and equality of variance of the results. Experimental findings revealed that the ratio of the splitting tensile to compressive strengths for VC and SCC decreases with increasing compressive strength, and the analytical study revealed that similar analytical model could be adopted for both concrete types as there is no statistically detectable difference between their results.
